Vikings re-sign Aaron Jones to 2-year, $20M contract after solid debut with former rival

CBS News09-03-2025
The Minnesota Vikings agreed to terms on a two-year, $20 million contract with running back Aaron Jones on Sunday that prevents the popular veteran from reaching free agency after a solid debut with his former rival.
Jones will get $13 million guaranteed, his agent Drew Rosenhaus said. The 30-year-old, who played seven seasons with the Green Bay Packers after being drafted in the fifth round out of Texas-El Paso in 2017, set career highs with 255 rushing attempts and 1,138 rushing yards for the Vikings in 2024.
Jones was the third rusher in franchise history to hit the 1,000-yard mark in his first year with Minnesota, following Adrian Peterson in 2007 and Chester Taylor in 2006. Jones also played in every game for just the second time in his career. He was also the team's Art Rooney Sportsmanship Award nominee and the team's Salute to Service Award winner.

Astros manager keeps closer role a mystery after Hader's injury

Astros manager keeps closer role a mystery after Hader's injury originally appeared on The Sporting News After the Astros put Josh Hader on the 15-day injured list due to shoulder strain, the question is who will replace the former NL Reliever of the Year as the team's primary closer. Manager Joe Espada made his thoughts clear on that after Tuesday's terrible 14-1 loss against the Red Sox, where their relievers were busted. While naming set-up man Bryan Abreu as the team's closer would make sense, Espada is holding his cards close to the chest. "I'm not naming (anyone) for the ninth, naming (anyone) for the eighth," the manager said. The Astros will need a reliable arm to win close games as they are in a tight American League West division race. As of now, Espada will rotate his relievers based on game situations moving forward. Abreu, boasting a 1.67 ERA, seems to be the best option to go with. Lefties Bennett Sousa and Bryan King, newly recalled Colton Gordon, and veteran Steven Okert are also in the mix. Newcomer Enyel De Los Santos has also made an appearance in relief. Espada admitted the loss of Hader, who leads the team with 28 saves and carries a 2.05 ERA, was a "gut punch," but he has put his faith in the guys they have to make up for his absence. "I feel good about all those guys," Espada said. "I was talking to the relievers about this. Josh Hader, how successful he's been, he needs guys to give him the ball with the lead. So all these guys have set him up to be the closer that he is. Not taking anything away from Josh - Josh is probably the best. But you need guys to help him get to that point. And these guys are capable of doing that." The Astros and Mariners are tied for first place in the AL West with an identical 67-53 record. The Astros play the Red Sox in the series finale on Wednesday.

Rockets fan survey: Are the Rockets finally a title contender? Voice your opinion

It's hard to envision a better time than now to be a Houston Rockets fan. It would be one thing to be optimistic after two seasons of rapid improvement under head coach Ime Udoka, pushing Houston to 52 wins and the No. 2 seed in a tight Western Conference last season — despite losing in the first round to the Golden State Warriors. But the shocking arrival of Kevin Durant this summer has catapulted the team (and fan) expectations into title contention, a long way from the rebuilding days of old. Advertisement That Houston was able to acquire the 14-time NBA All-Star forward without sacrificing substantial depth should give the fan base even more anticipation about where the organization stacks up. The two-timeline approach, developing young players with an aim to win now, has generated mixed results in recent NBA history, but not many teams boast players 23 years or younger like Amen Thompson and Alperen Şengün or a future Hall of Famer like Durant. The Rockets are set up for success in the short and long term, right? That's where you, the fans, come in. Every year, we at The Athletic look forward to hearing from you on several team-related topics, from title expectations to players primed for breakout seasons and everything in between. It's been a long summer, but here's your chance to put your feelings to paper and see how the rest of your fellow fans feel about the Rockets organization. Over the next week, we'll collect results (make sure to share this with all of your loved and hated ones). Packers rookie Matthew Golden surprises grandma with brand new home: 'She's living good'

Matthew Golden got to live out the dream back in April when he heard his name called in the NFL Draft — but he had one more dream to accomplish. Godlen was the 23rd pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and landed with the Green Bay Packers, becoming the team's first wide receiver selected in the first round since 2002. As an added bonus, he got a rousing ovation upon taking the stage, since the draft was right outside Lambeau Field. "It was a crazy atmosphere. The fans in general — it's different in Green Bay. Packer fans, they're so genuine, and they really love Green Bay. I can tell by the energy at practice. It's a cool place to be and kind of makes me want to practice. They're out there at practice giving us juice and energy. It's really cool," Golden said in a recent interview with Fox News Digital. It's been a whirlwind of an offseason for Golden. Right after his final season at Texas ended in the College Football Playoff semifinals, he had to almost immediately grind for the draft. Then came rookie camp, OTAs, minicamp, and now training camp. Essentially, he has not been truly off in about a year. But Golden knew what he signed up for. "It's everything I dreamed of as a kid, was to be able to make it to the NFL, go to the draft… I felt like the whole process, I definitely took it in and enjoyed it. Now I'm at a great organization where I can just play football have fun." Getting drafted, however, wasn't even his "biggest achievement." That was a promise he made to himself years ago as a child, when he decided to give back to his family that had struggled throughout his upbringing. When Golden was 12 years old, he and his family lost the property of his grandmother's house. "It always stuck with me that I wanted to do something good for my family, which was get that property back." Shortly after getting drafted, Golden said the first thing he would do with his new money would be to buy his grandmother a house. He wasn't able to get the exact property due to its current condition, but with the help of RE/MAX, he got a nearby house in Houston. "It was great. Just seeing the look on my grandma's face when I told her the house was hers, she had a lot of emotions, man. It was a cool moment for me. "She's living good, man." Golden surprised his grandmother with the house on July 10. She celebrated her new yard and pulled out a "closet dance." It's been a top-notch 2025 for Golden, but there's still one more goal to accomplish. "As a team, we always talk about getting the Lombardi Trophy. That's the question mark we've got in a team room," he said. "And I feel like for us every day, that's what we're trying to achieve. We're getting better offensively and defensively. We're pushing each other. We all know what the end goal is, and that's the Super Bowl. That's what we're chasing."
