Reconstructed bus terminus likely to be inaugurated on April 30
The reconstructed Rajiv Gandhi bus terminus on Maraimalaiadigal Salai is likely to be inaugurated on April 30. Senior officials from the Local Administration department and Smart City project on Monday inspected the facilities at the bus terminus.
'We have put up the file for dedicating the reconstructed bus stand for public use from April 30. The issue of allotment of shops is still in court. The facility will be inaugurated with an outlet of Ponlait and PTDC,' said an official.
Work to reconstruct the bus stand was taken up after shifting operations of government and private buses to AFT Mills ground in 2023. Though the work was completed a few months ago, the municipal authorities were waiting for a formal inauguration of the facility to start bus services from Maraimalaiadigal Salai.
The new terminus has 42 bus bays, 31 shops, two restaurants, four transport offices, parking facilities for six omni buses, a cloak room, an ATM, three general waiting halls with a capacity of 30 each, an AC waiting hall, two dormitories, and a parking lot that can accommodate 450 two-wheelers and 25 cars. The facility also has an information centre, a CCTV room, ticket booking offices, administrative building and a sanitation complex, said an official.

Warehousing facility near Chala market to be ready by August
The work on a major warehousing facility to cater to the needs of the markets in the capital city is progressing at Erumakkuzhy, near Chala Market. According to Thiruvananthapuram Corporation officials, about 25% of work of the much-delayed project has been completed, with completion expected by August. The ₹10-crore project is being implemented under the Smart City project of the Corporation. Scientific storage The warehousing facility was conceived as a scientific storage mechanism for perishable goods without the use of harmful chemicals as well as for the storage of other commodities meant for the markets including Chala and Palayam. For this purpose, it will have cold storage facilities as well as normal containers. The facility is coming up on land owned by the Thiruvananthapuram Development Authority (TRIDA). Once completed, the warehouse will be spread over an area of 26,000 square feet, providing ample storage facilities. Perishable cargo destined for the markets in the city can be unloaded and stored at the facility. The lack of storage options within the city has been an issue raised by traders for a long time. The opening of the warehouse is expected to address this lacuna. The completed facility will be handed over to the State Warehousing Corporation. Multi-level parking The work which had begun four years ago was beset with delays. The original contractor was terminated and the work order awarded to another contractor recently. A multi-level vehicle parking facility with parking space for lorries and trucks coming to the markets in the city is also coming up at Vaniyamkulam. While the ground floor will be dedicated for the parking of trucks, the upper floors will be set aside for parking cars and motorcycles. The two projects were planned considering the needs of the traders in the city's markets.

Government Proposes Merging Tumakuru with Bengaluru
Tumakuru: The Karnataka state government has initiated plans to integrate Tumakuru district into Bengaluru, aiming to streamline urban growth and enhance regional connectivity, according to Home Minister G Parameshwara. Speaking to the media, Parameshwara revealed that a formal proposal has been submitted to merge Tumakuru with Bengaluru North district, signalling a move to accommodate Bengaluru's rapid expansion. Parameshwara highlighted that Bengaluru's urban sprawl is extending beyond its current boundaries, reaching areas like Nelamangala and approaching neighbouring districts such as Tumakuru, Ramanagara, Kolar, and Chikkaballapur. He emphasised that renaming Tumakuru as part of 'Bengaluru North' would make the region more recognisable globally, citing the example of New York, where such nomenclature simplifies identification. 'Tumakuru is just 30 km from Nelamangala, and integrating it will support the city's growth,' he noted. The proposal includes bringing 14 gram panchayats under the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), expanding Tumakuru's administrative reach. Parameshwara also praised Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar for his successful initiative to reclassify Ramanagara as Bengaluru South district, a plan already approved by the government. 'This rebranding changes the region's identity and aligns it with Bengaluru's growth trajectory. A similar approach is being considered for Tumakuru,' he added. In a related development, Parameshwara disclosed that he has urged Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to approve the construction of a 'Welcome' arch on the National Highway in Tumakuru, funded with Rs. 5 crore from the Smart City project. This initiative aims to enhance the district's visibility as it prepares for closer integration with Bengaluru's urban framework.
