South Korea karaoke owner inflicts severe injuries to customer, reports victim as ‘drunk'
SEOUL - A karaoke owner in South Korea has been sentenced to four years in prison after causing injury to a customer, resulting in death, and falsely reporting the circumstances of the case to emergency responders.
Incheon District Court said on April 28 that it convicted the 56-year-old defendant for the violent assault resulting in death that occurred at around 12.20am on Dec 1, 2024.
The defendant was indicted for beating the 64-year-old victim on the head three times after a quarrel over fees. The victim then tumbled down the stairs, causing further head injuries.
The defendant did not provide any aid to the victim, calling the 119 emergency services and reporting the victim as intoxicated.
This led to the emergency operators mistakenly assessing the victim's health status and sending the victim home without proper medical care.
The victim received medical treatment afterwards but died four days later, due to severe head damage and subsequent subdural hemorrhage.
In the ruling, the court said the bereaved family has suffered substantial shock and sadness from the sudden death of the victim, and has requested the defendant to receive a harsh punishment. THE KOREA HERALD/ASIA NEWS NETWORK

Norway outlaws sex without consent as Europe strengthens rape laws
OSLO - Norway strengthened its rape laws on Friday by criminalising sex without explicit consent, joining a growing list of countries to widen the definition of sexual attacks. Up to now, prosecutors have had to show that an attacker used violence or threatening behaviour, or had sexual intercourse with someone who was unable to resist, to secure a conviction for rape. Under the new law passed by parliament, anyone who has sex with someone who has not consented to it by word or deed could be convicted of rape, even without violence. Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland have all introduced consent-based rape laws in recent years. Sweden changed the legal definition of rape in 2018 to sex without consent - a change that officials said resulted in a 75% rise in rape convictions. Denmark followed in 2020 by passing a law that widened the circumstances that could constitute rape. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Three Iranians in UK court accused of assisting Tehran spy service
LONDON - Three Iranian men appeared in court in London on Friday accused of assisting Iran's foreign intelligence service and plotting violence against journalists working for a British-based broadcaster critical of Tehran. The three men - Mostafa Sepahvand, 39, Farhad Javadi Manesh, 44, and Shapoor Qalehali Khani Noori, 55, - have been charged with offences under Britain's National Security Act, brought in to give the authorities new powers to target threats from foreign states. They are accused of "engaging in conduct likely to assist a foreign intelligence service" between August 2024 and February this year, and police have said that it related to Iran. Sepahvand is also charged with carrying out surveillance in preparation to commit serious violence against a person, while Manesh and Noori were charged with surveillance with the intention that serious violent acts would be committed by others. The men appeared by videolink on Friday for a brief hearing at London's Old Bailey court during which their lawyers said all intended to plead not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors told a hearing last month that the allegations involved the targeting of journalists based in Britain connected with Iran International, a broadcaster critical of the Iranian government. They were remanded in custody until a formal plea hearing on September 26 and they are due to go on trial in October next year. The suspects were arrested last month on the same day counter-terrorism police detained five other men, including four Iranians, as part of a separate operation. Those men were later released without charge. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Caged monkey in M'sia spray-painted blue nowhere to be found; 62-year-old suspect released on bail
Caged monkey in M'sia spray-painted blue nowhere to be found; 62-year-old suspect released on bail PETALING JAYA - The fate and whereabouts of a caged monkey seen being spray-painted in a viral video remain unknown, said Selangor's Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) that has been unable to locate the animal. According to a statement from Perhilitan, a 62-year-old suspect, who has admitted to being the man in the video, had released the monkey from the cage on the same day he sprayed it with blue paint. 'The monkey involved in the incident was released by the suspect on the same day, but efforts by the department to locate and rescue the animal have so far been unsuccessful. 'It is believed that the animal has fled into a nearby forest,' Perhilitan told The Star via e-mail on June 6 . The department has also seized the monkey trap believed to have been used during the incident as part of its investigation. The incident is believed to have taken place on May 23 in a residential area in Sungai Buloh, Selangor. An official complaint was lodged with Perhilitan on May 24, prompting immediate enforcement action. 'The suspect, a 62-year-old local man, was arrested and taken to the Sungai Buloh district police headquarters for allegedly committing an offence under the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 (Act 716). 'He was later released on police bail,' the department added. The incident gained widespread attention after a video surfaced showing a man spraying blue paint directly onto a monkey confined in a cage. The footage sparked public outrage, with animal welfare activists and concerned citizens calling for firm action.
