
The looming ‘Islamophobia' scandal
This is why so many people are fearful of the proposal to have 'Islamophobia' defined by the state, and this fear is greatest among those who have felt the full force of our new censorial ethos: the British working class.
According to a new survey carried out by JL Partners, Angela Rayner's proposal for a new official definition of Islamophobia would hand Reform a 100-seat parliamentary majority at the expense of Labour. The poll of 2,000 adults concludes that bringing in the definition would cause a loss of one million votes to Labour, with a fall in its seats in the Commons from 155 to 103. The survey also found that 37 per cent of Britons felt that protections against hate speech had gone too far, with almost a third saying measures against Islamophobia had also gone too far.
Many live in fear of the 'cancel culture' that has evolved in recent decades, one that has established itself firmly in the mindset of those in authority. It is cited as one reason why the activity of the grooming gangs was ignored or enabled. It is said that councillors, the police and politicians were terrified of accusations of racism – accusations that today can ruin careers and shatter lives.
Many Britons suspect that a repeat of such a scandal would be made easier were 'Islamophobia' to be codified and applied across the public sector. As the Telegraph reminded us this morning, it was Dominic Grieve, the former Conservative cabinet who is chairing the working group currently establishing the definition of the word, who praised a 2019 report which called the discussion of 'grooming gangs' an example of 'anti-Muslim racism'.
Conflating criticism of Islam and the ethnicity of most of its adherents is an inevitable consequence of the definition of 'Islamophobia' produced by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on British Muslims in 2018. This defined the transgression as 'rooted in racism and… a type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness'. This conflation has been allowed to go unchallenged out of combination of lazy thinking and good intentions.
The definition was devised by those who hoped that by introducing the spectre of racism, our society's most heinous crime, they could both silence critics of a religion and excuse the behaviour of some who happen to have been brought up in that faith. Earlier this month, the think tank Policy Exchange released a report in which it said that the Muslim Council of Britain's media monitoring unit 'acted in bad faith' by trying to suppress accurate reporting about terrorism, by accusing the media of 'Islamophobic, negative' coverage in their efforts to do so.
Activists know the terror that accompanies accusations of racism, and much of the public lives in dread of it, too. This fear is increasingly accompanied by resentment among the white working-class, a feeling that they are disproportionately victimised and punished for their opinions and concerns. The name of Lucy Connolly, the mother sentenced to 31 months in prison after admitting to inciting racial hatred with a post on X, will continue to haunt this government. Her name will continue to be invoked whenever someone receives a lesser sentence for saying something even worse.
The cry of 'two-tier justice' has gained traction out of a mood that the Labour government accords different treatment to different demographic groups, a drive borne out of political ideology and naive benevolence. In their well-meaning efforts to promote inter-communal harmony and keep together an increasingly fractious multicultural society, those in authority have either ignored problems or acted with appeasement. These same motives have, in the eyes of many, resulted in rough justice meted out to those deemed to threaten social cohesion or might provoke a breach of the peace.
The taboo of 'Islamophobia' epitomises a culture in which subjectivity, 'perceptions' of racism, and the horror of giving or taking offence is moving away from the realm of manners, and into law.

Racing tax: What is it and why is the sport going on strike
For the first time in the modern history of the sport in Britain, its participants will voluntarily go on strike for a day. A day of protest will be held in Westminster. What does that mean? It means there will be no racing in Britain on September 10. The meetings scheduled for Lingfield, Carlisle, Uttoxeter and Kempton that day will not take place. They have been rescheduled to other dates. And why has all this come about? The strike announcement has come as part of British racing's 'Axe the Racing Tax' campaign, which is urging the Government to axe the Treasury's proposal to bring existing online betting duties into one single rate. Why would tax rises be so bad? Economic analysis commissioned by the British Horseracing Authority has shown that aligning the current tax rate paid by bookmakers on racing with that of online games of chance could see a £330 million revenue hit to the industry in the first five years, putting 2,752 jobs at risk in the first year alone. Strike action will surely cost the sport money? It will, it is estimated it will cost around £200,000 in lost revenue on the day. So does the racing industry support the strike move? In a word, yes. Racecourses, owners and trainers are all in agreement. The National Trainers Federation said cancelling fixtures was 'a huge sacrifice' which 'should serve as a stark reminder to the Government of the impact its tax raid will have on our sport'. Is this is a one-off, or will there be more strikes? No more strikes are planned, as things stand. Can I still have a bet anywhere that day? Yes, there will actually be one meeting in Ireland, at Cork. Irish racing is run completely separately to British racing.

Racing calls one-day strike over proposed betting tax rise
The four scheduled fixtures at Carlisle, Uttoxeter, Lingfield and Kempton will not take place after agreements between the owners of the courses and the British Horseracing Authority, making it the first time the sport has voluntarily refused to race in modern history. The BHA set up the 'Axe the Racing Tax' campaign in response to proposals to replace the existing three-tax structure of online gambling duties with a single tax, with fears the current 15 per cent duty on racing could be increased to the 21 per cent levied on games of chance. Brant Dunshea, chief executive at the British Horseracing Authority, said: 'We have decided to take the unprecedented decision to cancel our planned racing fixtures on September 10 to highlight to Government the serious consequences of the Treasury's tax proposals which threaten the very future of our sport. 'British racing is already in a precarious financial position and research has shown that a tax rise on racing could be catastrophic for the sport and the thousands of jobs that rely on it in towns and communities across the country. 'This is the first time that British racing has chosen not to race due to Government proposals. We haven't taken this decision lightly but in doing so we are urging the Government to rethink this tax proposal to protect the future of our sport which is a cherished part of Britain's heritage and culture. 'Our message to Government is clear: axe the racing tax and back British racing.' The four tracks involved are operated by the Jockey Club and the Arena Racing Company, with both backing the move. Jim Mullen, CEO at the Jockey Club, said: 'We hope this pause for reflection will enable the Government to truly understand the economic impact of horseracing and its cultural significance to communities across the UK, as well as the world-class racing festivals we host. 'After this period of reflection, we hope the full implications will be understood, and we can prevent the irreparable damage that threatens a sport the nation is, and should be, proud of.' Martin Cruddace, CEO at ARC, added: 'We have always been taxed and regulated differently, and it is imperative for our future that we continue to be so. 'If the Government wants Britain to be a world leader in online casino and a world pauper in a sport at the heart of its culture, then tax harmonisation will achieve that aim.' While the four meetings will be rescheduled, Paul Johnson, chief executive of the National Trainers Federation, underlined the 'sacrifice' in calling a halt to the sport for a day. He said: 'Cancelling fixtures is a huge sacrifice by racing and should serve as a stark reminder to the Government of the impact its tax raid will have on our sport. 'Thousands of jobs are at stake alongside the loss of millions of pounds to the British economy.' A Treasury spokesperson said: 'We are consulting on bringing the treatment of online betting in line with other forms of online gambling to cut down bureaucracy – it is not about increasing or decreasing rates, and we welcome views from all stakeholders including businesses, trade bodies, the third sector and individuals.'

Outrage as Reform councillor shares stage with 'neo-Nazi' at Falkirk protest
Protesters from the group Save Our Future and Our Kids Future demonstrated against "uncontrolled immigration" outside the Cladhan Hotel on Saturday, with Stand Up To Racism (SUTR) Scotland holding a counter-demonstration. According to witnesses and despite the group rejecting links to the far-right, attendees included several individuals openly displaying fascist symbols. The event was organised by a group led by Connor Graham who gained notoriety in 2019 after biting a police officer during an altercation. The group's name itself echoes extremist slogans used by white nationalists, most notably the so-called 'Fourteen Words' coined by American neo-Nazi David Lane. The primary slogan in the Fourteen Words is: "We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children". At the start of the rally, a handful of men performed Hitler salutes (above), and one man was seen with a large Black Sun tattoo on the back of his head — an emblem widely used in neo-Nazi circles (below). Another group held a banner reading 'Kill 'Em All: Let God Sort Them Out'. Claire Mackie-Brown, Reform UK Falkirk councillor for the Upper Braes, went on to share the stage with Patriotic Alternative member Richard McFarlane, who told the crowd that white people will be a minority in the UK 'by the 2060s'. Mackie-Brown quit the Tory party last February, and joined Reform UK in March this year. At the heart of its ideology is the 'white genocide' myth, with the group actively campaigning for the mass deportation of immigrants. The speeches ranged from conspiratorial to openly fascist. One speaker dismissed democracy altogether, claiming that 'all politicians are paedophiles" while McFarlane reiterated claims of 'white genocide". He added: 'We need to give them the fingers, and say we are white, we are British, we are proud and that we are not scared anymore,' he tells the crows, before listing two demands: an end to all mass immigration and the start of a deportation process to 'send all the illegals back'. He concludes with: 'Keep Britain White, Keep Britain British'. The video of the speech is stamped with PA branding and the group's logo throughout. Addressing Mackie-Brown's attendance, the witness said they "do not believe that there could have been any way she was unaware of the actions of other demonstrators, and so thought that this group of neo-Nazis, fascists, conspiracy theorists, and violent far-right thugs, was a good audience to be speaking to". A Reform UK spokesperson said: 'Councillor Claire Brown was there to represent Reform and her concerned constituents, she is not responsible for the other people attending and will continue to stand up for residents on this extremely important issue'. The group was previously involved in anti-migrant protests in Erskine and unfurled a 'white lives matter' banner at the top of Ben Nevis in 2021. We previously wrote about how PA and Unity News Network (UNN) – one of the most popular sources of information for the far right in the UK, which is run by a Scot – signed a joint declaration encouraging supporters to support and infiltrate Nigel Farage's party. Racist banners, flyers and posters created by the group were recently displayed at the Clydebank Bandstand. Similar banners were also attached to railings in front of the council chambers in Dumbarton and in Hamilton town centre during the Scottish Parliament by-election earlier this year.
