PM Modi speaks to Northeast leaders on floods, assures full support
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday spoke to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, and Manipur Governor Ajay Bhalla to take stock of the situation caused by heavy rainfall and floods in the northeastern region. PM Modi assured full help and support from the Centre.
Sharing an update on X, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "A short while ago, Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji called me to enquire about the current flood situation in Assam. I briefed him on how continuous rainfall in Assam and adjoining states has led to flooding and impacted many lives. I also apprised him of the relief operation undertaken by the state government."
He added, "The Hon'ble PM expressed concern and assured full support from the Central Government for our relief and rehabilitation efforts. Grateful for his guidance and unwavering support to the people of Assam."
Sikkim CM Prem Singh Tamang also shared a post on X, thanking PM Modi for his concern about the flood and landslide situation in the state.
He wrote, "Hon'ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, On behalf of the people of Sikkim, I extend my heartiest gratitude for your kind concern and support regarding the landslide and flood situation in the state. Our state administration remains fully committed to managing the situation and providing all necessary assistance to those affected. Thank you once again for your kind concern, Sir."
The flood situation in Assam remains critical, with the death toll rising to 11. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), six people died in floods while five others died in landslides across the state. More than 5.15 lakh people in 22 districts have been affected.
In Sikkim, the state government has officially declared the damage caused by continuous rainfall in Mangan district since May 28 as a "disaster" under Section 22(2)(b) of the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
Three army personnel died and six others went missing after a landslide triggered by heavy rain struck an Indian Army camp at Chaten in Lachen town on Sunday evening.
Meanwhile, in Manipur, the Fire Service, Assam Rifles, SDRF, NDRF, and Indian Army are carrying out joint evacuation operations to rescue stranded medical students and staff from the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) in Imphal. The campus has been severely affected by waterlogging due to continuous heavy rainfall. (ANI)

Right to freedom of speech does not extend to defamatory statements against Indian Army: HC dismisses Rahul Gandhi's plea
The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad high court has recently held that the right to freedom of speech and expression does not extend to making defamatory statements against the Indian Army. The high court made the observation while dismissing a petition filed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi who had challenged summons by a local court in connection with a case related to his alleged remarks on the Indian Army. A single judge bench of Justice Subhash Vidyarthi passed the order rejecting Rahul Gandhi's petition. 'No doubt, Article 19(1) of the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of speech and expression, this freedom is subject to the reasonable restrictions and it does not include the freedom to make statements which are defamatory to any person or defamatory to the Indian Army,' the high court observed in its June 2 order. It may be pointed out that additional chief judicial magistrate Alok Verma, Lucknow court, had directed Rahul Gandhi to appear before the court on March 24, 2025, in the defamation case filed against him. Gandhi had challenged the additional CJM's order passed on February 11, 2025, in the high court. Advocate Vivek Tewari had filed the complaint on behalf of Uday Shankar Srivastava, a former director of the Border Roads Organisation with a rank equivalent to an Army colonel. The complaint against Rahul Gandhi alleges that during the Bharat Jodo Yatra on December 16, 2022, he made a derogatory statement about a face-off between Indian and Chinese soldiers. This statement, according to the complainant, Uday Shankar Srivastava, was derogatory towards the Army and hurt the sentiments of the armed forces. 'In my considered opinion, the trial court has rightly arrived at the decision to summon the applicant to face trial for the offence under Section 500 IPC after taking into consideration all the relevant facts and circumstances of the case and after satisfying himself that a prima facie case for trial of the applicant is made out,' the high court observed. 'No doubt that the alleged utterances by the appellant (Rahul Gandhi) are not in good taste. A person in public life is expected to exercise a degree of restraint while making public speeches,' the high court observed. Additional advocate general Vinod Kumar Shahi opposed Rahul Gandhi's petition on behalf of the state government. The case will now proceed in the lower court where Rahul Gandhi will have to appear as an accused, said Shahi. The court's decision has significant implications for Rahul Gandhi, as he will have to defend himself against the allegations in the local court, added Shahi. 'Irresponsible statement of Rahul Gandhi has lowered the prestige of the Indian Army,' Shahi argued in court. .

Implement Vishwakarma scheme in full: BJP
Khammam: A petition was submitted by BJP ranks led by district president Nelluri Koteswara Rao to district revenue officer (DRO) Padmaja demanding that the Vishwakarma scheme, which was undertaken by the Central government, be fully implemented. Speaking on the occasion on Wednesday, Rao demanded that allowances be provided to artisans belonging to 18 categories along with training and a loan of Rs 1 lakh be sanctioned after the completion of the training. He said that more than 11,000 candidates applied across the district, but not even half of them were selected, and that the authorities should still pay attention and select all the eligible candidates and provide them with training, as well as grant them tool kits, training allowances and loans.

Projects worth Rs 35,000 crore underway under NHAI: Delhi CM
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said that major projects worth Rs 35,000 crore under NHAI are currently being built in the national capital, while earlier projects worth Rs 64,000 crore have been completed. More projects worth Rs 24,000 crore are also set to begin soon. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Delhi. Right now, a major project worth Rs 35,000 crore is being built in Delhi under the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Earlier, projects worth Rs 64,000 crore were successfully completed. In the near future, projects worth another Rs 24,000 crore, whose detailed project reports (DPRs) are ready, will also begin." Gupta said that several major road projects are being planned to reduce traffic jams and pollution in the city. To improve traffic flow, a 7-kilometre underground tunnel will be constructed from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Road. There will also be an elevated road connecting INA to the airport, which will later extend to Faridabad and Gurgaon. A new highway from Delhi to Katra and Amritsar will be developed and linked to the Urban Extension Road (UER 2). Another major highway will run from Alipur to Tronica City and will connect Delhi to Dehradun. This means people travelling from Haryana to Dehradun or from Dehradun to Noida won't need to enter Delhi, easing traffic inside the city. A tunnel from Sarai Kale Khan to Indira Gandhi Airport is also being considered. Several other roads in Delhi, including Rohtak Road, Nangloi, Ashram, Badarpur, and MJ Road, have been taken over by NHAI and will be made signal-free. Their work will start soon," Gupta said. "NHAI will look into the drainage system, and from that drainage systems will also be improved along these roads, solving long-standing issues of waterlogging caused by multiple agencies. PWD will also look into it. Additionally, Rs 150 crore has been approved for Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and Road Under Bridges (RUBs)," Gupta said. She said that ongoing and upcoming projects worth over Rs 1.25 lakh crore will help reduce traffic jams, lower pollution, and improve travel in and around Delhi. "Overall, I thank the Central Government for the projects worth Rs 1.25 lakh crore that are helping transform Delhi into a modern, clean, and green city.
