State and county emergency response officials are scheduled to testify on Wednesday, but no officials from Kerr County, the area most hard-hit by the floods, are expected to appear.

Lawmakers have filed bills to improve early warning systems and emergency communications and to provide relief funding. Kerr County, where 27 campers and counselors, most of them children, were killed at Camp Mystic, an all-girls Christian summer camp, does not have a warning system along the river after several missed opportunities by state and local agencies to finance one.
Three people remain missing. At one point, county officials said more than 170 people were unaccounted for.
Lawmakers are scheduled to visit Kerrville on July 31 to hear from residents.
Democrats have left open the possibility of filibusters or walking out in the coming weeks to block the proposed congressional map redraw. On Monday, most of the party's members in the House signed a letter to the speaker stating that they would not engage in any work before addressing flood relief.

But Democrats have few paths to resistance as the minority party in both chambers. Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton has threatened to arrest those who attempt to walk out on top of the $500 a day fines lawmakers face for breaking a quorum.

Rep. Elise Stefanik is holding off for now on a decision about the 2026 governor's race, saying she'll announce her plans after New York's elections for county and local offices on Nov. 4. Hochul gears up for campaign, faces familiar rival in Delgado Hochul, who took office in 2021 after Andrew Cuomo resigned as governor, won a full term in 2022 and plans to run for a second next year. Her own lieutenant governor, Antonio Delgado, is her only declared challenger at this point, having launched a campaign in June to run against her in a Democratic primary in June 2026. US and EU close in on 15% tariff deal, FT reports
(Reuters) -The EU and United States are closing in on a trade deal that would impose 15% tariffs on European imports, similar to the agreement U.S. President Donald Trump struck with Japan this week, the Financial Times reported on Wednesday. Both the EU and US would waive tariffs on some products, including aircraft, spirits and medical devices, the report said, citing people familiar with the matter. The bloc will continue to prepare a possible 93 billion euro ($109 billion) package of retaliatory tariffs, set at up to 30 per cent, in case they cannot agree a deal by August 1, the report added. The White House and a spokesperson for the European Union did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters could not immediately verify the FT report. The Commission earlier said on Wednesday its primary focus was to achieve a negotiated outcome with the United States to avert 30% U.S. tariffs that Trump has said he will impose on the 27-nation bloc on August 1. In 2024, the U.S. imported more than $55 billion of vehicles and automotive parts from Japan.
