Uttarakhand govt to hand out its 550 schools to industries for infrastructural revival

Dehradun, July 29 (UNI) The Uttarakhand government will hand out its 550 hillside schools to the industries in order to revive their infrastructures and other learning facilities for children in remote areas.
According to Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat, the government will ink MoUs (memorandums of understanding) for adoption of these schools with corporate houses by month end in the presence of Uttarakhand Governor and the Chief Minister.
Going by the officials of the state education department the schools being identified for privatisation include both primary and secondary schools. The new and unprecedented decision of Pushkar Singh Dhami government also allows non-resident Uttarakhand natives to adopt the schools.
According to the department's decision, firms taking over the schools will provide modern facilities like computer labs, libraries, and playgrounds in these institutions.
Dhan Singh Rawat said that decision as to permission for adoption of government schools by private firms is aimed at rejuvenation of remote and under-resourced government schools in the state.
"The State government has resorsted to a new initiative to provide better and modern education environment in association with industrial houses. Nearly 550 government schools, mainly from hill areas, will be directly linked with industrial houses through their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. These schools will be formally adopted by industrialists to provide them with modern study resources for the children in the hill areas" said state education minister.
The minister added "besides facilitating study materials adopting industrial houses will also look after the renovation of the building infrastructure of the schools. The facilities will include renovation of the school buildings, playgrounds, clean toilets, sports materials and host of other needed services to the students. Industrial houses to be roped for adoption of the schools have already given their in-principle agreement to the government."
Minister informed school adoption MoUs under CSR initiative will be signed with industrial houses at a special event to be held at Raj Bhavan on July 30 in the leadership of Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh and Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami.

Rioters in Sambhal face the wrath of 'Mahakal': CM Yogi Adityanath

Sambhal, Aug 7 (UNI) Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath lashed out at political rivals and historical wrongs, declaring Sambhal a sacred symbol of Hindu faith. CM Yogi took aim at foreign invaders, Congress, and the Samajwadi Party, warning that 'those who sinned against Sambhal will face stern retribution.' CM was in Sambhal on Thursday where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for 222 development projects worth Rs 659 crore in Bahjoi. Addressing a public gathering on the occasion, CM Yogi while launching a sharp attack on foreign invaders, unveiled Sambhal's suppressed history. He said the town once boasted 68 pilgrimage sites, 19 sacred wells, and traditional 24- and 84-kos parikrama routes — all desecrated and destroyed by invaders. These holy sites were taken over, and a deliberate attempt was made to erase the truth, he asserted. Calling it a 'malicious conspiracy,' CM Yogi Adityanath vowed to restore all 68 shrines and 19 sacred wells in Sambhal. Citing Lokmata Ahilyabai Holkar's revival of Kashi Vishwanath and Somnath temples, he pledged a similar renaissance for Sambhal's heritage. 'True development,' he said, 'lies in preserving legacy while shaping the golden dreams of today and tomorrow.' Emphasizing Sambhal's spiritual significance, CM Yogi said it is a sacred land of both Hari (Vishnu) and Har (Shiva), and foretold in scriptures like the Shrimad Bhagavat, Skanda, and Vishnu Puranas as the birthplace of Lord Kalki in Kaliyug. Hitting out at those who label Hindu traditions as controversial, he said, 'Their background is controversial, so they see our heritage the same way — but this is not up for dispute.' He warned that all such malicious attempts to undermine Sanatan Dharma will be firmly crushed. Referencing the revival of Kashi and Ayodhya, CM Yogi asked, 'If they can be restored, why not Sambhal?' He reaffirmed his government's resolve to rejuvenate Lord Kalki's shrine and Harihar Dham. Taking aim at Congress and SP, he said, 'Congress orchestrated mass killings here, and SP, as its disciple, shielded the murderers. Never forget their sins against Sambhal.' 'They hid the truth of post-independence massacres out of fear of losing their vote bank,' said CM Yogi Adityanath. 'We are not here for vote bank politics- we are here to preserve our heritage. Those who shame India and its values will be taught a lesson their future generations won't forget.' Taking a tough stand against rioters and anarchists, CM Yogi said past governments allowed riots, lawlessness, and exploitation to flourish. 'Girls weren't safe, traders weren't safe. But today, every citizen in UP is secure—except the rioters. Mahakal is delivering justice,' he stated. The Chief Minister emphasized that the evil intentions of those trying to hide the truth of Sambhal will be crushed. 'Those who sinned against Sambhal will face punishment. Those trying to hinder Sambhal's development will pay the price. Those who desecrate the holy sites of Sanatan Dharma will also pay the price', he said. Highlighting his government's achievements, CM Yogi said that over the past eight years, 8.5 lakh jobs have been provided, including the recent police recruitment of 60,200 youth. He slammed previous governments, saying they nurtured one mafia per district, whereas his government is promoting the 'One District, One Product' scheme. He mentioned key welfare initiatives such as housing for the poor, free ration, grants for daughters' weddings, and health services. Highlighting the upcoming festivals, CM Yogi noted that August 9 marks both Raksha Bandhan and Kakori Train Action Memorial Day, followed by Independence Day on August 15 and Shri Krishna Janmashtami on August 16. Echoing PM Modi's call, he urged citizens to hoist the national flag. Praising the resilience of Sambhal's people, he said they faced riots with courage and never bowed down. He assured them that the double-engine government is firmly committed to both heritage preservation and development. CM Yogi said the projects inaugurated today are just a glimpse of what's to come. He highlighted that 222 projects worth ₹659 crore have been launched in Sambhal, covering education, vocational training, drinking water, roads, Anganwadi centres, and infrastructure for composite schools. US President Donald Trump vows to intensify economic pressure on India via secondary sanctions

Washington, Aug 7 (UNI) US President Donald Trump has vowed to intensify economic pressure on India over its purchase of Russian oil, implying that these pressures would likely materialise in the form of secondary sanctions. Despite India being one of the US' most prominent trading partners, and the two nations sharing high-level-diplomatic ties, Trump has levied a massive 25% tariff on all imports from the south Asian giant as a punitive measure over New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil and gas. Trump has stated that he will be enacting an additional 25% tariffs on India, bringing the total percentage up to 50% for the world's fourth largest economy, and Washington's ninth-largest trading partner. 'It's only been 8 hours. So, let's see what happens. You're going to see a lot more... You're going to see so much secondary sanctions,' Trump said in response to a question regarding why India was being singled out for its oil purchases from Russia, reports RT. Secondary sanctions are penalties that target third parties who interact with a sanctioned country, with the aim to limit their access to the sanctioning country's market. 'For us, the interest of farmers is our top priority,' Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in response to the sanctions yesterday. 'India will never compromise on the interests of farmers, fishermen, and dairy producers. I know we will have to pay a heavy price for it and I'm ready. India is ready for it," he said. UNI ANV SSP

Home cooked veg thali cost went up by 4 pc and non-veg thali down by 2 pc in July

Chennai, Aug 7 (UNI) In July 2025, the cost of home-cooked vegetarian thali went down by 14% and 13% respectively as compared to same period in 2024 owing to benign commodity prices, as per CRISIL Market Intelligence report. However the cost of home cooked vegetarian thali in July showed a 4% increase over June 2025 while the non-vegetarian food showed a 2% decline for the same period. The decline in vegetarian thali cost year-on-year was led by a sharp drop in the prices of vegetables—primarily tomato, onion and potato (TOP)—on a high base. The prices of tomato fell 36% on-year to Rs.42 per kg in July from Rs.66/kg driven by a high base effect as the prices typically surge around July/August due to seasonality, even breaching Rs. 100 per kg in 2023. Potato and onion prices declined 30% and 36% on-year respectively on a high base. In the year-ago period, potato production dropped 5-7% due to blight infestations and weather changes, which led to a rise in prices. For onion, an 18-20% rise in annual production led to a dip in prices in 2025. Similarly prices of pulses declined 14% on-year, driven by higher production and stock levels compared with the year-ago period and the cost of rice declined 4% on-year. On the other hand, despite a reduction in basic custom duty (BCD) on crude edible oils, vegetable oil prices surged 20% on-year as the benefits of lower BCD have not yet been completely passed on to customers, the report noted. Additionally, a 6% on-year increase in liquefied petroleum gas cylinder prices limited the decline in the overall cost of thalis. As regards the decline in the cost of a non-vegetarian thali was driven by lower vegetable prices and an estimated 12$ on-year drop in broiler prices, which make up about 50% of its cost. On-month, the cost of vegetarian thali rose 4%, while non-vegetarian thali declined 2% in July. The cost increased due to a 31% surge in Tomato prices owing to lower arrivals. The prices of potato and onion edged up 2% and 5% on-month respectively, the report said. In respect of the non-vegetarian thali, an estimated 9% on-month drop in broiler prices contributed to the dip in the cost of a non-vegetarian thali. Broiler prices declined amid lower demand during monsoon and the onset of the Shravan month when a section of the population typically avoids consuming meat, the report noted. The average cost of preparing a thali at home is calculated based on input prices prevailing in north, south, east and west India. A veg thali comprises roti, vegetables (onion, tomato and potato), rice, dal, curd and salad. A non-veg thali has the same elements, except dal, which is replaced by chicken (broiler); broiler prices for July 2025 are estimated figures; weightage of ingredients does not vary based on volatility in commodity prices.
