Tottenham make initial approach for new number six

Yahoo26-07-2025
Tottenham have made an initial approach to Joao Palhinha's representatives to discuss a deal for the Bayern Munich midfielder.
Palhinha joined Bayern from Fulham last summer but endured a difficult debut season in Germany.
Despite winning the Bundesliga title, he made just six starts in the Bundesliga and Bayern are open to his exit this summer.
Several Premier League teams have expressed interest in the Portugal international, who shone during his two seasons at Fulham.
Palhinha led the Premier League for tackles won in consecutive campaigns during his previous spell in England. Spurs now want to sign the 30-year-old to reinforce their midfield options.
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Spurs have made an initial approach to the player's camp, though no formal offer has yet been sent to Bayern.
It is believed the German champions would be prepared to accept an offer around half the £43.2m fee paid to sign Palhinha last summer.
A move to North London would provide Palhinha Champions League football and regular minutes, as he looks to assure his place in Portugal's plans for next summer's World Cup.

India's Siraj 'woke up believing' ahead of Test heroics

Mohammed Siraj said he never lost faith in his own ability to deliver a sensational victory for India in the fifth and deciding Test at the Oval on Monday. England, set 374 to win, lost a nail-biting encounter by just six runs, with Siraj returning innings figures of 5-104 as India ended a rollercoaster campaign level at 2-2. The hosts resumed on Monday's final day on 339-6, needing just 35 more runs for a win that would have given them a 3-1 series success. But they had no answer to the enduring skill of fast bowler Siraj, who featured in all five games. He undid England on Monday with a brilliant burst of 3-9 in 25 balls, ending the match in style when he knocked over Gus Atkinson's off-stump. "From the first day until the fifth game, fifth day, we have fought an unbelievable fight," said Siraj, who bowled a marathon 185.3 overs during the series. "God must have written something good for me, that's why I won this match and took the last wicket. "When I woke up today, I thought I could do it. I downloaded a picture from Google saying 'believe'." The 31-year-old was named player of the match after an overall return of 9-190. Siraj redeemed himself in spectacular fashion after stepping over the boundary rope on Sunday in the act of catching Harry Brook, thereby conceding a six. Brook (111) and Joe Root (105) took the game by the scruff of the neck with a fourth-wicket stand of 195, putting England on course for victory. "I thought the Brook drop was a game-changing moment," said Siraj the leading bowler on either side in the series with 23 wickets at 32.43. "If it had been taken, we might not have come out today." India captain Shubman Gill, alongside Siraj at a post-match press conference, jokingly added: "If he had taken the catch, the game would have been too easy for us." England were in command at 301-3 and on course to break the record run chase in the fourth innings of an Oval Test of 263-9 that has stood since 1902. - England collapse - But India fought back superbly, taking England's last seven wickets for just 66 runs. "What we did this morning kind of summarised what this team is all about," said Gill. "The way Brook and Root were going, not many teams in the world would have given themselves a chance, but this team believes that whenever we have some kind of an opening, we can get through." Gill's first series as India captain was a personal triumph as he scored a mammoth 754 runs, including four centuries. "Each hundred that I scored had a very different significance," said the 25-year-old. "The one in Leeds was my first match (as captain), I was under a bit of pressure. "Then the double hundred and the hundred in Birmingham (where India won the second Test), to be able to seal that match was also special and the one in Manchester (in the drawn fourth Test), to be able to save that game from there, each of them has a story and each of them means a lot to me." jdg/jw/nf

Chelsea's Lesley Ugochukwu nearing Burnley move

Lesley Ugochukwu (21) looks set to complete a permanent move away from Chelsea, according to a report from . Ugochukwu completed a €27m move from formative club Stade Rennais to Chelsea back in the summer of 2023, however, the France youth international failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge. As a result, he spent last season on loan at Southampton. During his time with the Saints, he made 31 appearances, however, he could not save the club from relegation back to the EFL Championship. He did not remain at Saint Mary's, instead returning to parent club Chelsea, with whom he has made a mere 15 appearances. However, his time at Stamford Bridge is seemingly coming to an end. The Athletic understands that Burnley have reached an agreement with Chelsea to sign the Frenchman on a permanent deal. Newcastle United make Malick Thiaw enquiry

Newcastle United have made an enquiry for AC Milan's Malick Thiaw, according to journalist Matteo Moretto. Thiaw has been on the Magpies' radar for the past two seasons and has emerged as a target once again this summer as Newcastle gear up for another campaign of European football. The 23-year-old was reportedly watched by Newcastle scouts during Milan's pre-season tour in Hong Kong, where he impressed in a 4-2 triumph over Premier League champions Liverpool. Newcastle have been targeting a new centre-back for the past two windows and were strongly linked with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi last summer, albeit all to no avail. They are still in the market for defensive reinforcement. Thiaw was wanted by Como earlier this summer, and despite Milan accepting an offer from Como for his services, the German opted against a move. This hesitation has opened the door for Newcastle to make a more attractive offer and potentially lure Thiaw to St James' Park. Thiaw would offer Newcastle versatility along with youth and experience. While he is primarily a centre-back, he can also fill in as a right-back or defensive midfielder. Thiaw's arrival would be majorly to partner Sven Botman and form a robust partnership capable of competing domestically and on the continental front. Meanwhile, Newcastle have other names on their defensive wishlist, with Atalanta's Giorgio Scalvini and Roma's Eva Ndicka being mooted. Eddie Howe's side could also reignite their interest in Guehi as the Englishman enters the final year of his contract at Selhurst Park.
