Ian Poulter's son with huge chance to qualify for Open after outscoring his dad
Poulter Jnr, the amateur who missed out by a shot from securing a berth at last month's US Open, fired a five-under 67 at this famous Kent links to stand in a tie for third in the 72-man field, with five set to advance to Royal Portrush in a fortnight's time.
Poulter Snr, 49, is not yet out of it, after recovering from early dropped shots to post a level-par 72 and stand just outside the top 20. Spaniard David Puig set the pace on eight under with American Maxwell Moldovan two behind in second.
However, the former world No 5 will be just as interested – if not even more so – in the progress of his 21-year-old heir, who in recent months has been carving himself quite the name.
After recovering from career-threatening back surgery last year, the student at the University of Florida won his first event on the US College circuit and has recently been picked for the England senior team. He has a different character to Ian – far less flamboyant and with a much calmer temperament – but he obviously has inherited the battling qualities of the Ryder Cup legend. And indeed the confidence.
Not only is Poulter Snr in his rear-view mirror here, but another Europe colossus in Graeme McDowell – in a tie for 13th on two under – and other European Tour winners in Matthew Southgate and Tom Lewis are also playing catch-up with Poulter Jnr.
Of course, the dream for the Poulter family is for both to earn their way to the Dunluce links and so follow in the Open's grand father-and-son tradition, which first featured Old Tom Morris and Young Tom Morris, as well as Willie Park Snr and Willie Park Jnr in the championship's formative years. The last father-and-son combination to appear at the same major was Craig and Kevin Stadler at the 2014 Masters.
Poulter Snr's LIV team-mate Lee Westwood is playing at Dundonald Links as he also seeks a start in the Open for the first time since 2022, and at the halfway stage, the 52-year-old is in a tie for fifth on two under, three behind fellow Briton Jordan Sundborg.
However, another member of the Majesticks team on the Saudi-funded circuit walked off the course at West Lancashire mid-round. Sam Horsfield was seven-over after nine holes when he effectively disqualified himself by making a sharp exit at the Liverpool links.

Yoane Wissa's future needs to be resolved soon – Brentford boss Keith Andrews
Brentford boss Keith Andrews does not know how Yoane Wissa's transfer situation will play out. Wissa was not involved in Sunday's Premier League opener at Nottingham Forest, where the Bees went down to a 3-1 defeat. The 28-year-old wants to follow Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard out of the club during the summer transfer window, with Newcastle strongly linked with a bid, and Andrews said before the match he was not in the right head space to play. 'It's a day-by-day one in terms of Wiss,' the Irishman said. 'As far as I know nothing else has happened today, definitely didn't yesterday, so as it was really. 'I have no idea what the situation will be, I have been up here since yesterday so we will deal with that during the week. 'Hopefully it can resolve itself sooner rather than later.' Andrews, whose first game in management could not have gone much worse as Forest rampaged to a 3-0 half-time lead thanks to Chris Wood's double and Dan Ndoye's header, insists the club-record signing of Dango Ouattara will not start a domino effect of movement. 'I don't see it, I see Dango as Bryan's replacement in terms of that area of the pitch, I see him as a versatile forward that I am really happy we have managed to get on board,' Andrews added, after seeing Igor Thiago score a second-half penalty. 'We weren't really aware he would be available, as soon as we knew it was a pretty easy decision to get him on board. 'Thankfully the club have been able to do that and it is a really significant investment for us. It will be a brilliant investment.' Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries. Nuno expressed his 'concern' for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad. After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show. But Nuno says the display does not change Forest's situation, with Arnaud Kalimuendo having a medical ahead of a move from Rennes and links to Juventus' Douglas Luiz and Manchester City's Rico Lewis. 'The needs of the squad are still there, it doesn't change anything,' he said. 'We are going to go day-by-day. 'We still need. Hopefully this work continues. The sooner we settle down the squad the better. 'The club knows the needs of the squad so we have to be patient and see. The faster they come, the better. 'This week a lot of things are going to happen, not only Forest, I think a lot of teams are still operating in the market. We have to wait and be patient. 'Of course (I feel better). It doesn't change, the needs are clear, the club knows. Now I am delighted, I just want to go home and celebrate because it is a beautiful start to the season. I couldn't have expected better than this.'

Nottingham Forest ease Nuno Espirito Santo's fears by sweeping aside Brentford
Nottingham Forest made a mockery of Nuno Espirito Santo's pre-match worries as they beat Brentford 3-1 in their opening game of the Premier League season. Nuno expressed his 'concern' for the campaign ahead of the match, citing a lack of options in his squad, but he will feel better after a rampant display at the City Ground. Advertisement After new signings Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee were unveiled before kick-off, their new team-mates put on a show as Chris Wood's double and a debut goal for Dan Ndoye put them 3-0 up at the break. With more signings to come and a Europa League journey to look forward to after last season's seventh-place finish, Forest fans may have more optimism than their manager after this opener. It was the start that new Brentford boss Keith Andrews would have dreaded. With Bryan Mbeumo and Christian Norgaard sold over the summer and Yoane Wissa effectively on strike trying to force a move away, Andrews has not been handed the easiest of tasks in his first managerial role. Advertisement Igor Thiago got the Bees on the scoresheet with a second-half penalty, but life after Thomas Frank began poorly. Forest had only scored one goal in six excruciating pre-season friendlies, but they needed just six minutes to break the deadlock. Elliot Anderson's corner fell to Wood and the striker picked up where he left off last season by slamming home the loose ball from close range. Such was the novelty of scoring a goal, the celebrations on the touchline were wild, with goalkeeping coach Rui Barbosa needing medical treatment after hitting his head on the roof of the dugout and suffering a nasty cut. Advertisement Forest were electric and almost scored a brilliant team goal as new signing Ndoye, Morgan Gibbs-White and Anderson all combined, with the latter seeing a goalbound shot well blocked by Sepp van den Berg. Brentford looked to establish themselves in the game and forced goalkeeper Matz Sels into a good save when Yehor Yarmolyuk fizzed in a low shot. But Forest continued to dominate and two goals in five minutes before half-time sent them into dreamland. In the 42nd minute Gibbs-White arced in a delicious cross for Ndoye to send a flying header into the top corner. Advertisement Then in the second minute of time added on Wood doubled his tally when he latched on to Anderson's through ball and rounded Caoimhin Kelleher to put it in an empty net. Forest were irresistible after the break as they searched for more goals. Callum Hudson-Odoi, on the brink of signing a new contract, stung the palms of Kelleher before Gibbs-White hooked an acrobatic effort just over the crossbar. Brentford brought on Jordan Henderson in the 68th minute as they tried to stem the tide and 10 minutes later they had reduced their deficit. Advertisement Forest midfielder Ibrahim Sangare handled the ball in the area and Thiago rolled home the resulting penalty. There was no grandstand finish, though, as Forest got their season off to a winning start.
