Dan Ashworth returns to Football Association as chief football officer

The 54-year-old served as the governing body's director of elite development between 2013 and 2018 before taking positions at Brighton and Newcastle ahead of an ill-fated five-month stay at Old Trafford which ended in December.
The newly-created role will see Ashworth take oversight of the England men's and women's teams.
Dan Ashworth has been appointed as our first chief football officer to lead the high-performance strategy and new-look St. George's Park.
— The FA (@FA) May 14, 2025
FA chief executive Mark Bullingham said: 'Dan is a hugely influential and respected figure in the game, who has a long-standing commitment to England Football.
'We are very happy to welcome him back in this new role.'
After Ashworth's departure from Manchester United – his recruitment and untimely exit cost the club £4.1million – co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe described both his appointment in July 2024 and the retention of then manager Erik ten Hag as 'errors'.
The former Norwich Academy player cut his teeth as a sports administrator at Peterborough and Cambridge before making his name as a shrewd operator as West Brom's sporting and technical director.
His work with the FA, where he was credited as one of the driving forces behind the England men's team reaching the semi-finals at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, raised his profile significantly, and the part he played in Brighton's rise as their technical director prompted Newcastle's new Saudi-backed owners to make him their sporting director in 2022.
United fought hard to lure him across the Pennines and eventually got their man, only to dispense with his services summarily amid the club's ongoing problems on the pitch and Ratcliffe's restructuring work off it.
In his new position back at the FA, he will work closely with men's technical director John McDermott and Kay Cossington's successor in the women's role.
He will also oversee the development of St. George's Park.

Man Utd braced for second transfer blow as Bruno Fernandes back-up plan emerges

Manchester United are making big moves in the transfer market having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while Bryan Mbeumo is expected to arrive soon from Brentford Manchester United are set to be handed two transfer blows after reports that Saudi clubs are rivalling them to sign Napoli forward Victor Osimhen and Atalanta's Ederson. The Red Devils are preparing for a big summer in the transfer market as Ruben Amorim looks to overhaul his struggling squad that finished 15th in the Premier League. The Red Devils have already signed Wolves forward Matheus Cunha and look close to signing Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo, but Amorim won't be satisfied there. ‌ After watching forwards Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee score just seven goals between them in the Premier League this season, Amorim will be desperate for more firepower. ‌ United have been linked with a move for Napoli's Osimhen, who has just spent the season on loan at Galatasaray. However, his future looks finished in Naples after falling out with boss Antonio Conte and expressing a desire to leave. But according to L'Equipe, Saudi officials are currently in talks over a deal for Osimhen - with Al-Hilal eager for the player to join should former Fulham star Aleksandar Mitrovic end up leaving. Al-Hilal are also interested in Ederson, who they have turned their attentions to after being turned down by United captain Bruno Fernandes, who wants to continue playing in Europe. Amorim has prioritised strengthening his options in the middle of the park, but the club's priority is bolstering their attack - with Cunha the first step in that plan. United plan to make more movements towards signing a new central midfielder once they have confirmed a few more outgoing players, with Casemiro not getting any younger at 33. Amorim is a huge admirer of Ederson, who started 32 times for Atalanta this season. ‌ But now Al-Hilal look set to disrupt United's summer plans by pushing for both Osimhen and Ederson - with the Saudi side able to offer much higher wages - after being rejected by Fernandes. With Fernandes likely to stay, it does mean United won't collect the £100m fee that Al-Hilal were ready to pay - meaning they'll have to find more ways of spending their money while also staying within PSR regulations. Al-Hilal were willing to hand Fernandes £700,000-a-week if he moved to Saudi Arabia, but Fernandes has said no to the switch - despite being aware of the riches on offer and how it would benefit United. Fernandes doesn't want to uproot his family in Manchester and make a major cultural change by moving to the Middle East. He is also eager to play more football at the highest level in Europe for the time being.

Aberdeen ‘set to battle Premiership rivals in transfer race for SPFL side's top scorer'

ABERDEEN have reportedly entered the race for one of Scottish football's hottest properties - but face stiff competition from several clubs. Jimmy Thelin is aiming to add more quality to his Scottish Cup winning squad this summer and one position he's looking at is a new striker. 2 Jimmy Thelin is keen to add to his squad Credit: Andrew Barr 2 He could snap up a top player in Scotland Credit: Willie Vass Kevin Nisbet is set to return to Millwall following his loan spell, while Oday Dabbagh's future at Pittodrie is currently unclear despite the Dons having an option to sign him permanently from Charleroi. Aberdeen have yet to trigger a deal for the Palestinian forward as things stand. Thelin, 47, is assessing his options elsewhere and is expected to complete at least one swoop for another hitman. And it looks like he's found his next man right here in Scotland. The Belfast Telegraph claim Aberdeen are readying move for Ross County talisman Ronan Hale. Hale, 26, is currently with the Northern Ireland squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Denmark and Iceland, but he will have a decision to make on his future when he returns to Dingwall. The former Cliftonville striker is expected to leave the Staggies after just one year following their relegation to the Championship. Hale scored two goals against Livingston in the Premiership play-off but he couldn't prevent his side from the drop and has likely played his last game for the club. It's said Aberdeen will face a battle to sign him as Dundee are also interested, along with a host of English clubs. EFL League One sides Wigan Athletic, Luton Town and Port Vale have all been reportedly keeping tabs on him as well. Aberdeen's Scottish Cup-winning heroes greeted by thousands on open top bus parade through the city after beating Celtic Hale scored 18 goals in all competitions for Ross County during the 2024/25 campaign. He could make his international bow for Michael O'Neil's side in the coming days after switching allegiances from the Republic of Ireland this year. The Staggies will command a healthy fee for the 26-year-old after he penned a three-year deal when he arrived at Dingwall last year. Bruno Fernandes reveals four reasons for staying at Man Utd after £300m offer

Manchester United were handed a major boost after Bruno Fernandes announced he had declined a huge move to Saudi Arabia this summer as the Portuguese playmaker insisted he wanted to stay at the top level Bruno Fernandes has made his reasons clear for wanting to stay at Manchester United and snub a lucrative move to Al-Hilal this summer. The United skipper looked certain to move to Saudi Arabia after reports Al-Hilal were ready to pay a £300million package to secure his signature. United would have collected a £100m transfer fee, with Bruno Fernandes being handed an eye-watering contract worth around £200m in a move that would see him join up with countrymen Joao Cancelo and Ruben Neves. ‌ But Fernandes released a statement on Tuesday night explaining primarily that he wants to continue playing at the highest level possible in Europe and fully believes he is capable of doing so. ‌ 'It would have been an easy move," he said. "I had Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo there, two people I have a great friendship with. But I want to stay at the highest level, play in big competitions, because I still feel capable." Another factor was Ruben Amorim wanting him to stay at Old Trafford. The coach has always maintained he did not want to let his captain leave and hoped the Portugal international would spearhead the team's revival under his leadership. Speaking after their post-season tour in Asia, he said: "I think he wants to stay. He is saying no to a lot of things but he chose that he wants to win. I think he's really good and he needs to be on the best league in the world." United's support of Fernandes also helped his decision. The club hierarchy were relaxed about his future either way and although they missed out on a huge payday that would have eased their financial situation, having Fernandes on board will be a huge boost to their hopes of returning to for next season. The 30-year-old also cited his family as a major reason for him snubbing Saudi interest. He did not want to uproot his family from their settled life in Manchester and force a culture change in the Middle East. His wife Ana Pinho is said to have been crucial in the decision to stay. ‌ Fernandes explained: "I spoke with my family to understand if that was what I wanted for my future,' Fernandes said ahead of Portugal's Nations League semi-final against Germany tonight. "It was actually my wife who asked me — I never said yes or no. She put my professional priorities ahead of everything else." Now that he has clarified his position, Amorim will hope to have him on board for his rebuild of the team that has already seen him sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves, while Bryan Mbeumo is expected to join from Brentford imminently.
