Sabah eyes Tuaran on global eco-tourism map with ambitious Unesco geopark push

TUARAN, May 3 — The Sabah government has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding the Kinabalu UNESCO Global Geopark (KUGGP) and Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve as part of its sustainable development goals under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said the expansion aligns with Sabah's position as one of only three locations worldwide to achieve the prestigious 'Triple Crown of UNESCO' recognition.
'This is not only an honour but also a big responsibility. We must strengthen the scientific foundation, enhance public awareness, and preserve our natural resources sustainably,' he said in a statement here today.
Earlier, Hajiji launched the Stakeholders and Local Communities' Consultation Process and the Scientific Expedition for the Expansion of KUGGP and Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve at Linangkit Cultural Village here.
The Chief Minister said the proposed expansion of KUGGP into the Tuaran district here has received full state government backing, citing the area's rich biodiversity and significant eco-tourism potential.
He said plans are also underway to establish a Public Awareness Centre or information gallery in Tuaran to meet UNESCO criteria, which will serve as an educational platform for local communities.
Hajiji emphasised that the geopark's development should extend beyond science and conservation to include economic empowerment through geoheritage-based tourism.
'The state government will also conduct additional scientific expeditions in the Crocker Range area, encompassing Ranau and Tuaran districts, as preparation for expanding the Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve.
'The recent completion of the Geo-Sulaman Scientific Expedition (EGOS 2025) will provide foundational data for developing management plans and educational materials related to the Geopark expansion,' he said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- The proposed establishment of the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Commission is expected to strengthen its mandate and broaden its role, in advancing the national TVET transformation agenda. Polytechnic and Community College Education Department director-general Datuk Dr Mohd Zahari Ismail said the commission, if realised, could function as an independent and autonomous body, with the authority to formulate policies, set standards, and oversee the implementation of TVET programmes, nationwide. Unlike the National TVET Council, which serves as a policy and coordination platform without legislative authority, Mohd Zahari said that the proposed TVET Commission would have the mandate to approve programmes, regulate institutions, and ensure quality, in line with the national education framework. 'It would address the fragmentation within the current TVET system, which involves multiple ministries, and enable more consistent collaboration between industry players, institutions, and the government,' he told Bernama when contacted. Yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that the government is considering a proposal to establish a TVET Commission, as part of efforts to further strengthen technical and vocational education and training (TVET) in the country. Prof Dr Mohamad Sattar Rasul, chairman of the Centre for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Enculturation, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's (UKM), said that the proposed establishment of the commission would enable more effective monitoring of TVET programme implementation. 'The authority to oversee TVET implementation is crucial, to ensure a more harmonised approach, as many programmes under different ministries currently overlap or compete with one another,' he said. He said that the establishment of the TVET Commission would help create a more structured and effective technical education and training landscape in the country. He added that the TVET sector holds strong potential to become a key driver of the national economy, while also providing broad employment opportunities for future generations.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 13 (Bernama) -- PETRONAS and the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team will be collaborating to launch the Blue Carbon Collective, a South-South research initiative that aims to advance research and knowledge exchange on carbon capture and storage in mangrove ecosystems. The Collective will build upon the ongoing cooperation between the University of São Paulo (USP) and Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), fostering collaboration and resource sharing between two countries in the southern hemisphere – Malaysia and Brazil. The announcement took place at the inaugural Energy and Nature Forum, hosted by PETRONAS in Kuala Lumpur, which aims to put a spotlight on the intersection of energy and nature by bringing together global leaders from both fields. PETRONAS also unveiled its first ever nature and resource efficiency targets at the Forum which, together with the Blue Carbon Collective, reinforces the company's commitment to use natural resources responsibly and to engage in practices that restore, protect and conserve ecosystems in countries where it operates.

'UTM Rocketry Team' Creates History By Reaching IREC 2025 Finals

JOHOR BAHRU, June 13 (Bernama) -- A group of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) students created history by launching their homemade rocket "RIMAU-1" in the International Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC) 2025, currently taking place in Midland, Texas, in the United States. UTM said in a statement that this achievement makes the university the first Malaysian team to advance to the final stages of this prestigious six-day competition, organised by the Tripoli Rocketry Association, which is ending tomorrow (June 14) thereby bringing honour to the country on the global stage. According to the statement, the team known as the UTM Rocketry Team, led by mechanical engineering final-year student T K Arykummara together with teammates Brenden Huang Hong Quan, K Raahull, Izzat Idlan Amir Raslan and S N Shivee Prakkaash, who represent a combination of students from the mechanical engineering and electrical engineering faculties. "Interestingly, the team also developed a rocket parachute system as a safety measure, in addition to using ammonium perchlorate as the main propulsion system to reach the target altitude of 3,000 metres (m) in Texas airspace. "In addition, the cost of constructing RIMAU-1 is estimated at RM40,000, while the total cost including travel and logistics reaches RM200,000. (Moreover) this project also received support and financial assistance from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs (JTNCHEPA), UTM International (UTMI) as well as several other sources," said the statement. Meanwhile, Arykummara in the same statement said the rocket named RIMAU-1, which is 2.8 m in height and weighs 28 kilogrammes, was built using fiberglass and carbon material, and is expected to reach a maximum height of up to 3,000 m in accordance with the height requirements set by the organisers. He said the process to build the rocket was not just about assembling components but involved intensive research, repeated testing, and meticulous attention to every technical and safety aspect. "The handmade rocket took a total of more than nine months to build and was the result of teamwork, consisting of 40 people from various technical disciplines. The project began early testing in January and was only seriously worked on starting in March, with an intensive two-month construction period. "Therefore, this participation is not just a competition, but a symbol of our team's spirit of innovation, resilience, and cooperation bringing the Malaysian spirit to the international stage," said Arykummara.
