NEW DELHI: Following India's narrow loss at Lord's in the third Test against England, former India captain Sourav Ganguly shared his views on the defeat, pointing out the missed opportunity despite the batting depth in the side.
He also lauded
Ravindra Jadeja
for his resilient knock, backed by tailenders
Jasprit Bumrah
and Mohammed Siraj in a tense finish.
India suffered one of their most heartbreaking Test defeats in recent times, going down by 22 runs and falling 1-2 behind in the five-match series. Chasing 193, India were in deep trouble at 82/7 before Jadeja launched a fightback with help from Nitish Kumar Reddy, Bumrah, and Siraj. The last two batters faced a combined 84 deliveries but could only add nine runs.
Siraj was eventually bowled in unfortunate fashion, ending India's spirited chase.

Speaking during a press event of the 2025 season Indian Racing Festival (IRF) Driver Draft, Ganguly admitted he was 'a little bit disappointed' with India's batting, given their performances earlier in the series.
"They should have got this 190, and when you saw Jadeja guts it out and fight and score the runs, the batting quality in this team is absolutely brilliant, and I think they will be more disappointed than I am because it was an opportunity to get 2-1 up in the series against England.

Two more matches to go. I am sure they have left disappointed not getting 190. Especially with the quality of batsmanship there is in the dressing room.

Ganguly added that even a small contribution from the top-order could have made the difference in India's favour.
"Sad from a team's point of view, but Jadeja has been exceptional. He is going to continue to play for India as long as he bats and performs like this. He has been around for a long time.
Almost 80 Test matches and more than 200 one-day games."
"And now you can see if batting, bowling, fielding, you know, he's a special player and his batting has really improved over the years with experience and quality. He was actually a top-order batsmen for Saurashtra in his younger days and then became a left-arm spinner. So he has a special player and is a very important part of this team," he concluded.

During the match, Jadeja also crossed a significant milestone by completing 7,000 international runs.
In 361 appearances for India, he has scored 7,018 runs at an average of 33.41, including four centuries and 39 fifties in 302 innings, with a highest score of 175*.
In Test cricket, Jadeja has scored 3,697 runs in 83 matches at an average of 36.97, including four hundreds and 26 fifties. His top score of 175* came in this format, which remains his most productive with the bat. So far in this series, he has scored 327 runs in six innings at a staggering average of 109.00, with four fifties and a top score of 89. He is currently the fifth-highest run-scorer in the series.

IND-W vs ENG-W 1st ODI Live: How to Watch India Women vs England Women, Streaming Details, Match Time & Squads

Fresh from a landmark T20I series win, Harmanpreet Kaur's Team India returns to the 50-over format as they lock horns with England in the first ODI of a three-match series on Wednesday, July 16, at The Ageas Bowl, Southampton. With the Women's ODI World Cup just two months away on Indian soil, this series carries immense weight for both teams, especially for the visitors who are using it as a final opportunity to fine-tune their playing XI and game strategies. This match isn't just another bilateral fixture — it's a litmus test of India's ODI readiness and depth in overseas conditions. Key Talking Points: India's Momentum and World Cup Focus India's thrilling 3-2 T20I series triumph marked their first-ever series win over England in the shortest format, creating a surge of confidence ahead of the ODIs. But the longer format presents a different challenge — one that requires composure, deeper bench strength, and tactical precision. Harmanpreet Kaur will look to lead from the front while closely monitoring form and fitness across the squad. With only three more ODIs scheduled before the World Cup — a home series against Australia in September — the time for experimentation is narrowing. Return of Pratika Rawal: A Game-Changing Boost at the Top One of the biggest developments ahead of the 1st ODI is the return of Pratika Rawal, the in-form Delhi opener who missed the T20Is. Rawal's formidable partnership with Smriti Mandhana has been a cornerstone of India's recent ODI success. The duo has amassed 968 runs in 11 innings, averaging an astonishing 88, with four 100-run stands to their name. Their ability to blunt the new ball and accelerate in the middle overs makes them India's most dependable opening pair in the 50-over format. India could have been 3-0 up with a bit of luck in England series: Ravi Shastri

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes that, with a little more luck, India could have taken a commanding 3-0 lead in the ongoing five-match Test series against England. According to Shastri, India were well-placed to win both the Edgbaston and Lord's Tests but missed crucial opportunities at key Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy has, so far, been a story of missed opportunities for Team India. Had they capitalised on key moments at Headingley or avoided chasing personal milestones just before lunch on Day 3 at Lord's, they might already have sealed the series 3-0. Even setting aside the "ifs and buts", India have consistently faltered during critical phases-most notably by losing wickets in the final overs before session breaks, repeatedly surrendering momentum to the vs IND, 3rd TEST HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD The third Test at Lord's proved to be a fiercely contested battle, with both teams exchanging blows throughout. Despite a spirited fight from the visitors, it was England who emerged victorious, edging past India in a tense finish to level the speaking on The ICC Review with Sanjana Ganesan, expressed frustration over missed chances and poor decision-making that turned the tide in England's favour."With a little bit of luck, India could have been 3-0 up," Shastri said. "The turning point for me in this Test match was, first of all, Rishabh Pant's dismissal [in the first innings]. Ben Stokes-simply outstanding presence of mind-to hit the right end and pull it off on the stroke of lunch. Because India were in the driver's seat."Pant was cruising on 74 before a moment of brilliance in the field from Ben Stokes caught him short of his ground just before lunch on Day 3, swinging the momentum back to the the second innings, India were 40 for 1 and seemingly in control while chasing a modest target of 193. However, a moment of misjudgement from Karun Nair, who shouldered arms to a straight delivery, opened the door for England's bowlers."That was a huge lapse in concentration," said Shastri. "It turned things around. Because once the ball got older, you saw how solid Siraj, Bumrah and Jadeja were in defence. If the top order had just been a bit tougher and mentally stronger towards the end of Day 4, this game would have been India's."India eventually folded for 170, falling short by just 22 runs despite a late fightback led by Ravindra Jadeja, the ICC's No. 1 ranked Test attack, spearheaded by Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes, orchestrated a dramatic collapse across the final two sessions. Shastri admitted England deserved credit for capitalising on key moments."You have to compliment England," he said. "When the going got tough, they seized the moments. When they saw a crack in the door, they kicked it wide open. There was hardly anything in that surface. If India had lost two wickets fewer the previous day, they would have chased it down."advertisementReflecting on the match, Shastri drew parallels to India's iconic win at Lord's in 2021, when he was head coach."It reminded me of the 2021 Test here," he recalled. "On that occasion, India batted first, similar scorelines, and a collapse in the second innings. Back then, India won. This time, it was England."He also touched on other missed opportunities earlier in the series, including at Headingley and tactical errors at Lord's, such as chasing personal milestones before lunch on Day the setback, Shastri remains optimistic about India's chances in the remainder of the series.- EndsYou May Also Like

'He would have thrived': Australia captain on India's missing player on England tour; on 'hostile' environment at Lord's

Alyssa Healy of Australia poses with the trophy after winning the Women's Ashes Test Match between Australia and England on February 01, 2025 in Australia (Photo by) India were forced to admit defeat at the hands of a relentless England bowling attack on Monday at Lord's. The hosts, charged by their skipper Ben Stokes and the blistering deliveries of Jofra Archer, made sure that India fell short of the 193-run target to take a 2-1 lead in the series. The win for England means that India are now faced with a must-win situation in the 4th Test. Looking back at India's defeat in a game that saw Gautam Gambhir's men play impressive cricket for a significant part of the game, Australia women's team captain Alyssa Healy made a cutting remark on the Indian team. Speaking on the "Willow Talk" podcast alongside Adam Peacock, the skipper reminded India what they've been missing and it was no surprise that Virat Kohli 's name came up. The former Indian skipper and No 3 called time on his red-ball career shortly before the squad was announced for the Test series against England. While his retirement did not take center stage in the first two Tests in the series given India's sublime batting, the defeat in the 3rd, which saw India fail to chase the 193-run target highlighted what the side was missing, according to Healy. Virat Kohli on why did he retire from Test cricket: 'It's time when you...' "I probably shouldn't say this for the sake of the current Indian team, but it made me miss Virat Kohli a little bit, because I would imagine him absolutely thriving in that environment, trying to save a Test match. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Get ₹2Cr life cover@ ₹700 p.m. ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo He would have been absolutely frothing to be a part of that," said Healy. The Test at Lord's birthed several tense and heated moments between the two sides, with sarcastic jibes, passionate celebrations and raging comments taking the spotlight. India skipper Shubman Gill lost his cool to England opener Zak Crawley for his time-wasting tactics, saying "Get some balls, show f---ing balls!" Poll Do you think India can bounce back in the 4th Test against England? Yes, they will win! No, they will lose Gill too, was taken aim at, when Ben Duckett sarcastically said that he has made 600 runs in the series and won't be scoring any more. The India captain had a rather subdued performance with the bat, scoring just 16 and 6 over the two innings. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!
