Downtown Tokyo's famed fireworks festival enthralls 930,000 visitors

TOKYO -- Some 20,000 rounds of fireworks illuminated the evening skies during the Sumida River Fireworks Festival on July 26, enchanting 930,000 spectators gathered around venues in the capital's Taito and Sumida wards.
As the event, its 48th edition, opened around 7 p.m., families with children and others clad in "yukata" summer kimono admired the large fireworks in vivid colors with smartphones in their hands to take snapshots and videos.
Central Tokyo's Chiyoda Ward observed a high of 35.5 degrees Celsius on the day. Many people started to visit the fireworks venues during the day to secure viewing spots, using parasols and folding fans to beat the heat.

Temperatures exceeded 35 C at 271 of the 914 observation points nationwide, with new highs recorded in 39 locations, the agency said, adding the severe heat is expected to continue on Thursday. The previous record of 41.1 C was set in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, in August 2020, and in Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture near Tokyo, in July 2018.

The previous record was 41.1 degrees, set in the eastern city of Kumagaya, Saitama Prefecture, in July 2018, and in the central city of Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, in August 2020. On Wednesday, sunny weather spread from the Tohoku northeastern to Kyushu southwestern regions, sending temperatures in many areas to or above 35 degrees, the threshold for an "extremely hot" day. Some areas recorded temperatures of 40 degrees or higher, making the first day in Japan this year with such temperatures. The highest temperature ever recorded in Japan has been observed in the western prefecture of Hyogo. The Japan Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system pushed up temperatures across the country on Wednesday. Tamba City in Hyogo Prefecture hit 41.2 degrees Celsius, surpassing the record 41.1 degrees marked in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture, in 2018 and in Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, in 2020. Fukuchiyama City in Kyoto Prefecture hit 40.6 degrees, while Nishiwaki City, also in Hyogo Prefecture, marked 40.0 degrees. Heatstroke alerts were issued for 33 of Japan's 47 prefectures on Wednesday. Officials are urging people to remain in a cool environment as much as possible, take in plenty of water and salts, and to rest regularly when working outdoors.
