Amid foreign threats, Carney ‘trying to learn some diplomacy from the King'
Prime Minister Mark Carney says he is 'trying to learn some diplomacy' from King Charles III as Canada faces 'foreign threats.'
The King was in Canada earlier in the week to deliver the Throne speech and open this session of Parliament.
Carney, who was speaking at an event hosted by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities, made an apparent reference to the economic threat Canada is facing from the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
'In the face of foreign threats — no prize for guessing, you know what I'm saying — I'm trying to learn some diplomacy from the King,' Carney said, eliciting some laughs from the crowd.
Carney said the solution to foreign economic threats was 'connecting Canada.'

U.S. appeals court spares Trump's tariffs — for now
On Wednesday, the courts in the United States blocked — then on Thursday, reinstated — Trump's tariff policy, including the fentanyl-related tariffs imposed on Canada and Mexico.
The stay of the order that blocked Trump's tariffs came just hours after Prime Minister Mark Carney addressed the House of Commons and said Canada welcomed the court order against Trump's policy.
During the throne speech, the King spoke about maintaining Canada's sovereignty.
'It is with a deep sense of pride and pleasure that my wife and I join you here today as we witness Canadians coming together in a renewed sense of national pride, unity and hope,' the King said.
'I've always had the greatest admiration for Canada's unique identity, which is recognized across the world for bravery and sacrifice in defence of national values and for the diversity and kindness of Canadians,' the King added.

Musk first dodged a question about his drug use at a bizarre farewell appearance Friday with Trump in the Oval Office in which the Tesla and SpaceX boss sported a noticeable black eye as he formally ended his role as Trump's main cost-cutter at DOGE, which fired tens of thousands of civil servants. News of the injury drew substantial attention as it came right after the Times report on his alleged drug use. The daily recalled erratic behavior such as Musk giving an enthusiastic Nazi-style salute last year. Musk said he got the injury while horsing around with his young son, named X, when he told the child to hit him in the face. 'And he did. Turns out even a five-year-old punching you in the face actually is...' he added, before tailing off. Later Friday, when a reporter asked Trump if he was aware of Musk's 'regular drug use,' Trump responded: 'I wasn't.' 'I think Elon is a fantastic guy,' he added. Musk has previously admitted to taking ketamine, saying he was prescribed it to treat a 'negative frame of mind' and suggesting his use of drugs benefited his work.

White House says it will announce new pick for NASA chief
The White House said Saturday it will announce a replacement candidate to serve as U.S. President Donald Trump's pick to lead NASA, indicating it will withdraw the nomination of tech billionaire Jared Isaacman. 'The Administrator of NASA will help lead humanity into space and execute President Trump's bold mission of planting the American flag on the planet Mars,' White House assistant press secretary Liz Huston said. 'It's essential that the next leader of NASA is in complete alignment with President Trump's America First agenda and a replacement will be announced directly by President Trump soon.' The move comes just days before the Senate was expected to vote on Isaacman's nomination to lead NASA. Isaacman, who has twice traveled to space on private missions and has close ties to SpaceX chief Elon Musk, sent shock waves through the space community when Trump first tapped him for NASA administrator in December, CNN previously reported. Isaacman's appointment was also met with broad support in the space community, which viewed him as a passionate leader, and his spaceflight experience was considered a bonus. Isaacman, the CEO of payments platform company Shift4, was viewed with deep skepticism by Democratic lawmakers concerned he would use his position at NASA to advance Musk's personal interests. The reasons behind Trump's sudden reversal were not clear. During Isaacman's confirmation hearing before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation in April, he signaled he would back an effort to land humans on Mars. The remarks were notable because NASA has been squarely focused on the Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the moon, since Trump's first term. Only since Musk became a close Trump ally in 2024 has the president vocalized an interest in human exploration of Mars, which has been Musk's longtime goal. Isaacman signaled during the April confirmation hearing that he hoped to back both the Artemis program's underlying goals as well as 'prioritize sending American astronauts to Mars.' 'Along the way (to Mars), we will inevitably have the capabilities to return to the Moon and determine the scientific, economic and national security benefits of maintaining a presence on the lunar surface,' Isaacman said. CNN has reached out to Isaacman for comment. NASA referred inquiries to the White House. Musk, who led the Department of Government Efficiency as Trump's 'first buddy,' departed the administration this week. Musk promised to refocus on SpaceX and Starship, the gargantuan rocket system that he hopes will be capable of carrying convoys of humans to Mars. Still in the early stages of development, Starship prototypes have lost control and exploded during three test flights this year, includes one on Tuesday.
