Barcelona and Villarreal are playing out a splendid match at the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys, with the score now standing at 2-2.
Hansi Flick named a strong side for the match despite earlier reports that significant changes would be made, but it mattered not in the opening four minutes as Villarreal took the lead. The goal came from Ayoze Perez, who continued his excellent recent form.

Barcelona rallied after that, and they got level beyond the half hour mark. And it was another player on top of their game that scored: Lamine Yamal. And they took the lead right on half time, with the goal scored by Fermin Lopez.
But only minutes into the second period, Villarreal have notched an equaliser, which has come from Santi Comesana.

FC Barcelona Pays New Signing's Release Clause

FC Barcelona paid top transfer target Joan Garcia's release clause on Friday afternoon in Spain according to SPORT, which cited anonymous sources. The newspaper reported that 'the soap opera is over' in relation to 2024/2025 breakout star Garcia's capture, with the goakkeeper already a new FC Barcelona player save for the signing of official contracts which is are expected to be penned next week. Garcia's $28.8 million (€25 million) release clause was reportedly paid by the player's legal representatives by La Liga on Friday, meaning that its youth team product has officially disassociated himself from Barca's crosstown rivals Espanyol. Once Garcia has returned from holiday, he will head to the Joan Gamper CT to sign his new contract and commit his immediate future with the Blaugrana until June 30, 2031. Simultaneously, Espanyol will deposit the money to La Liga's offices so that it can be added to the Pericos' accounts. Despite the sensitive nature of the transfer which sees Garcia leave Espanyol and join its bitter rival, the operation has thankfully, for all concerned, not become a summer long saga as we often seen with these types of deals. The 24-year-old effecitvely agreed to switch allegiances before he went on holiday, but made sure that the deal could be done before June 30. This will help Espanyol from an economic perspective, as the near $30 million sum can be added to its accounts before the end of the European soccer financial year on June 30 and also help it stay within side the 1:1 rule limit and make new signings this summer. Garcia could have gone for more money had he been called up to Luis de la Fuente's latest squad which beat France in the semifinals but lost to the Nations League final on penalties to Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal. Expected to become Barca's number one shotstopper, however, he is certain to become a part of La Roja's furniture alongside new club teammates such as Lamine Yamal, Pedri and Pau Cubarsi With Garcia's transfer now pretty much confirmed, Marc-Andre ter Stegen's exit out of FC Barcelona could now be accelerated. Previously feigning ignorance about a potential departure, the German could now be surplus to requirements with Garcia around.

Franco Mastantuono completes Real Madrid transfer from River Plate

Real Madrid have completed the signing of Franco Mastantuono from River Plate. The 17-year-old will sign a six-year deal at the Spanish champions, joining the club officially on August 14, before River Plate's Copa Libertadores last-16 tie against Libertad. Mastantuono's contract at River contained a release clause of €45million (£38.5m). A transfer at that fee would represent a club record sale for River, beating the previous record set by Enzo Fernandez's €44m move to Benfica in 2022. Advertisement The Athletic reported on June 4 that Madrid had held talks with the Argentina international's representatives over a potential summer move, while Paris Saint-Germain had also held an interest in his signing. Madrid have been interested in signing Mastantuono since July 2024, with sources with knowledge of the situation, speaking on the condition of anonymity, indicating that his preference would be a move to Madrid if he was to leave River. The 17-year-old Argentinean becomes the third arrival at Madrid this summer, following the arrivals of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen. Mastantuono made his senior debut for River in January 2024, aged 16, becoming the club's third-youngest player ever. Capable of operating as an attacking midfielder or on the right side of a front three, he has gone on to make 61 appearances in total, scoring 10 goals and providing seven assists. The teenager holds dual Italian-Argentinean citizenship and has been capped up to under-20 level by Argentina and was called up to the senior squad for the first time by head coach Lionel Scaloni for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia Both Madrid and River are competing at this summer's Club World Cup in the United States, though they cannot meet until at least the quarter-final stage. Analysis by James Horncastle Mastantuono has already been crowned the new Messi, a crown too heavy for anyone. This week, he came on as a late substitute against Chile, becoming the youngest player to appear in a competitive game for Argentina, taking the record from… Messi. But we should let him be his own person. He is a different kind of 'No 10', ganglier, with the body of a Wimbledon tennis champion. As a 12-year-old, Mastantuono was one of the most promising tennis players in his age group in Argentina. He settled on football instead and rose rapidly at River Plate. Mastantuono made his debut at 16 and became the youngest scorer in River's history 10 days later with a scrappy but memorable goal against Excursionistas in the cup. That he was different became immediately and abundantly clear. Mastantuono curled a free kick onto the bar in the same game. Advertisement He goes into this summer's Club World Cup with seven goal involvements in his last 10 appearances for River. You just hope that Mastantuono's development pathway is clear at Madrid. His former team-mate Claudio Echeverri has barely played for Manchester City. Carlo Ancelotti was criticised for not giving Endrick and Arda Guler enough playing time at Madrid. His compatriot, Nico Paz, had to go to Como. Clubs away from the harshest spotlights, such as Benfica, have tended to be the best landing point for uber-talented South Americans and their phased introduction into European football. But the auction for Mastantuono had been underway for some time and Madrid put themselves firmly at the front of the queue. ()
