Liverpool might have huge Florian Wirtz boost as transfer 'preference' emerges

Yahoo23-05-2025

Bayer Leverkusen attacking midfielder Florian Wirtz would prefer to join Liverpool than sign for Bayern Munich this summer. That is how the Bundesliga champion feels, according to the latest reports.
However, a fee would still need to be agreed between the Reds and Leverkusen before a deal could happen. It has previously been suggested that the Germany international would cost around $169 million (£126 million).
Liverpool.com reported earlier this month that the Reds believed Bayern Munich was the favorite to sign Wirtz. It does hold an interest, though, and Manchester City is thought to have left the race.

According to The Athletic, Wirtz is "on track" to make the move to Merseyside this summer. The 22-year-old is also said to have made a visit to England to search for houses to live in.

Who is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal? Liverpool linked with teenager also wanted by Newcastle

Liverpool is reportedly interested in 19-year-old Rennes center-back Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal, as the club continues to consider its defensive options ahead of next season. While Virgil van Dijk is staying put for another two years, there is uncertainty over Ibrahima Konate's future ahead of the expiration of his contract next year, while Joe Gomez is coming back from hamstring surgery and Jarell Quansah has just experienced a regressive campaign. Advertisement The Reds were interested in Dean Huijsen, but he plumped for Real Madrid, and a link has now emerged with another young defender in Ait Boudlal. Liverpool has already signed one defender in Jeremie Frimpong this summer, while Florian Wirtz could also be on the way. There is also interest in Ait Boudlal from other clubs in France as well as two clubs in Spain. Who is Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal? Given his young age and lack of top-level game time, most soccer fans are unlikely to have heard of him, but he is highly rated. In October last year, Ait Boudlal was named by English newspaper The Guardian as one of world's best 2006-born players. In February, he was sent on loan to French second tier side Amiens for the remainder of the campaign, and went on to make nine appearances, with eight of those coming as starts. Le360 Sport reports that Ait Boudlal is noted for "his ability to pass, his defensive intelligence, and a maturity rare for his age." Reds' transfer window state of play Boudlal is one of several players Liverpool is pursuing ahead of next season, with the club also working on deals for more high-profile targets in Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez. Advertisement Wirtz recently decided that he wanted to join Liverpool ahead of Bayern Munich, and there is belief that a deal could be wrapped up before the summer's first transfer window closes on June 10 — even if it isn't, the window reopens less than a week later and runs until the beginning of September. Talks are also ongoing over Kerkez, who the club has identified as its preferred long-term successor to Andy Robertson, who will turn 32 next season. Robertson was asked about Liverpool's interest in Kerkez ahead of Scotland's friendly with Iceland on Friday and responded: "We're not daft, it looks as if a deal could potentially be done. "But, until that is done, I've not even given that a second thought. I back myself. I've got confidence in my own ability and that drives me forward."

Bayer Leverkusen 'threatened with legal action' as Florian Wirtz to Liverpool takes fresh twist

Liverpool's transfer of Florian Wirtz could result in a legal dispute between Bayer Leverkusen and FC Koln. The Reds are leading the race to sign Wirtz, who has established himself as one of the best young players in Europe after two stellar seasons with Leverkusen. A former Leverkusen chief has even said he knows what's happening with Wirtz's potential move to Anfield. Advertisement While Wirtz's move to Liverpool is not yet confirmed, there is already some conjecture about the figure that Leverkusen will have to pay Koln. Given the 2024 Bundesliga champions are said to be holding out for a fee of €150 million ($171M/£126M), even five percent could be a significant fee. Under FIFA statutes, the player's first club could be entitled to five percent of his next transfer fee due to guidelines surrounding 'training compensation.' That applies to players who left a club between the ages of 12 and 23. Advertisement Koln's president Dr. Werner Wolf said the club is willing to 'fight' to ensure it receives the appropriate amount. "Of course, we are looking into it. We know what we are entitled to and will fight for it," Wolf said on Radio Cologne. "We're looking at this with both eyes. We'll benefit from it. The higher the sum Liverpool is willing to pay, the better for us." Training Compensation is designed to reward clubs that prioritize player development and prevent bigger teams from picking off the best talents for a minor fee. There is conjecture over the exact breakdown of the transfer price and how it is calculated. Wirtz is still expected to complete his move to Liverpool, although momentum in the transfer saga has cooled somewhat in recent days. That may be due to Wirtz's involvement at international level. Advertisement Wirtz nodded when asked in the mixed zone by the Daily Mail's Lewis Steele whether he is looking forward to joining Liverpool. Meanwhile, former Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller has said he expects the transfer to be concluded. 'It's no secret that he'd like to go to Liverpool,' Voller told DAZN. 'I know the clubs are negotiating with each other. '[With] transfers like this [it's] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached. Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through.'
