Inter exams put off by nine days
The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) annual examinations of XI-XII for the year 2025 have been delayed.
The pre-engineering, pre-medical and science general group exams that were to start on April 28 will now commence from May 6 or later.
Due to delay in the first phase of exams, the second phase, which includes Commerce and Arts, will also begin late. Officials have cited multiple reasons for the delay in exams including, unavailability of exam centres, changes in the previous first-year results due to grace marks, and the absence of a chairman at the board, resulting in lack of exam preparations.
A responsible officer of Universities and Boards Department told The Express Tribune that according to the information received from Board of Secondary Education Karachi indicates that matriculation exams will continue in Karachi until May 2. Many of the current exam centers are being used for matric exams and are also designated for the Intermediate exams. Therefore, after the matric exams conclude, these centers will be converted for Intermediate exams. Another reason for the delay is the change in previous first-year results due to grace marks.
It's worth noting that, according to initial decision of Department of Education's Steering Committee, matric exams in Sindh were supposed to begin on March 15 and Intermediate exams on April 8.
However, as the matric exams approached, some private school associations raised concerns that it would not be feasible for students to appeared in exams during the month of Ramazan.
Consequently, the Steering Committee held another meeting and approved the rescheduling of matric exams to April 8 after Eidul Fitr, with Intermediate exams to start the same day.
Now, with further delays, Intermediate students will once again be taking their exams in extreme heat, as has happened in the past. This delay in results will also impact university admissions and the start of the new academic session.

'If Trump can come to China for a visit in the short term, that would be hugely positive.' Chinese markets have lacked clear direction since April 2, when Trump unveiled sweeping reciprocal tariffs, raising fears of a global trade disruption. The blue-chip CSI300 Index has barely budged from the April 2 level, and Hong Kong's benchmark Hang Seng Index gained less than 3% during the period, both lagging the recovery seen among major global markets. Wang said the most significant takeaway from the leaders' exchange was Xi's warning to Trump against provocative actions on Taiwan, which he interpreted as a signal that Beijing is not preparing for a near-term military move. Chinese tech American Depositary Receipts (ADRs) rose just 0.85% in New York overnight following the call, while tech majors listed in Hong Kong fell 0.6%. Onshore non-ferrous metal shares gained 1.1%, and materials stocks listed in Hong Kong jumped 2.4%.

During the more than one-hour-long call, Xi told Trump to back down from trade measures that roiled the global economy and warned him against threatening steps on Taiwan, according to a Chinese government summary. "The US side should take a realistic view of the progress made and withdraw the negative measures imposed on China," the Chinese government said in a statement summarizing Xi's call with Trump published by the state-run Xinhua news agency. "Xi Jinping emphasized that the United States should handle the Taiwan issue prudently." But Trump said on social media that the talks focused primarily on trade led to "a very positive conclusion," announcing further lower-level US-China discussions, and that "there should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products". He later told reporters: "We're in very good shape with China and the trade deal." The leaders also invited each other to visit their respective countries. Zakat Department cancels Eid payouts
Due to a severe 'financial crisis', the District Zakat and Ushr Department on Thursday again failed to distribute Eid gifts to 10 deserving recipients, including orphans and widowed women, in Rawalpindi district on the occasion of Eidul Azha. Earlier, no financial assistance or Eid gifts were distributed during Eidul Fitr either. On Thursday, needy individuals, widows, and other deserving recipients, who visited the Zakat office in hopes of receiving financial aid, were informed that there would be no disbursement, which prompted widespread protest among the affected families. For the past 18 months, no financial aid has been distributed to eligible beneficiaries across Punjab due to the ongoing economic crisis. Prior to Eidul Fitr, there were announcements of Eid gifts worth Rs12,000 per recipient from the 20th to the 25th of Ramazan. However, on the 28th of Ramazan, the beneficiaries were told, "There is no money," and the distribution was canceled. Similarly, this Eidul Azha, an official announcement was made on April 28, stating that Rs24,000 would be given to each deserving individual as part of a one-time Eid gift. The news had brought joy to many needy families, widows, and orphans. However, when a large number of women arrived at the Zakat office to collect the promised aid, they were informed that funds had not been released and that the Eid gifts were canceled. Officials told them the money might be disbursed after Eid, once funds become available. Many women were seen in tears. One widow, Razia Begum, expressed her distress, saying, "They humiliated us on Eidul Fitr too. At that time, we were told we'd receive Rs12,000; now Rs24,000 was promised as annual aid, and once again, we've been turned away. If there's no money, they shouldn't make false promises." Families of patients suffering from leprosy were also denied financial assistance, despite being listed among recipients. Zakat Department employees in Rawalpindi revealed that they themselves have not received their salaries, even though staff in other government departments were paid on May 30 and 31. Without their wages, these employees said they couldn't buy clothes or shoes for their children, and their Eid celebrations were ruined. They have been told salaries might be issued on June 10 or 11. On Thursday, all deserving women and families who came in hopes of receiving financial assistance returned disappointed. The Zakat Department typically provides a monthly subsistence allowance of Rs2,000, paid every three to four months via EasyPaisa. However, due to the ongoing financial crisis across Punjab, this allowance has not been disbursed for the past 18 months. A full year's unpaid aid, amounting to Rs24,000, was supposed to be given as an Eid gift this time, butjust like Eidul FitrEidul Azha passed without any assistance due to unavailability of funds.
