JUI-F refutes reports about decision on PTI alliance

The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) has denied media reports suggesting it has formally ruled out an alliance with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), calling such claims unverified. In a statement issued on Sunday, a spokesperson for JUI-F said that no official announcement has yet been made regarding decisions taken during the party's recently concluded two-day Central General Council meeting. The spokesperson emphasised that 'news reports circulating in the media do not reflect any formal statement from the party.' The clarification comes in response to widespread local media coverage claiming that the JUI-F has decided not to ally with PTI or join any coalition formed at its behest. These reports also suggested the party had resolved to maintain an independent opposition role in parliament and to assess parliamentary matters on a case-by-case basis. The party confirmed that key decisions were made during the meeting, but said they will be officially disclosed in due course. In January, a delegation from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) met with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence, inviting the party to join a proposed grand opposition alliance against the government. Later in March, Maulana Fazlur Rehman stated that the party would make a decision regarding a potential alliance with PTI after Eidul Fitr.

Inter exams put off by nine days

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) annual examinations of XI-XII for the year 2025 have been delayed. The pre-engineering, pre-medical and science general group exams that were to start on April 28 will now commence from May 6 or later. Due to delay in the first phase of exams, the second phase, which includes Commerce and Arts, will also begin late. Officials have cited multiple reasons for the delay in exams including, unavailability of exam centres, changes in the previous first-year results due to grace marks, and the absence of a chairman at the board, resulting in lack of exam preparations. A responsible officer of Universities and Boards Department told The Express Tribune that according to the information received from Board of Secondary Education Karachi indicates that matriculation exams will continue in Karachi until May 2. Many of the current exam centers are being used for matric exams and are also designated for the Intermediate exams. Therefore, after the matric exams conclude, these centers will be converted for Intermediate exams. Another reason for the delay is the change in previous first-year results due to grace marks. It's worth noting that, according to initial decision of Department of Education's Steering Committee, matric exams in Sindh were supposed to begin on March 15 and Intermediate exams on April 8. However, as the matric exams approached, some private school associations raised concerns that it would not be feasible for students to appeared in exams during the month of Ramazan. Consequently, the Steering Committee held another meeting and approved the rescheduling of matric exams to April 8 after Eidul Fitr, with Intermediate exams to start the same day. Now, with further delays, Intermediate students will once again be taking their exams in extreme heat, as has happened in the past. This delay in results will also impact university admissions and the start of the new academic session.

President, PM urge nation to follow Iqbal's teachings

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended their heartfelt greetings to the nation on the eve of Eid ul Fitr. PHOTO: EXPRESS President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have urged the nation to follow the teachings and thoughts of Allama Muhammad Iqbal to make Pakistan a country delivering social and economic justice to all its citizens. In a message on the occasion of the death anniversary of Allama Iqbal on April 21, the president said, "Today we are observing the death anniversary of Poet of the East and Thinker of Pakistan Allama Muhammad Iqbal." "Today we pay tribute to his political and intellectual contributions," he added. He said, "The thoughts, philosophy, and poetry of Allama Iqbal are a beacon of light for us, and we need to follow the message of Iqbal in our individual capacity and national life." Allama Iqbal was not only a poet but also a thinker and reformer who felt the anguish of the downfall of the Islamic Ummah and used his thoughts and verses as a medium to awaken the Ummah, he continued. The president said Iqbal's poetry revolved around the concepts of selfhood, reformation, divine love, freedom of thought, and renaissance of the Ummah. According to Iqbal, the salvation of the Muslim Ummah not only lay in political freedom but was also attainable through intellectual and spiritual awakening, he added. He said the poet philosopher called the Muslims towards knowledge, wisdom, self-confidence, and the message of true religion. The president noted taht the role of Allama Iqbal was not only confined to his thoughts and poetry, but also played a critical role in setting the political direction of Muslims in the sub-continent. He pointed out that Allama Iqbal was an active leader of the All India Muslim League and in his address at Allahabad in 1930 he presented the concept of a separate state for the Muslims of the sub-continent. "His political thinking is reflective of the separate identity of Muslims," he noted. "Today we are faced with numerous social, economic, and intellectual challenges, so we should adopt the teachings of Iqbal as a beacon of light." "Let us pledge that we will follow the teachings and thoughts of Allama Iqbal and will make Pakistan a country where all citizens have equal opportunities of social and economic justice and progress," he added. Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called upon the nation to embrace the principles of Allama Iqbal in individual and collective lives to build Pakistan as a strong, sovereign and developed country. "Today, on his death anniversary, we pay tribute to Pakistan's ideological builder, great thinker and Poet of the East Dr Allama Muhammad Iqbal," the premier said in a statement. Iqbal was not only a poet, but was a farsighted leader who presented the concept of a separate country for the Muslims of the sub-continent, he added. Shehbaz said Iqbal's philosophy of selfhood and his poetry not only provided an ideological basis for the movement of Pakistan but also breathed a new spirit in the Muslims of the Indo-Pakistan sub-continent. The prime minister said Allama Iqbal was the first thinker who, in his address of 1930 in Allahabad, presented a clear concept of a separate state for the Muslims of the sub-continent.

Dumper crashes into 20 vehicles on Lyari Expressway

Listen to article A speeding dumper crashed into nearly 20 vehicles near the Lyari Expressway toll plaza on Monday morning, in what commuters described as a major traffic violation and safety failure. The concrete dumper lost control reportedly due to brake failure, colliding with vehicles waiting in line at the toll booth. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, several cars sustained major damage, and panic spread among commuters at the site. Authorities have yet to release an official statement. Earlier today, the driver of a runaway dumper truck that evaded Karachi traffic police and endangered public safety on Sharea Faisal has surrendered and been arrested, police confirmed. The incident, captured in a widely circulated video, showed a dumper ramming a police vehicle and fleeing the scene. The footage sparked outrage online and prompted a citywide crackdown on dumpers and heavy transport vehicles. According to police, the arrested driver claimed he was being chased by motorcyclists and feared his vehicle would be torched — a response to recent mob violence triggered by road accidents involving heavy vehicles. Previously, a high-speed dumper collided with several motorcyclists near North Karachi Power House, resulting in three individuals being injured. Following the incident, enraged protesters launched severe protests against the dumper, setting fire to five dumpers, one water tanker, and one truck at various locations, Express News reported. According to rescue sources, the injured individuals were immediately transferred to the hospital. Last month a tragic incident occurred near Malir Halt Flyover in Model Colony when a speeding water bowser collided with a motorcycle, claiming the lives of Abdul Qayum and his wife, Zainab, who were expecting their first child after Eidul Fitr. The driver of the truck ran over the motorcycle, dragging it beneath his vehicle and killing Qayum instantly. Zainab, severely injured and lying in a pool of blood, gave birth to their child in the final moments of her life, but the baby also passed away later. Witnesses described the scene as horrifying.
