Fannie Masemola confirms identities of 3 constables found dead in Hennops River
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has confirmed the deaths of three missing police constables -Keamogetswe Buys (30), Boipelo Senoge (20), and Cebekhulu Linda (24) – whose bodies were discovered in the Hennops River in Centurion near the N1 highway on Monday and Tuesday.
National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola, addressed the media at the scene, confirming that the constables, who went missing on Wednesday, 23 April, have been identified, along with two additional bodies, one being an admin clerk from Lyttleton Police Station.
The officers were off duty, travelling from Bloemfontein to their area of deployment in Limpopo in a white VW Polo sedan, which remains unaccounted for.
A high-level multi-agency search effort involving SAPS units, the HAWKS, cybercrime specialists, drone pilots, and air support led investigators from the Grasmere Toll Plaza to Centurion, where the vehicle wreckage and bodies were found.
Among the recovered items were: Pieces of a VW Polo , found along the N1.

Commissioner Masemola said: 'It is with deep sorrow that I confirm that our three members have been found… We had hoped to find them safe, unharmed, and alive. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Our investigation will continue, and we are still searching for the VW Polo.'
Police divers from SAPS and Tshwane, assisted by aerial and cyber-intelligence teams, located the victims following a meticulous examination of evidence and tips. The victims' families have been notified and identified the bodies at the mortuary.
While the cause of the incident remains undetermined, SAPS emphasised that no speculation will be made until the vehicle is recovered and investigations are complete.
Commissioner Masemola extended his condolences, saying: 'We are relieved to provide painful closure to the families and the SAPS family, and we thank all involved in the search operation. Investigations are ongoing.'

But will it make a difference or is just about the DA thinking that they can do it better than the ANC? The DA runs the Western Cape province as well as the City of Cape Town and has within the Government of National Unity, the chairmanship of the police portfolio committee in parliament. The province and city is racked by gang violence, and there is frustration that the national police can't seem to get a handle on it. Michael Jacobs of the Mitchell's Plain United Residents Association (MURA) said that every day in a suburb on the Cape Flats, a life is lost through gang and gun violence. 'These violent incidents sketch a picture of abnormality, fear, and the sheer brutality faced by ordinary residents on the streets. "We need to acknowledge that all levels of government - national, provincial, and municipal - have failed our bullet-ridden and gang-infested communities on the Cape Flats, Atlantis, Paarl, and elsewhere where gangsterism thrives. 'No amount of political theatrics and political spin will take away the fear, blood on our streets, death and open coffins on the Cape Flats of Fear,' Jacobs said. SAPS does not have the manpower, and the City's uniformed staff do not have the power to undertake investigations. Professor Isaac Khambule from the University of Johannesburg, who lectures on political economy, said the DA 's idea smacks of neoliberalism. 'The fact is they say it should be the private sector that is running all of these particular functions, as we've seen in the case of Prasa, because they tried to bring in more private stakeholders. And we've seen the president giving in to some of these demands, such as bringing private players on by Transnet. 'So, at this particular moment, I think we just need to look at one avenue that says, 'yes, it is something that the DA has been pushing for', but since they were swallowed by the GNU, they did not necessarily have space to push for the kind of reforms that they wanted." DA Safety and Security Mayco member JP Smith said the Council's portfolio committee on safety and security passed a motion on June 4 to initiate an intergovernmental dispute. He also touted the city's emergency call centre, handing over 16,000 incidents to SAPS in the past 100 days alone, amid 'ongoing collapse of the national 10111 system'. 'We're stepping in where others are failing, and doing more to keep our residents safe.' Given the DA's majority in the city council, the motion calling for the devolution is likely to pass. However, Khambule has added that the DA's chances of getting the devolution are slim, as it could set a dangerous precedent. 'If they do allow this particular devolution, then it is likely to be more push for the entire Western Cape to be independent. 'It is not just an issue of the ANC not allowing it, but it is also about all the political players within Parliament who are not going to allow this particular devolution to happen, because tomorrow then you are seeding power to certain sub-national structures that may not necessarily be competent in addressing these issues.'

3 drug traffickers intercepted in one week at OR Tambo
JOHANNESBURG - Police have intercepted three drug traffickers at OR Tambo International Airport. The South African Police Service (SAPS) said two of the suspects had ingested drug-filled bullets, while the other suspect had stored 90 kilograms of khat in their luggage. Last week, a Nigerian national was arrested upon arrival from São Paulo en route to Nigeria, after police discovered 70 drug bullets in his system. Four days later, a Brazilian national was handcuffed after she had landed from Sao Paulo with 100 ingested cocaine-filled bullets. Police spokesperson Amanda van Wyk said on the same day, another person was caught with drugs. 'Later the same day, police intercepted a 57-year-old Ethiopian national at the airport's check-in counter before he could board a flight out of the country. A search of the suspect's luggage uncovered over 90 kilograms of khat.' Police added that in the past six months, they have intercepted more than 23 drug traffickers at OR Tambo. The three suspects are set to appear soon at the Kempton Park Magistrates Court on charges of drug trafficking.

R60k reward for third suspect in murder of IFP MP
Gauteng police have issued a reward of R60 000 to anyone with information that will lead to the arrest of an alleged suspect in the murder of Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) deputy chief whip Khethamabala Sithole. Sithole was brutally gunned down at Buyafuthi Hostel in Katlehong last month during a ward meeting. South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson in Gauteng lieutenant colonel Mavela Masondi said they're offering the reward to anyone who come forward with information that can lead to the arrest and successful conviction of Zamani Ngila Ximba is wanted for the murder of IFP deputy chief whip, Khethamabala Sithole, and attempted murder of two other people at Buyafuthi Hostel in Katlehong on the 31 May 2025. Masondo said the suspect is tall, dark in complexion and deemed armed and very dangerous. 'Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspect is urged to call Major General Mbuso Khumalo at 082 556 8642 or Captain Abe Montoedi at 082 461 4794 Crime Stop at 08600 10111 or by using MySAPS App. All received information will be treated as confidential.' Meanwhile, the two suspects who were arrested two days after the murder of the IFP MP have abandoned their bail applications. Khethakuthula Sithole and Nontando Ximba appeared at the Palm Ridge Magistrates Court on Thursday morning, 12 June, for their bail application. The two are expected to return to court on 29 July.
