England beats Sweden on penalties to reach Euro 2025 semifinals after dramatic comeback

Washington Post17-07-2025
ZURICH — Defending champion England beat Sweden on penalties Thursday to reach the semifinals of the Women's European Championship after staging a remarkable late recovery from two goals down to draw 2-2.
The shootout featured some terrible penalties before England triumphed 3-2 with 18-year-old Smilla Holmberg missing the last one after Lucy Bronze had powerfully dispatched hers for the Lionesses.
England had been trailing almost from the start and was 2-0 down with 12 minutes remaining before goals from Bronze and teenage substitute Michelle Agyemang took the match to extra time.
It is the first time in the history of the Women's Euros that a team has fought back from two goals down in a knockout match.
England will face Italy in the semifinal in Geneva on Tuesday.
Sweden had topped its group with maximum points after three wins, including a memorable 4-1 victory over Germany last time out, and it started where it left off in Zurich.
England appeared on the back foot from the off and as they tried to play it out from the back a pass rebounded off Filippa Angeldahl and came to Stina Blackstenius, who teed up a completely unmarked Kosovare Asllani to slot into the bottom left corner.
The goal was timed at 1 minute, 46 seconds.
Sweden was finding space on the right flank and exploited it again to double its lead. Blackstenius raced onto Julia Zigiotti Olme's pass and held off Jess Carter as she surged into the area and calmly dispatched the ball into the far bottom corner.
England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton pulled off fine saves to deny Fridolina Rolfö and Blackstenius and keep England in the game.
Chloe Kelly was brought on in the 78th minute and she had an immediate impact as she whipped in a cross from the left for Bronze to head in at the back post.
And another precise cross two minutes later was nodded down for fellow substitute Agyemang to head in the equalizer.
It was the 19-year-old's second goal for England on her third appearance.
There were few real chances in extra time, meaning that penalties would be needed to separate the sides.
Both Sweden and England had won their last penalty shootouts, in the round of 16 at the 2023 World Cup.
Four players from each team missed their spot kicks before Bronze scored hers and Holmberg blazed over.

Manchester United target James Trafford to join Premier League rivals

Manchester United have missed out on a number of key targets to their Premier League rivals this summer. Heading into the summer transfer window, United saw Liam Delap as their 'priority' target for the striker position. However, the Ipswich Town talisman left Jason Wilcox surprised by picking Chelsea as his next club. Despite enjoying a transformative spell under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP, Viktor Gyokeres decided to join Arsenal. United also made a late attempt to 'hijack' Liverpool's move for Hugo Ekitike, but the Frenchman was already set on Anfield. Manchester City agree Trafford deal Now, Manchester City have struck an agreement to sign a player who was on United's shortlist for the goalkeeping department. In May, The Peoples Person relayed a report claiming the Red Devils could look to sign James Trafford to possibly replace Andre Onana, who frustrated many with his erratic shot-stopping last season. Meanwhile, Trafford has earned plaudits for his sharp reflexes and composure. He kept an incredible 29 clean sheets in the Championship last campaign, helping Burnley record an incredible 100 points. However, City have now acted swiftly to beat United and Newcastle United to the signature of the 22-year-old talent. According to Fabrizio Romano, a deal is in place between City and Burnley, who have agreed to part ways with the Englishman 'under value of £40m buy back clause.' The Sky Blues are expected to pay a £27m fee to the newly-promoted side. Trafford has also agreed to return to his former club, as Pep Guardiola is keen to have him in his squad. He will undergo medical tests early next week. Manchester United discussing goalkeeping signing Earlier today, the Italian journalist shed light on United's goalkeeping hunt as well. Romano has revealed that United approached Aston Villa to explore the possibility of signing Emiliano Martínez on loan. However, Villa rejected their proposal. Figures at United are 'deciding internationally with experienced GK and young GK as options.' The Old Trafford outfit are understood to be monitoring Belgian youngster Senne Lammens. It has been reported earlier that the Royal Antwerp has given the 'green light' to a move to United. Featured image Molly Darlington via Getty Images online polls Follow us on Bluesky: @

Hamilton hit with 'season-long transfer embargo'

Hamilton Academical have been issued with a "season-long transfer embargo" by the SPFL after the League 1 club failed "to settle its tax obligations". Accies were already subject to a ban on registering new players "following remuneration and tax defaults which were determined or admitted during season 2024-25". A 15-point deduction last season led to John Rankin's side finishing bottom of the Championship and automatic relegation. "Hamilton Academical FC admitted to further breaches of SPFL rules by failing to settle its tax obligations to HMRC on three occasions, and for failing to notify the SPFL that it had been in default of its tax obligations to HMRC on each occasion," the SPFL said. The league body added that the embargo will be lifted at the end of the 2025-26 season and have also imposed a £7,500 fine, £5,000 of which is suspended. Hamilton have played three competitive fixtures so far this season, winning one and losing two of their Premier Sports Cup group fixtures. They conclude their Group E campaign at home to Dumbarton on Saturday. Accies open their League 1 programme the following Saturday at home to Montrose. The South Lanarkshire club are playing their home fixtures at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld this season after taking the decision to look for an alternative ground amid a row over stadium ownership and rental at New Douglas Park, where they had played for 24 years. Accies have stated their aim to return to playing in their home town.
