Step forward in plans for new country park

Yahoo20-05-2025
Plans to create a country park as part of a 450-home development in Leicestershire have been submitted.
New housing, a children's play centre, outdoor sports pitches and a local centre were first approved for the Manor Farm scheme, between Market Harborough and Lubenham, in 2015.
Swathes of housing have since been built but developer Davidsons has now applied for permission to build a five-acre country park in place of the promised pitches.
Planning documents submitted to Harborough District Council said "significant retaining structures" would have been needed as the site set aside slopes, while fencing needed for the sports pitches "would not form a good neighbour" for the homes.
The documents add parking for the facilities would put pressure on nearby roads.
Davidsons said the new proposals "make a better contribution" to the Manor Farm development, adding funding would be provided for sports provision "off site".
The plans include surfaced and unsurfaced pathways and "informal areas suitable for a 'kick-about'", said Davidsons.
A planning statement said: "The new proposal for the country park gives somewhere the community can enjoy and use freely in an informal setting."
Harborough District Council will consider the proposal in due course.

Get your kids ready for back-to-school while saving money

Be sustainable! Save your money AND the planet Back-to-school season is an ideal time for everyone, students, teachers, and parents alike, to benefit from a little decluttering. As the new school year approaches, it's easy to get swept up in the back-to-school shopping frenzy, but what if I told you there's a more thoughtful, sustainable way to prepare? This year, let's save ourselves a trip to Target while also saving the planet! The power of your community One of the best ways to approach back-to-school shopping economically and sustainably is through looking for secondhand goods or hand-me-downs within your community. You might find a local swap meet, an online marketplace, or a school community group where items like uniforms, backpacks, and supplies are available at a fraction of the cost of new. If you are looking for an even more affordable option, you can join your local Buy Nothing group on Facebook and find people in your neighborhood who have supplies to spare! Consider trading unused items you have for things you need. For example, if you have extra binders but need a few more folders, see if another parent is willing to swap! This not only saves money but also reduces waste. The back-to-school sustainability Instead of rushing out to buy brand-new everything, take a step back and consider this challenge: Can you find some of the items your kids need in gently used or secondhand condition? This doesn't just apply to clothing but also to school supplies and other essentials! Start by evaluating what you already have from last year. Take stock of unused notebooks, binders, and even gently worn uniforms. You'd be amazed at what can be reused or repurposed. In many cases, perfectly good items are cast aside in favor of new purchases simply because they're not top-of-mind. Fleeting trends We all see it, daily new trends are always popping up, from the latest water bottle to the colorful pop-it pencil pouches that every child seems to want. It's only natural for kids to want what they see their peers using, and it's okay to let kids indulge in a trend or two to keep them excited about the new school year. However, instead of splurging on every trendy item, consider setting a limit. Perhaps choosing just one or two must-have items. This approach allows you to strike a balance between being budget-conscious and letting your child enjoy a touch of newness. By focusing on a few trendy items, you can maintain their enthusiasm without stretching your budget or contributing to excessive waste. Declutter and donate Before you start outsourcing your school needs, take 30 minutes this weekend to declutter. Check closets, drawers, storage bins, and even the backpack you haven't opened since June. You might find a pack of pencils lodged in the back of the closet, or an unused notebook that fell behind the couch at the beginning of last school year. Even if you have already purchased new supplies, decluttering can uncover valuable items that might be perfect for someone else! Remember, what may seem old or outgrown to you could be a treasure to another family. For instance, a child's quickly outgrown uniform could be just what another parent is looking for. Consider donating these items to local schools, charities, or community centers. There are smart ways to donate! This back-to-school season, take the opportunity to declutter and rethink your shopping habits By focusing on gently used or secondhand items, participating in community trades, and reassessing what you already own, you can save money, reduce waste, and support others in the process. Here's to a more sustainable and organized school year! Solve the daily Crossword

Oxford leisure centres offering free week-long trial to some residents

Some Oxfordshire residents are being offered a seven-day free trial at Oxford's leisure centres. The offer applies to Oxford City Council's three leisure centres - Barton Leisure Centre, Leys Pools and Leisure Centre, and Ferry Leisure Centre. It is available for people living in areas that may become part of the proposed Greater Oxford Council, which includes Berinsfield, Botley, Kennington, Kidlington, and Wheatley. Councillor Susan Brown, leader of Oxford City Council, said: "We believe Oxford has the best leisure offer in the region. Councillor Susan Brown, leader of Oxford City Council (Image: Oxford City Council) "There's a huge range of activities available – from gyms and swimming pools in our leisure centres to dance and exercise classes in our community centres. "We're proposing a new council for Oxford and its surrounding villages, and we want residents of those villages to experience Oxford's leisure offer now. "Take advantage of the free seven-day trial – and have your say on the Greater Oxford proposals by filling in the online survey." The trial comes after the government asked councils across England for proposals on simplifying the structure of local government in their regions. Oxford City Council has suggested replacing Oxfordshire's six councils with three new authorities - Greater Oxford Council, Northern Oxfordshire Council, and Ridgeway Council. Greater Oxford Council would cover Oxford and its Green Belt, Northern Oxfordshire Council would cover most of the existing Cherwell and West Oxfordshire districts, and Ridgeway Council would cover most of the existing South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse districts, combined with the existing West Berkshire unitary. The city council says all three councils would have natural geographic and demographic connections, local accountability to residents, and would be viable under the government's plans. Currently, only Oxford residents are eligible for the city council's community services, which include free swimming for under-17s, youth activities through the Oxford Youth Ambition programme, and discounted leisure centre memberships for individuals on qualifying benefits. Under the reorganisation plans, these services could be extended to all Greater Oxford residents, potentially including leisure centres in Berinsfield, Kidlington, and Wheatley. The leisure centres are operated by More Leisure and offer gyms, swimming pools, and a variety of fitness programmes. To take part in the free trial, residents can book online at Oxford City Council has also launched an online survey to gather feedback on the Greater Oxford Council proposals before submitting its final proposal to the government in November. The survey, which takes around 10 minutes to complete, is available on the council's consultation portal and will close on August 12. More information about the Greater Oxford proposals can be found on the dedicated Greater Oxford website.

Post-World War II-locomotive to arrive for heritage railway gala

A post-World War II locomotive will be heading to a historic railway near Swindon next month. Swindon & Cricklade Railway, a volunteer-run heritage site, will be hosting the Railway 200 Gala. It will celebrate 200 years of railway, with an event from September 19 to September 21, with the GWR Large Prairie No. 4144 coming along. According to Didcot Railway, the 4144 was built at Swindon in September 1946 and, having spent time as the Severn Tunnel banker, was withdrawn from Severn Tunnel Junction depot in March 1965.
