Flashback Friday: Adding Advertisements to VHS
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — In this day and age we're used to seeing an ad or two before, during, even after watching our favorite show or movie. In this week's Flashback Friday Mark Ferree takes us back to 1987, for a look at one of the first VHS tapes to contain an advertisement before the flick.
Honoring the brave little one
If you've been waiting for a copy of the movie top gun to hit the video stores you might be surprised to find it has a retail price of just $26.95 instead of the $60 or $70 cost of most recent box office smashes.
But when you pop the video into a machine you'll see one of the reasons why it seems like such a good buy, there's a commercial at the beginning of it.'Great'
What's great is the ad lowers the movie's price to consumers because Pepsi picks up some of the cost. But some customers say getting a commercial with their video is a bit more than they bargained for.
'I'm planning on fast forwarding to 25 if i see the commercial I'll just go a little bit farther till I get the movie.'
'Pepsi bottling company officials say that if the public accepts the idea of having a commercial in top gun that the practice might take off with other advertisers and movie distributors getting into the act.'
And that's just what you can expect to see in the future if the already brisk demand for the movie is any indication of consumer acceptance.
'I don't think it really makes any difference as long as it doesn't interrupt the movie itself.''They're short like in Top Gun I'll watch it anyways.'
Video Movies caught on to begin with because they are convenient and people didn't have to watch commercials in them so it's a bit ironic that customers are willing to pay for a movie with a commercial in it, even if they are paying less.
'The consumer's going to benefit and the movie industries going to benefit, and so is Pepsi, I think everybody wins.' Mark Ferree, KELOLAND News, Yankton.

Butterfly Festival returns to Springfield Botanical Gardens
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Springfield-Greene County Park Board and Friends of the Garden are holding a festival on Saturday, June 14. According to a Springfield-Greene County Park press release, the 16th annual Butterfly Festival is happening from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Springfield Botanical Gardens at Nathanael Greene/Clone Memorial Park in Springfield. Springfield exhibit to showcase Route 66's unique attractions The event includes local vendors, conservation booths, a caterpillar petting zoo, tours of the Roston Native Butterfly House and free admission to the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden, the release says. What to know about SF protests set for this weekend
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Sioux Falls Police are preparing for crowds this weekend. Three events are expected to draw people downtown right around the same time. Whether you are interested in getting involved or you want to avoid the extra traffic, KELOLAND News Intern Kyla Andvik has everything you need to know. Damage in Sibley, IA after near 70 mph winds From celebrations to protests, it's shaping up to a busy Saturday in central Sioux Falls. It all starts at 10 o'clock when the pride parade marches down 8th Street. The Festival of Cultures will begin at 10:30 and will continue until 5:30 at the Levitt at the Falls. Police say if you don't want to join the celebrations, you'll want to avoid the area. 'There could be an impact on traffic if people are driving downtown, the roads are usually marked really well. Find alternate routes, but just to let people know if they're going to be downtown during that time, there may be some delays,' said Sam Clemens, Public Information Officer. You may also want to avoid a stretch of Minnesota Avenue. Protestors are expected to line the road between 6th and 8th streets from 11 am until 2 pm. 'Sounds like the organizers are anticipating quite a few people there. Maybe a thousand people or so. They've been really good about working with us, and we've developed a plan with them,' said Clemens. With so many events in a small area, police will be ready to respond to any problems. 'Most of these things go off without a hitch, and we really don't have any need to, there's really no need for police to be there. But we do have officers that monitor different situations just to make sure that everybody's safe,' said Clemens. In addition the Pride Parade, there will also be a festival at noon at Yankton Trail Park. Saturday's protest coincides with the Army's 250th anniversary parade in Washington D.C.
