U.S. lobster catch drops as crustaceans migrate to colder Canadian waters

CBC28-02-2025
The U.S. lobster industry's catch keeps sliding as fishermen contend with the northward migration of the valuable crustaceans.
The industry is based mostly in Maine, where lobsters are both a cultural signifier and the backbone of the coastal economy. The state's haul of lobsters has declined every year from 2021, when it was nearly 50 million kilograms, to 2023, when it was less than 44 million kilograms.
That decline extended into 2024, when the haul was about 39 million kilograms, according to data released by state regulators on Friday. That is the lowest figure in 15 years.
A series of major storms that damaged waterfront communities and disrupted fisheries was a key factor in the reduced catch, officials said.
Gov. Janet Mills, a Democrat, praised the industry for its perseverance.
"During a year shaped by unprecedented storms and damage to our working waterfronts, Maine's commercial fishermen, aquaculturists, and seafood dealers once again delivered a major economic benefit to our state," she said.
Last year's catch was still historically high, as Maine fishermen never exceeded 36 million kilograms prior to 2009. Hauls in the 2000s were typically between 23 million and 31 million kilograms. Hauls in the mid-2010s were routinely above 54 million kilograms.
The fishery remained economically strong in 2024. Maine fishermen took home more than $528 million at the docks, and that was the highest total since 2021, state officials said. Demand for the product, one of the most expensive seafoods, remained high, and the price per pound was one of the highest on record.
The state is meeting the challenges of climate change head-on, said Patrick Keliher, the commissioner of the Maine Department of Marine Resources.
The governor has secured funding to "help rebuild damaged coastal infrastructure, make it more resilient to the effects of climate change, and protect critically important waterfront access for those who make a living on the water," he said.
But numerous environmental and economic challenges threaten the industry's future. One of the biggest is the decline in the number of baby lobsters settling off New England. The young lobsters have to take shelter and grow to legal size to sustain the future of the fishery.
Scientists have said the lobster population is migrating north to cooler habitats as oceans warm.
The Maine lobster industry is also linked to Canada's seafood industry and could be disrupted by new tariffs. Canadian fishermen harvest the same species of lobster as American fishermen, and much of the processing capacity for the seafood is in Canada.
Tariffs are likely to increase prices on both sides of the border, members of the industry have said. Another major challenge is the possibility of new rules to protect critically endangered North Atlantic right whales, which are vulnerable to entanglement in commercial fishing gear.
Fishing groups have engaged in protracted court cases against the government over stricter fishing rules.
Other states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire, also have lobster fishing industries, but Maine's is by far the largest, and the size of the Maine harvest gives a firm indication of the health of the American lobster industry at large. Maine accounted for about 78 per cent of the country's total lobster haul in 2023.

Polar Max Steel Cutting Launches Construction Phase for Canada's Flagship Polar Max Icebreaker Français

LÉVIS, QC, Aug. 20, 2025 /CNW/ - In a historic milestone for the Canadian shipbuilding industry, Davie today officially began construction of the Polar Max icebreaker, a vessel that, once delivered by 2030, will redefine Canada's Arctic capabilities. Uniquely, Polar Max will be constructed through an innovative industrial collaboration between Canadian-controlled facilities in Helsinki, Finland and Lévis, Canada. Construction on the Polar Max hull will begin at Davie's Helsinki Shipyard, which has built 100% of the complex medium to heavy icebreakers delivered from Finland over the past 25 years 1. The largest proportion of the work on the Polar Max, and delivery of the ship to the Canadian Coast Guard, will be from Davie's home facility in Lévis, which is simultaneously undergoing an $840 million upgrade. This will secure Canada's long-term ability to design and build complex ships for current and future Arctic programs. The hybrid build strategy will accelerate the delivery of the ship by several years ahead of the original schedule. It will also bring forward job creation and the transfer of shipbuilding know-how to Canada, while stimulating Canada's maritime supply chain. The Polar Max sets a new standard for Canadian shipbuilding procurement – a smart approach that will deliver major economic and strategic benefits to Québec and Canada. Notable features: Rapid: Construction will begin just five months after contract signature. Disciplined: Fixed-price contract supports on-time delivery and cost benefits. Business boost: $200 million will be invested in small and medium-sized Canadian businesses throughout the Polar Max supply chain. Québec jobs: The creation of thousands of high-value jobs in Lévis, across the province and throughout Canada's marine industry will be accelerated. New partners: Le Groupe ALMACO, a proudly Canadian subsidiary of ALMACO Group, will deliver a major outfitting contract for Polar Max. This collaboration will create jobs, industrial capability, and a first-in-Canada modular cabin factory in Québec. Knowledge transfer: Workforce and expertise exchange with Helsinki Shipyard will directly strengthen future National Shipbuilding Strategy projects. "Today's steel cutting ceremony is more than the start of construction of one very special ship. It's the start of a new chapter in Canadian Arctic leadership," said James Davies, CEO of Davie. "The Polar Max represents how trusted allies can collaborate to deliver strategically vital projects when they are needed most. We want to thank the governments of Canada and Québec for their vision, and we are determined to deliver this ship on time and on budget." "Davie is uniquely positioned to deliver a ship as advanced and strategically important as the Polar Max," said Alex Vicefield, Chairman and CEO of Inocea, Davie's parent group. "With a global footprint, including our soon-to-be upgraded Lévis facility and the renowned Helsinki Shipyard, we combine the world's best polar shipbuilding expertise with the strength, skill and unique Davie spirit of our Canadian workforce." A Canadian shipbuilding solution with global impact The Polar Max icebreaker is a great example of what can be achieved as part of the Icebreaker Collaboration Effort (ICE Pact) — a trilateral initiative between Canada, Finland, and the United States to design and build Arctic and polar icebreakers— and will be the first polar icebreaker to be built collaboratively between Europe and North America. The Polar Max is a production-ready heavy icebreaker designed to operate in some of the world's harshest conditions. The vessel will support Canada's Arctic sovereignty, critical scientific missions, environmental protection efforts, and maritime security. "In an increasingly complex world, Canada's new government is meeting the moment by rebuilding and reinvesting in the Canadian Coast Guard's fleet of icebreakers. Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy, we are transforming how we deliver critical marine infrastructure and equipment, for the benefit of Canadians for generations to come. Working with partners like Chantier Davie and other industry leaders, we are equipping the Coast Guard with modern vessels and cutting-edge technology that will support our Arctic sovereignty and support a stronger Canadian economy for decades ahead." The Honourable Joël Lightbound Minister of Government Transformation, Public Works and Procurement "Today's construction launch marks a major step in Canada's commitment to reinforcing Arctic sovereignty. The Polar Max project will deliver advanced vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard while boosting domestic shipbuilding expertise and strengthening economic and security ties with Finland and Europe." The Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions "The construction of Canada's new polar icebreaker marks a historic step in strengthening our Arctic presence, protecting our oceans and supporting the communities that depend on them. Through the National Shipbuilding Strategy, we're building the next generation of Canadian Coast Guard vessels, and bringing together Canadian innovation and international expertise." The Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries "The National Shipbuilding Strategy is fostering collaboration to strengthen Canada's Arctic security, equipping the Canadian Coast Guard with new icebreakers and developing a skilled domestic workforce. With construction now underway on the Polar Max icebreaker, the project will progress while developing the skills and expertise of Canadian workers. This international collaboration provides our workers with the opportunity to learn best practices and advanced methods that will strengthen Canada's shipbuilding industry for years to come." The Honourable Stephen Fuhr Secretary of State, Defence Procurement "Davie's leadership in the Polar Max project is a powerful driver of economic growth for Québec. This initiative is creating high value-added jobs, while positioning Québec as a hub in shipbuilding and reflecting the strategic importance we place on the Arctic in the 21st century." Christopher Skeete, Minister for the Economy, Government of Québec. " About Davie Based in Québec, Canada since 1825, Davie is a world-class designer and builder of specialist, mission-critical ships such as icebreakers, ferries and warships for government and commercial customers. Davie became a partner in the Government of Canada's National Shipbuilding Strategy on April 4, 2023. This historic agreement is for the design and construction of the largest and most technologically advanced ice-going ships ever constructed in and for Canada. The initial $8.5 billion package of work includes seven heavy icebreakers and two large hybrid-powered ferries. In November 2023, Davie, part of Group Davie, acquired Finland's Helsinki Shipyard, the world leader in icebreaker design and construction. Find out more at and

Posthase: Renters are spending a scary amount on housing

Canadian renters are spending an ever-growing amount of their paycheques on rent, even though they may qualify for a mortgage. Nationally, they are spending 37.6 per cent of their income on rent, according to analysis from SingleKey Inc., falling just below the 40 per cent 'crisis' level. But Toronto renters have already reached the crisis level by spending 41.1 per cent of their salaries on housing, or an average of $2,899 per month. The average rent in Canada is $2,200 per month, with Vancouver's $3,095 per month rate being the most expensive city for renters. Start your day with a roundup of B.C.-focused news and opinion. A recent Equifax Canada report said non-mortgage holders were twice as likely to miss a credit payment compared to those with a mortgage. 'While the overall delinquency rate appears to be levelling off, the underlying story is far more complex,' Rebecca Oakes, vice-president of advanced analytics at Equifax Canada, said in a release . 'We continue to see a growing divide between mortgage and non-mortgage consumers, and continued financial strain among younger Canadians, who are facing a slower job market and rising costs.' Overall, 1.4 million Canadians missed a credit payment in the second quarter of 2025, while consumer debt climbed to $2.58 trillion, Equifax said. This comes despite rents for condos and apartments falling 3.6 per cent year over year in July, marking the 10th consecutive month where Canada's rents have fallen year over year, according to data. The good news for renters is that it doesn't look like rent will be going up anytime soon. 'The 3.6 per cent year-over-year rent decline in July is greater than the 2.7 per cent decline recorded in June and suggests that rent declines are likely to continue compounding,' said in its report. Nevertheless, asking prices remain 11.1 per cent higher than three years ago, said . Despite the challenges of paying their bills, many renters might still qualify for a mortgage. The average credit score among renters is 694, SingleKey said, which is above the 680 threshold needed for approval at many major banks. Renters in Toronto and Vancouver have credit scores of 729 and 730, respectively, which are significantly above the mortgage approval threshold. Alberta has the lowest provincial credit rating among renters at 681, so the average renter in every province has a credit score needed for mortgage approval. Canada's inflation rate slowed down to 1.7 pr cent in July from 1.9 per cent a month prior, driven by a drop in gasoline prices due to the removal of the federal carbon tax. Overall, gas prices fell 0.7 per cent on a monthly basis. Despite the drop in headline inflation, seven of the main components rose in the month. The consumer price index excluding gasoline remained flat at 2.5 per cent. Core inflation, which the Bank of Canada tends to focus on when making monetary decisions, remained around three per cent.
