Tesla debuts in India — but its too expensive for most residents

New York Post15-07-2025
NEW DELHI — Tesla Inc. opened its first showroom in India on Tuesday, marking the electric vehicle maker's long-anticipated debut in the world's third-biggest automotive market.
Located in the Bandra-Kurla Complex, an upscale business center in the financial capital Mumbai, the showroom will serve as Tesla's flagship retail and experience outlet as the company introduces its EV lineup to Indian customers.
Tesla's entry to India comes after years of delays and policy friction, marking a pivotal expansion in a fast-growing consumer base while global sales are plunging and the company faces challenges in its two core markets, China and the U.S.

Sales of Tesla electric cars fell sharply from April to June as boycotts over Elon Musk's political views continued keeping buyers away.
For India, Tesla's entry signals rising investor confidence and strengthens its move towards clean mobility, although Tesla's higher pricing is likely to make its cars unaffordable for most Indians.
The country's nascent electric vehicle market made up a little more than 2% of total car sales last year. But the government wants to change that and increase the electric vehicle share to 30% by 2030.
Tesla will begin by importing and selling its popular Y model cars in India. The base price would be 6.78 million rupees ($79,089) for the long-range, rear-wheel drive vehicle, according to a presentation by the company during the showroom launch Tuesday. Delivery is expected to start from the third quarter, Tesla officials said.

By comparison, the price tag is around $44,990 in the U.S without a federal tax credit.
Tesla will compete mostly with German luxury carmakers such as BMW and Mercedes Benz Group AG, and not budget Indian players like Tata Motors Ltd. and Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. The luxury car market makes up just about 1% of total vehicle sales
The debut by American EV giant, however, would bring in world class technology to the country, auto analyst Gaurav Vangaal said.

'With deeper local investments, Tesla can accelerate India's EV ecosystem, drive innovation and support the government's goal of higher EV penetration,' said Vangaal, an associate director with S&P Global Mobility.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has wooed Tesla for years for its global brand value and to boost the country's clean energy endeavors.
CEO Elon Musk invited Indians in April 2016 to preorder the upcoming Tesla Model 3. Several customers placed an order but the cars never arrived and the booking amount had to be refunded.

Despite his earlier enthusiasm, in 2019 Musk expressed concern in a post on his social media platform X that import taxes could double prices of Tesla cars, making them 'unaffordable.'
Tesla pressed Indian authorities to cut import taxes on EVs, which were up to 100%, to be able to test the local market. New Delhi, however, wanted Tesla to set up manufacturing facilities so a comprehensive policy could benefit all the players in the sector.
The dynamics changed after Modi and Musk met in the U.S. in February during a state visit by Modi.

Barely a month later, India rolled out a new policy to woo the likes of Tesla, reducing import taxes to 15% from 70% to 100% for EVs priced cheaper than $35,000 as long the automaker committed to building a factory in the country within three years.
Soon after, Musk announced he would visit India in April to meet Modi. It was widely expected he would unveil Tesla's plans to set up manufacturing facilities and commit billions of dollars in investments. But Musk cancelled the visit, citing 'very heavy Tesla obligations,' and travelled to China instead.
Since then, Tesla has conveyed it does not have an immediate interest in manufacturing in India.

U.S. President Donald Trump has said it would be 'unfair' to the U.S. if Tesla builds a factory in India to circumvent that country's tariffs. India and the U.S. are currently negotiating a bilateral trade agreement for greater market access and reducing tariffs on most goods, including automobiles.
Besides bringing Tesla to India, Musk's India ambition has been to launch Starlink's commercial internet services. The plan got a boost recently after the company secured regulatory clearances.
Starlink now needs to secure telecommunications airwaves from the government, which may take at least a couple of months, before the services are formally launched.

Analyst Explains How NVIDIA (NVDA) Can Reach $8 Trillion Market Cap

NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) is one of the . Nigam Arora from The Arora Report said in a recent program on Schwab Network that NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ:NVDA) can hit $8 trillion market cap. Here is how Arora backed his thesis: 'When we were saying aggressive buy Nvidia, it was a $300 million company. Because at that time, people are saying, 'Yeah, maybe AI, maybe not, maybe it's a fad.' And, you know, we were convicted AI is real. And now everybody knows what happened, right? So the next big thing is robotics. Two kind of robots, right? One of the industrial robots that we already see like in Amazon warehouse and so on. They're going to grow a lot, but we're talking about humanoid robots, right? The kind that Elon Musk shows serving drinks and things like that. So it's a future. We really cannot predict the future for sure, but we have to have some imagination, right? So there are some predictions, you know, if you look through some models that human-eye robots could be as big as a $3 trillion market. That's a huge huge market. I mean it could be bigger than cars and you and I will be having our own robots, right. So the question is how do you benefit from it? Tesla is obviously one. But then who's going to provide the brains, the chips, the software and all the infrastructure that is going to take to, you know, not only robots at the edge but also in the data centers to control all that and there's nobody else like Nvidia.' With its latest numbers and stock performance, Nvidia was able to prove the skeptics wrong. In its recently reported quarter, Nvidia's data center computer revenue rose 76% year over year, driven by Blackwell GB200. The company is finding new catalysts for growth. Saudi Arabia's Humain plans to buy more than 200,000 AI GPUs from Nvidia, potentially generating $15 billion in sales. The UAE reportedly has an agreement for up to 500,000 GPUs. Even without China's involvement for now, Nvidia said nearly 100 AI factories are under construction. These factories have hyperscalers deploying 1,000 GB200 NVL72 racks weekly, each with 72,000 Blackwell GPUs. Mar Vista Global Quality Strategy stated the following regarding NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) in its second quarter 2025 investor letter: 'NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) shares rebounded from their calendar Q1 lows as investor concerns over DeepSeek's efficiency gains and U.S. government restrictions on advanced AI semiconductors, such as NVIDIA's H20 family of GPUs, proved overstated. Demand for NVIDIA's next-generation Blackwell platform remains strong, fueled by the growing complexity of large language models and the emergence of reasoning-based applications. As CEO Jensen Huang noted, reasoning tasks can require up to 10 times the compute power of training a conventional large language model. With the AI market still in the early stages of a multi-year infrastructure build-out, NVIDIA is well-positioned to capture significant value as the industry standard for accelerated computing.' While we acknowledge the potential of NVDA as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. Domino's Pizza, (DPZ): 'Be Prepared To Be steamrolled,' Says Jim Cramer

We recently published . Domino's Pizza, Inc. (NASDAQ:DPZ) is one of the stocks Jim Cramer recently discussed. Domino's Pizza, Inc. (NASDAQ:DPZ) is a well-known American pizza chain. The shares have gained 11% year-to-date, helped partly by a 4% jump in July. Domino's Pizza, Inc. (NASDAQ:DPZ)'s stock was helped by a strong earnings report, which saw its US same-store sales jump by 3%. Cramer discussed the firm's partnership with DoorDash: 'I remember when Russell Weiner called me. Russell Weiner's fantastic, the CEO's fantastic. And he said, the street's underestimating this partnership [with DoorDash]. And I said well I'm not gonna underestimate it, cause he's been wanting to go with me the whole lot time. . .But Russell is a hitter. And he said this would happen. People just said, well what does it mean? And the answer it that it means there is another channel. And historically there hasn't been another channel, because the owners, the franchisees, always want to be the only channel. But I just think he's fabulous. That was really good numbers. People who don't like him, be prepared to be steamrolled.' Previously, the CNBC TV host discussed Berkshire Hathaway's stake in Domino's Pizza, Inc. (NASDAQ:DPZ): 'Russell Weiner said do you know that Warren Buffett is now my second largest shareholder? And that's Dominos. And he said I don't speak to him but it is, and I said well I don't know, maybe it's possible that he's not, that he, but I went to Becky Quick, because Becky can ask him. But what an informator if you find out that he is your second-largest shareholder.' Alphabet stock still looking cheap: Opening Bid top takeaway

Sorry, trade deal tracker fans, you'll have to take a back seat this morning for earnings analysis. Tesla (TSLA) is the top trending ticker on Yahoo Finance as the EV maker delivered a weak quarter that everyone on the Street expected. What they didn't expect was a subdued Elon Musk on the earnings call. A little less sizzle on the mic this go around for the prickly gazillionaire! Then we have Alphabet (GOOG, GOOGL), which dropped the mic in its own right on Wednesday afternoon — but for the right reasons: bullish earnings call commentary on cloud demand and how it's monetizing AI in its core search business. The company also lifted its capital expenditure for 2025 to $85 billion, a $10 billion jump from its previous forecast. "What we see here is that AI spend is going absolutely nowhere but up," Gradient Investments analyst Lisa Schreiber said on Opening Bid. "So, it's still very strong, which is a very perfect backdrop for the rest of the hyperscalers, as [their earnings] are coming in over the next couple of weeks, that benefits even more parts of the industries." There are also peripheral reports in focus, such as IBM (IBM) and Chipotle (CMG). IBM had a good quarter. CFO Jim Kavanaugh tells me the company is finding more expense savings and is seeing sizable AI software demand. But the stock is getting hit. Chipotle had an unsavory quarter, as sales surprisingly slowed. That stock is getting shredded. "Markets digested a high-impact slate of earnings marked by extreme single-stock volatility, investors rewarding clean beats paired with credible guidance, punishing any signs of softness," Evercore ISI strategist Julian Emanuel said. For me, the main stock story on Opening Bid today was Alphabet. The numbers were so strong that one has to wonder why the stock didn't gain more — especially considering shares trade at a discounted forward PE ratio relative to the S&P 500 (^GSPC). Zoom in: Alphabet's big quarter Alphabet is trading at only 19.3 times forward earnings on a PE basis (S&P 500 is at 24 times), and the stock goes up just 2% on Thursday morning? Did anyone listen to the earnings call? I did: The company said revenue growth accelerated throughout the business. Cloud business is rocking. The company said it's not losing key AI talent to the giant wallet of Meta (META). The discussion around AI and search seems very bullish. YouTube is crushing it. "AI (beast) mode — it's time to close the valuation gap," KeyBanc analyst Justin Patterson said. Wedbush analyst Dan Ives added, "We continue see a favorable risk/reward for Alphabet and think there is a case for multiple expansion in the coming quarters as investors gain more comfort around the current macro environment, regulatory risk, and the impact of generative AI on the business."
