Uzbekistan coach says historic World Cup spot for 'our entire people'
A 0-0 draw at the United Arab Emirates on Thursday was enough to seal the landmark with a game to go in Asian qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams has given traditional outsiders such as Uzbekistan the chance to break into the top ranks of world football.
"We have come a long way and achieved an important result," their coach Timur Kapadze said, according to the Asian Football Confederation.
"We congratulate our entire people and our president. This victory belongs to all of us.
"Yesterday and today the phone calls have not stopped."
Uzbekistan started competing as an independent nation in the 1990s, following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Backed by state funding, Uzbekistan are one of Asia's fastest-developing footballing nations.

They are ranked 57th in the world.
"Everyone said they would support us and pray for us, the wishes for victory were a great inspiration for us," said Kapadze, who replaced Srecko Katanec as head coach in January.
"My players showed determination in every game, they did their best, and that is why we achieved the result."
Footage shared on social media showed the players, draped in national flags, mobbing Kapadze in the press room after getting the point they needed.
Uzbekistan are second behind also qualified Iran in Group A with five wins, three draws and one defeat.
They play their final qualifier on Tuesday home to Qatar in the capital Tashkent.

Two Scarlet Knights Change Positions in Training Camp
Every training camp, it is not uncommon to see a few players on each college football roster change positions so they can contribute more to the team. This decision to change positions often comes with a lot of influence from coaches as well. This Rutgers football training camp is no different, as two Scarlet Knights have decided to make a change on the depth chart. The first of these players is 6-foot-6, 244-pound Redshirt Freshman Monte Keener, who moved from Tight End to Defensive Line. Keener was a three-star prospect in the 2024 class, who was rated at the No. 91 tight end in the class and the No. 29 prospect in the state of Michigan. He did not see any action during his first season at Rutgers; however, the Rutgers Tight End room was extremely banged up last year and is one of the thinnest positions on the team this year in terms of depth. Players usually do not change positions unless encouraged by the coaching staff to do so. This is likely a case of his specific skills being better suited elsewhere. The other position change came from former high three-star prospect and true freshman Miron Gurman. Gurman made the switch from defensive line to offensive line before his first season at Rutgers. Gurman currently weighs in at 6-foot-6, 282 pounds. Since Gurman hasn't been practicing on the banks that long, Rutgers coaches probably saw his potential as a blocker not long after seeing him practice for the first time and encouraged him to make the switch as soon as possible. Either way, this change likely gives him his best chance to contribute to the team immediately. Rutgers has had success with players changing positions. For example, current Tight End Kenny Fletcher started his college career on the defensive side of the ball. Fletcher was one of Rutgers' most consistent pass catchers before his injury last season. Monday Night Football analyst Troy Aikman thought Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow was done for the night, but he wasn't. Aikman said Bengals backup Jake Browning had entered the game late in the first quarter, but Burrow was back on the field for more action during their NFL preseason game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. "Well Jake Browning, he comes in now," Aikman said during the broadcast. "He takes over. Oh, excuse me. No Burrow, he's back in. I thought I saw that Browning's back in. So, in Monday's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, rookie running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt, aka Bill, scored his first touchdown, a 27-yard run, in the first quarter to give the Commanders a 14-7 lead. First off, here's the touchdown. That was only Croskey-Merritt's second carry of the game. Afterward, he was happy. The fans were delighted. The sideline was happy, specifically Daniels. Daniels and "Bill" share a moment. Croskey-Merritt has been a popular name all summer. That talk picked up on Sunday when it was reported that the Commanders were listening to offers for starting running back Brian Robinson Jr. On Monday, Washington sat Robinson, allowing Croskey-Merritt, Chris Rodriguez Jr. and Jeremy McNichols to carry the ball in the preseason finale.
