Penang woman loses over RM2.3m in ‘love scam' with alleged Singaporean
Penang Acting Police Chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 53-year-old local woman, who works at a factory in Bayan Lepas here, came into contact with the man in February last year.
'According to the victim, she was introduced to the man through her aunt who attended a seminar in Kuala Lumpur with the suspect and had intended to matchmake her with the man, known as Perry Chan, who was said to be residing in Ottawa, Canada.
'Throughout their acquaintance, the victim only communicated with the suspect via WhatsApp, and in March 2024, he told her that he was running an electric grip installation business with the Oman government,' he said in a statement today.
He said the suspect sought the victim's help to transfer funds for the purchase of raw materials for his project through his account, claiming that internet access in Oman was unstable.
Mohd Alwi said the victim then assisted by accessing the man's account and making transfers as instructed by the suspect, before receiving a call informing her that the transfers had failed as they involved different countries.
He said the man then asked the victim to make advance payments for bank service charges, promising to reimburse her.
'From March 28, 2024, to Aug 18, 2024, the victim made 58 transactions into nine different local bank accounts amounting to a total of RM1.936 million.
'In September 2024, the suspect told the victim that he had deposited a cheque worth US$404,500 into a Heritage Asset Bank Oman account to repay her, and she was contacted by the 'bank's customer service officer' in Malaysia, who informed her she needed to make payments to cash the cheque,' he said.
He said from Sept 25, 2024, to July 4 this year, the victim made another 13 transactions into five different local bank accounts involving RM399,407, allegedly as payment for cashing the cheque.
Mohd Alwi said further investigations are underway. — Bernama

PETALING JAYA : Seberang Perai Utara police have launched an investigation into an incident in which a man had hoisted the Jalur Gemilang upside down. District police chief Anuar Abd Rahman said the authorities were investigating the incident for improper use of emblems and names, insulting behaviour, and improper use of network facilities. 'Police have recorded the statements of the complainant as well as the suspect involved in the incident,' he said in a statement. Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the hardware shop owner involved in the gaffe said he was measuring the length of an iron pole while hanging the flag and did not notice that the flag was upside down. The owner said he rectified the mistake immediately after realising it. He apologised for the blunder and lodged a report at the Kepala Batas police station to provide an explanation. It was the sixth flag-related incident since January, and the second case of improper handling of flags this month. On Aug 1, SJKC Chung Hua in Port Dickson apologised for mistakenly flying the Jalur Gemilang upside down.

Headmaster accused of sexually assaulting pupil released on bail
The Year 6 pupil had told his mother he had been sexually assaulted in school on several occasions. PETALING JAYA : A primary school headmaster accused of molesting a 12-year-old male student in the school's restroom and office has been released on bail, Melaka police said tonight. Melaka police chief Dzulkhairi Mukhtar said the suspect was arrested yesterday, the same day the boy's mother lodged a report. 'We are investigating the case for physical sexual assault on a child,' he told FMT. Dzulkhairi also said the suspect cooperated during the investigation. Earlier today, Utusan Malaysia reported that the Year 6 pupil told his mother that he had been sexually assaulted on several occasions. He claimed that the most recent incident took place in the school's bathroom on July 29. Citing a source, Utusan reported that the boy had gone to the bathroom with two classmates. The headmaster entered the bathroom and told one of the boy's classmates to return to class, unaware that the second classmate was in one of the stalls. The suspect allegedly hugged the victim from behind and whispered 'I love you'. He also allegedly forced the victim to say 'I love you, too'. The boy claimed that a similar incident occurred in June when he and a friend were asked to help attach clips to certificates in the headmaster's office. It was alleged that the headmaster had groped the victim in front of his friend.

Police exhume Zara Qairina's body in Sipitang for post-mortem
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 9 — Authorities completed exhuming the late Zara Qairina Mahathir at the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, at 7.15pm today. Her remains were then transported to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital (HQEI) for a post-mortem examination scheduled for tomorrow morning, Sinar Harian reported. The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) forensic unit carried out the work, witnessed by various parties including lawyers Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri representing Zara Qairina's mother, 45-year-old Noraidah Lamat. Hamid told reporters after leaving the cemetery that the process had gone smoothly. Zara Qairina, 13, reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory in Papar on July 16 and was pronounced dead the following day, amid widespread public concern over allegations that her death may have involved school bullying and a cover-up.
