ACC revenues and payouts climbed in 2023-24. So too did legal bills amid FSU, Clemson lawsuits

The Atlantic Coast Conference set league records for revenue and member payouts yet also had a growing legal bill amid since-settled lawsuits from members Clemson and Florida State, according to the league's most recent tax filing.
The 990 tax form covering the 2023-24 season reported the league's revenue increased to about $711.4 million, up slightly from $706.6 million a year earlier. That allowed the ACC to pay an average of nearly $45 million to its 14 football-playing members — Louisville ($46.4 million) and FSU ($46.3 million) had the highest hauls — while Notre Dame made $20.7 million for its partial share as a football independent.
Those figures don't reflect the arrivals of California, Stanford and SMU as new members to push the league to 18 schools for the 2024-25 season. Nor does it include the 'success initiative" championed by commissioner Jim Phillips that went into effect this season for schools to keep more money generated by their own postseason success.
The ACC has also revamped its revenue-distribution plan to factor in TV viewership and reward top-draw schools. That takes effect next year as part of the settlement that ended the threats from the Clemson and FSU cases challenging the league's ability to charge massive exit fees if they tried to join another league.
Phillips has talked about the league's 'aggressive' efforts to generate more revenue amid a growing gap behind the Big Ten and Southeastern conferences, though the league had been ahead of the smaller Big 12 in revenue and payouts in its filings for the previous year.
Notably, the launch of the ESPN-partnered ACC Network in August 2019 has been a boost. The league reported $288.6 million in TV revenue for the 2018-19 season before the network's launch, but that figure reached $487.1 million for 2023-24 — a 68.8% increase.
Yet amid those gains, the league reported more than $12.3 million in legal expenses for 2023-24, a 70.2% jump from the previous year ($7.2 million) coming as FSU filed a December 2023 lawsuit and Clemson followed in March 2024.
The increased legal costs also come amid legal cases reshaping the landscape of college athletics, including the landmark settlement to a $2.8 billion federal class-action antitrust lawsuit filed by athletes against the NCAA and its largest conferences. That settlement is awaiting final approval by a federal judge before terms can go into effect as early as July 1, such as schools sharing more than $20 million annually with athletes.
The ACC reported nearly $19.6 million in legal expenses through its two most recent tax filings, similar to the combined total reported for the previous six years ($20.8 million).
Still, the resolution in the FSU and Clemson cases, along with ESPN in January picking up its option to extend its base-rights ACC media deal through 2035-36, offered a measure of league stability when it came to its annual spring meetings in Florida this week.
'Chaos and the constant wondering of what's happening here or there, I just think that distracts from the business at hand," Phillips said then. "But I feel good about where we're at.'

Florida State baseball forced a winner-takes-all game three after winning a pitchers' duel against Oregon State 3-1 in game two of the NCAA super regional at Goss Stadium. FSU's Jamie Arnold and Oregon State's Ethan Kleinschmit delivered a pair of pitching gems, with both lefties eclipsing 100 pitches. Advertisement After throwing 53 pitches in the first two innings, Arnold settled himself for the Seminoles (42-15) and threw no more than 15 pitches in an inning before being replaced in the seventh inning. He struck out nine batters and retired 12 of the last 14 batters he faced before being replaced by Maison Martinez in the seventh inning with two outs. It was a dominant outing for Arnold, and one that FSU needed in a win-or-go-home scenario. The pairing of Martinez and Peyton Prescott out of the bullpen provided quality relief for the Seminoles. Martinez only faced two batters, but he recorded a three-pitch strikeout on Aiva Arquette in the seventh inning with a runner on base. After a leadoff walk in the eighth, FSU went to Prescott, who came in and threw two consecutive 100 MPH fastballs to help him record a strikeout and an inning-ending double play to keep FSU ahead in the eighth inning. For the Beavers, Kleinschmit delivered six quality innings, allowing one unearned run and striking out 11 while allowing just two hits in his outing. Advertisement Oregon State took an early lead, recording its only run of the night in the first inning on a RBI single from Wilson Weber. Arquette reached on a single, and he promptly stole second, which set him up to score the game's first run on the Weber single. Max Williams tied the game for FSU with his fifth RBI hit of the College World Series, a single that scored Jaxson West, who had reached on an error earlier in the seventh inning. Gage Harrelson's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference for the Seminoles. On a 3-2 pitch with a pair of outs and two runners on, Harrelson lined a single up the middle to score James Hankerson Jr from second base to take a crucial one-run lead. In the bottom of the eighth, FSU loaded the bases with a pair of singles and a two-out walk from Hankerson. West worked a seven-pitch at bat to walk in a run and give FSU a 3-1 lead. Advertisement Prescott remained in the game in the ninth inning, and he struck out the side to close out the win and avoid a repeat of the game one blown lead. Nahir Albright says Keyshawn Davis headbutted him after he beat Davis' brother A disappointing weekend for boxer Keyshawn Davis allegedly turned violent Saturday night outside of the ring. Boxer Nahir Albright told reporters that Davis headbutted him and left a large bump over his right eye. He said the incident took place when Davis and his younger brother, Keon, confronted Albright after Albright beat the oldest of the Davis brothers, Kelvin, by majority decision at the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. The weekend already had soured for Davis, who on Friday weighed in 4.3 pounds more than the maximum for his WBO lightweight world title defense scheduled for Saturday. That led to the cancellation of the bout against Edwin De Los Santos and the WBO title was stripped from him. Then came the alleged incident described by Albright. 'I was in my locker room and celebrated my victory with my team,'' he told reporters in a videotaped interview. '…Keyshawn and his little brother (Keon) came in and they started looking at me and was like, they saying something about his older brother. They was mad and he grabbed me, pushed me back. 'I'm grabbing his head. He moved his head towards my head.'' Then came the headbutt, according to Albright. 'So yeah, that's what happened,'' he said, the incident was not sparked by any exchange of words. '…Their locker room is right next door to mine, so I guess they heard us happy and all that kind of stuff, and they came in and started trouble.'' Of the confrontation, Albright told ESPN, 'Now we've got to settle that'' and said he wants to fight Keyshawn Davis in the ring. Davis beat Albright by unanimous decision in 2023 but the result was turned to a no contest after Davis tested positive for marijuana – a banned substance in Texas, where the fight was held. But late Saturday, the talk centered on controversy outside of the ring. For Davis, instead of being featured in the main event in his hometown of Norfolk, it all went awry. Davis, 26, showed up Saturday at the Scope Arena with his son of less than a year and cheered on his two brothers. Keon, 23, won his fight via a second-round TKO. But Kelvin, 28, got pummeled by Albright, who won the 10-round bout by majority decision. During the altercation, Albright said, his coaches eventually interceded. 'My coaches grabbed (Keyshawn Davis) and then I think security came in and grabbed him,'' Albright said. Later, Albright said, Davis charged after Albright's older brother. 'It just got crazy,'' he added. But Albright said he thinks Kelvin Davis, the brother he beat in the ring Saturday night, was trying to break things up. 'It's a little unfortunate, but nothing could take away the feeling of being a champion tonight,'' he said, referring to the vacant Silver US WBC Jr. Welterweight title he won. 'I ain't going to let nothing ruin my night.'' ESPN reported that the Davis brothers did not comment.

The Seminoles need to win to keep their season alive, while Oregon State can punch their ticket to the CWS with the win. The Beavers won the first game 5-4, walking off the game in the 10th inning. The Seminoles led 4-1 entering the ninth inning, but Joe Charles was unable to close the door. They started the rally with a double before two quick outs had FSU one out away from winning the game. A walk brought the tying run to the plate and a single loaded the bases. A wild pitch got the tying run into scoring position and another single tied the game and forced extra innings. They won the game in the 10th inning after a leadoff double and an infield single put runners at the corners with nobody out. AJ Singer ended the game with a single to center, stunning FSU's fans. The Seminoles are not dead yet, and they are favored in Saturday's game. Ace Jamie Arnold will start for the Seminoles, and they are the home team after being on the road yesterday. Oregon State's Ethan Kleinschmit continued to dominate FSU's lineup, recording two more strikeouts and is up to 11 on the day. FSU has not gotten a hit since the third inning. Oregon State got its first hit since the second inning but Jamie Arnold was unfazed. He got a strikeout and two quick flyouts to end the threat. He has seven strikeouts on the day.
