Baseball: Ohtani hits 34th home run but Dodgers suffer another loss

LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Shohei Ohtani homered for the second consecutive game, but the Los Angeles Dodgers' recent struggles continued with a 6-5 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday.
Ohtani's opposite-field, two-run shot off Jose Quintana, his 34th home run of the season, pushed the home team's lead to 3-0 in the third inning. The Dodgers, however, ended up losing for the 10th time in 12 games.
The two-way Japanese star is now second in the National League home run race behind Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who homered twice in Sunday's 5-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals to push his tally to 35.
Ohtani, batting second for the first time this year with Mookie Betts leading off, went 1-for-3 with the two RBIs and a walk at Dodger Stadium.
The Brewers turned the game around by scoring three runs each in the fourth and sixth innings on their way to sweeping the three-game series.
A pair of run-scoring errors by the Dodgers came after two outs in the fourth, leading to Clayton Kershaw's earlier-than-expected exit from the mound.
The game ended when Betts lined out to center with the bases loaded after the Dodgers scored a run in the ninth.

Baseball: Ohtani's homer streak ends, Imanaga roughed up

BOSTON (Kyodo) -- Los Angeles Dodgers two-way star Shohei Ohtani had his homer streak snapped at five games Friday, while Chicago Cubs pitcher Shota Imanaga had his worst outing of the season. Ohtani went 1-for-4 with a single, a walk and two strikeouts in the Dodgers' 5-2 win over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. His five-game home run streak equals six other players in Dodgers history, most recently Max Muncy in 2019. In Japan, Ohtani homered in five consecutive games in 2016 for the Nippon Ham Fighters. Teoscar Hernandez broke open a one-run game with a two-run homer in the eighth inning. Ohtani's 2023 World Baseball Classic teammate Masataka Yoshida, batting fifth in the Red Sox lineup, was also 1-for-4 in the game. At Rate Field, Imanaga (7-4) gave up seven runs on 12 hits, including three home runs, in three-plus innings in the Cubs' 12-5 loss to the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and made it 5-0 in the second against the left-hander.

Baseball: Darvish roughed up by Cardinals, remains winless in 2025

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (Kyodo) -- San Diego Padres pitcher Yu Darvish remained winless through four starts this season after surrendering eight runs in 3-1/3 innings in a 9-7 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday. Darvish (0-3) gave up a pair of three-run homers, both in the second inning, among the eight hits he allowed at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. The veteran Japanese right-hander's ERA has ballooned to 9.18. The Cardinals turned a 2-1 deficit into a 7-2 lead on second-inning home runs by Brendan Donovan and Willson Contreras and never looked back. Darvish, who missed the first three-plus months of the season with right elbow inflammation, walked two and struck out three. The 38-year-old has won a total of 203 games in his professional career, 110 in Major League Baseball and 93 in Japan. In other action, Los Angeles Angels left-hander Yusei Kikuchi (4-7) gave up three runs in 4-2/3 innings in a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Mariners, the first team of his major league career.
