A 12-year-old boy died on Saturday, March 22, in Akron, Ohio, after he was allegedly told to endure "ice bath" punishments, police said in a criminal complaint, Cleveland.com, KGNS and The Mansfield New Journal.
Anthony McCants, 23, was charged with felony child endangerment in connection with the death of Jadako Taylor, 12, according to the Akron Municipal Court.
Police said McCants was responsible for the safety of Jadako, per court documents, Cleveland.com reports, citing the complaint. Their relationship has not been specified; however, authorities said McCants is 'known to the family,' per KGNS.
Between 5 a.m. and 2 p.m. EST on Saturday, McCants allegedly forced Jadako to take two ice baths, Cleveland.com reports. The first ice bath was 45 minutes, and during the short breaks, Jadako was allegedly forced to do pushups and other physical activities. The second ice bath lasted 30 minutes.
"These incidents were used as corporal punishment," the complaint alleged, per The Mansfield New Journal. After Jadako's second round of "punishment," he began to "vomit and seize.'

Authorities responded to calls of a cardiac arrest around 2:30 p.m. at McCants' home in Akron, Ohio, Summit County Medical Examiner (SCME) said in a press release.
'First responders arrived on scene and discovered a 12-year-old boy unresponsive and not breathing,' per the SCME news release. The first responders administered life-saving measures to Taylor on-site.
Jadako was then taken to Akron Children's Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at 3:45 p.m. At the time of death, Jadako's body temperature was 74 degrees Fahrenheit, per Cleveland.com. Hypothermia is a condition 'that occurs when core body temperature drops below 95 degrees Fahrenheit,' per the Mayo Clinic.

Immigration enforcement officials warn migrants against illegally crossing into country by train

Jun. 11—U.S. Customs and Border Protection has a warning for people looking to illegally get into the United States by train: "It is not worth the risk." Not only is it against the law, officials said, it can lead to injury. The warning came after Border Protection officers assigned to rail operations on Friday arrested a Mexican man allegedly trying to cross into the U.S. in a Union Pacific Railroad car in El Paso, CBP spokesperson Landon Hutchens said in a news release. The man was charged with illegal entry after removal. During a search of a northbound train, officers found the man hiding in a "hollow space at the end of an empty hopper," Hutchens said. After being arrested, officers learned he was previously arrested and deported. "Attempting to enter the United States without inspection via a cargo train is not only illegal, but it is also very dangerous," said Samuel Cleaves, CBP El Paso Field Office assistant director for border security, in a statement. "Aliens attempting to board moving trains sometimes slip and have limbs severed. As temperatures rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the risk of death from heat stroke or dehydration increases. "Also, cargo can shift and injure or trap aliens. Finally, when discovered, the alien will face certain consequences for illegally entering the United States under Title 8 of the U.S. Code. It is not worth the risk." U.S. Customs and Border Protection have arrested 43 people trying to illegally enter the U.S. on trains in fiscal year 2024-25, Hutchens said. In fiscal year 2023-24, he said, 143 people were arrested for the same thing.

CBP: Man charged with illegal entry on train; officials warn of dangers of doing so

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) – A Mexican national man was recently arrested for attempting to enter the U.S. without inspection on a train via the Union Pacific Railway, and the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) El Paso Field Office is warning about the dangers of doing so. CBP said that at 6 p.m. on Friday, June 6, anomalies were observed during a nonintrusive inspection via the vehicle and cargo inspection system on a northbound train. A physical inspection led to the discovery and removal of one undocumented migrant concealed in a hollow space at the end of an empty hopper, CBP said. CBP said the undocumented migrant was taken into custody, and records checks revealed that he had a prior immigration arrest and deportation. He was charged with illegal entry after removal. 'Attempting to enter the United States without inspection via a cargo train is not only illegal, but it is also very dangerous,' CBP El Paso Field Office assistant director for border security, Samuel Cleaves, said. 'Aliens attempting to board moving trains sometimes slip and have limbs severed. As temperatures rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the risk of death from heat stroke or dehydration increases. Also, cargo can shift and injure or trap aliens. Finally, when discovered, the alien will face certain consequences for illegally entering the United States under Title 8 of the U.S. Code. It is not worth the risk.' CBP said they apprehended 143 people attempting to enter the U.S. without inspection in FY2024. So far in FY2025, 43 people have been apprehended trying to make illegal entry on trains. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
