Shedeur Sanders says '99%' of scrutiny during NFL draft came from Deion Sanders critics

Much has been written and said about Shedeur Sanders' draft slide, and many people view Deion Sanders as the main culprit. The former Colorado quarterback and current Cleveland Browns rookie recently spent a morning at a local Cleveland area high school giving life advice and answering the younger generation's questions. Sanders also talked about his draft slide and how, perhaps, his father and his father's fans were the root cause of all the criticism. Advertisement "They don't care about other people's opinion of you," Sanders said during an interview with "They go based off their own — 99% of hatred [directed at me] is toward pops. And then I'm just his son. But [the kids] didn't grow up in an era where they watched him play. It's just the older generation that does it rather than the younger people. Because when I come in person, there's no negativity I see. But it's all over online." A big reason why Sanders is excited to immerse himself in the Cleveland and NFL communities is that he can shape his own narrative, one that does not start with his dad. "That's why I like going [to schools] in person and actually meeting them, and any questions they have, I say, 'Just ask me whatever question you want. Pick any question. No filter, no anything.' That's what they say. And then I just answer whatever they need me to answer." Sanders' draft process was anything but smooth. The three-day wait included him getting passed over multiple times by quarterback-needy teams and a cruel prank call from a college student imitating New Orleans Saints general manager Mickey Loomis. Advertisement Cleveland Browns rookie minicamp finished up earlier this month, and Sanders seems to have moved on from the draft. His sole focus is on winning the four-man quarterback battle in Cleveland. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads, and Instagram. Cleveland's 2025 summer safety plan looks to build on past success

The City of Cleveland is again prioritizing summer safety as we head into Memorial Day weekend. Why it matters: The emphasis on safety is welcomed following a crime-ridden summer in 2023 that included a high-profile mass shooting in the Warehouse District. Last year's inaugural Summer Safety Plan resulted in a 13% reduction in overall crime and a 37% drop in murders, compared to summer 2023. State of play: Mayor Justin Bibb unveiled this year's plan Tuesday alongside police chief Dorothy Todd. The program builds on last year's success and includes combined efforts across city agencies to crack down on housing and building code violations, create engagement programs for seniors and youth, increase street speed table installation and more. The big picture: The city will also continue its Raising Investment in Safety for Everyone initiative (RISE), which includes partnering with other law enforcement groups to patrol downtown and conduct warrant sweeps. RISE also helped the Division of Police add 134 recruits in 2024, its most since 2019. Earlier this week, the Cleveland City Council approved a new contract providing officers a 3% pay raise each year for the next three years. Zoom in: All aspects of the safety plan prioritize neighborhoods with higher crime rates, with more police and regular neighborhood walks to engage residents. "There's a small portion of our city that's responsible for a majority of violent crime," quoted Bibb as saying. "And so, we've identified those hot spots, and we're going to be doing neighborhood walks and have targeted law enforcement in those hot spots."

Bad tires on rental car led to man's deadly crash, Ohio widow says in lawsuit

An Ohio woman is suing after she said her husband died as a result of reckless driving and bad tires on a rental car. The federal lawsuit was filed April 10 against Avis Car Rental, Hutchinson Inc. and Jules Toussaint. McClatchy News reached out to Avis Car Rental and Hutchinson Inc. for comment May 19 but did not immediately hear back. Toussaint was driving a 2023 Dodge Charger in Brighton Township on Jan. 18 at the direction of his employer, Hutchinson Inc., according to the lawsuit. The car had been rented by Avis Car Rental, according to the civil complaint. According to the lawsuit, the car's tires were 'worn with little to no tread' and the tread depth was below the legal limit, 'making it exceptionally dangerous to operate.' This, the lawsuit said, is what led to the death of 69-year-old Robert Bilbrey. Bilbrey was driving a 2005 Toyota Corolla in Brighton Township on Jan. 18. It was raining and the roads were 'wet with a slush buildup on the pavement,' the complaint said. Toussaint was driving 'in a negligent, reckless, and wanton manner,' the lawsuit said. He lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on into Bilbrey's car, according to the complaint. Fire crews had to remove Bilbrey from his vehicle because of the severity of the crash, the lawsuit said. He died from his injuries, the complaint said. Bilbrey was 'a friend to all and helped wherever needed,' according to his obituary. He loved hunting, golfing, watching westerns and being with his family. Toussaint was charged with misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, according to His attorney declined the outlet's request for comment due to the pending case. The complaint said it was a combination of the condition of the car's tires, Hutchinson Inc.'s trust in Avis Car Rental and Toussaint's reckless driving that led to Bilbrey's death. 'We were deeply saddened by this incident, and we extend our sincerest condolences to the family impacted. Given pending litigation, we are unable to provide further comment,' Avis told The lawsuit is asking for over $75,000 in punitive damages and more than $75,000 in compensatory damages, in addition to attorney fees, costs and expenses. Brighton Township is about a 45-mile drive southwest from Cleveland.

Guardians welcome back Corey Kluber as special assistant

May 14 - The Cleveland Guardians named two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber as a special assistant to their pitching staff on Wednesday. Kluber, who spent the majority of his 13-year playing career with Cleveland, officially retired in February 2024. "I think I purposely didn't really seek anything out last year," Kluber said, per "That first year not playing I wanted to kind of see where I was at mentally, see what felt right." Kluber, 39, said he would be flexible with how he would help the pitching staff. "A lot of it is figuring it out as we go," he said. "There's nothing set in stone, but I think it's trying to really find the best ways for me to contribute." Kluber owned a 116-77 record with a 3.44 ERA in 271 career games (260 starts) with the Cleveland franchise (2011-19), Texas Rangers (2020), New York Yankees (2021), Tampa Bay Rays (2022) and Boston Red Sox (2023). The three-time All-Star won two AL Cy Young awards with Cleveland in 2014 and 2017. He also tossed a no-hitter against the Rangers on May 19, 2021. "It's just a great fit. It's a great presence for our young pitchers," said pitching coach Carl Willis, who coached Kluber from 2018-19. "They know what he accomplished in his career, particularly what he accomplished here. He's not that far removed that he can still relate to the player and everything." --Field Level Media
