Guardians welcome back Corey Kluber as special assistant
May 14 - The Cleveland Guardians named two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber as a special assistant to their pitching staff on Wednesday.
Kluber, who spent the majority of his 13-year playing career with Cleveland, officially retired in February 2024.
"I think I purposely didn't really seek anything out last year," Kluber said, per Cleveland.com. "That first year not playing I wanted to kind of see where I was at mentally, see what felt right."
Kluber, 39, said he would be flexible with how he would help the pitching staff.
"A lot of it is figuring it out as we go," he said. "There's nothing set in stone, but I think it's trying to really find the best ways for me to contribute."
Kluber owned a 116-77 record with a 3.44 ERA in 271 career games (260 starts) with the Cleveland franchise (2011-19), Texas Rangers (2020), New York Yankees (2021), Tampa Bay Rays (2022) and Boston Red Sox (2023).
The three-time All-Star won two AL Cy Young awards with Cleveland in 2014 and 2017. He also tossed a no-hitter against the Rangers on May 19, 2021.
"It's just a great fit. It's a great presence for our young pitchers," said pitching coach Carl Willis, who coached Kluber from 2018-19.
"They know what he accomplished in his career, particularly what he accomplished here. He's not that far removed that he can still relate to the player and everything."

June 4 - Jazz Chisholm Jr. snapped a tie by homering on the first pitch of the seventh inning to help Carlos Rodon get his seventh straight victory as the New York Yankees returned from their longest road trip of the season and hung on to beat the Cleveland Guardians 3-2 on Tuesday night. Activated from the injured list Tuesday after missing 28 games with an oblique injury, Chisholm had New York's first hit off Cleveland's Tanner Bibee (4-6) in the fifth before snapping a 1-1 tie in the seventh. Chisholm gave the Yankees the lead when he lifted a fastball into the right field seats for his eighth homer this season and first since April 21 in Cleveland. After Chisholm's 358-foot shot, Volpe gave the Yankees a two-run lead when he lifted a 3-1 sweeper 372 feet into the left field seats. It was Volpe's first home run since May 12 in Seattle. Chisholm and Volpe helped the Yankees win their fifth straight game at home following a 6-3 road trip against the Colorado Rockies, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers. Rodon (8-3) took a shutout into the seventh before allowing Jose Ramirez to single, steal second and score on a base hit by David Fry. Rodon stranded Fry at third and was aided by center fielder Trent Grisham throwing Gabriel Arias out at second trying to stretch a single. Rodon allowed one run on five hits in seven innings. The left-hander struck out eight, walked one and is 7-0 with a 1.27 ERA in his past nine starts. Rodon retired 17 straight before losing the lead in the seventh. He kept the game tied by retiring Bo Naylor on a fly ball with two on. DJ LeMahieu had an RBI single in the fifth after Chisholm got New York's first hit on a bloop single to left. Aaron Judge was 0-for-2 with two walks, lowering his average to .387. Mark Leiter Jr. retired Ramirez with a runner on to end the eighth. Devin Williams allowed an RBI single to pinch hitter Daniel Schneeman before getting Naylor to fly out to secure his sixth save. Bibee allowed three runs on four hits in 6 1/3 innings. June 1 - Gavin Williams allowed just one hit in 6 2/3 innings and Jose Ramirez hit a home run for the second straight game to lift the host Cleveland Guardians to a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Willams (5-3) pitched into the seventh inning for the third time this season. He allowed two unearned runs, walked two and fanned six while throwing 103 pitches. Angels leadoff man Zach Neto had the only hit off Williams when he singled with two outs in the fifth. Emmanuel Clase pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save in 15 attempts. Ramirez hit his 11th home run in the fourth inning to give the Guardians a 2-0 lead. The third baseman has reached base in 29 straight games and has registered at least one hit in 24 of his last 25 games. Cleveland first baseman Carlos Santana extended his hitting streak to 11 with a seventh-inning single. Williams ran into trouble in the seventh when Logan O'Hoppe reached on an error when he hit a shot to short that ripped a hole in Gabriel Arias' glove. Williams then hit Jo Adell with a pitch to put two runners on. Hunter Gaddis replaced Williams and immediately gave up a single to Luis Rengifo to make it 4-1.
