England to miss Stokes as India eye series-levelling win at Oval
Agencies London As India gears up for the final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at the Kennington Oval in London, history isn't exactly on their side. The venue, while iconic in cricketing folklore, hasn't been a happy hunting ground for Team India over the years. In their 15 Test appearances at The Oval, India have managed to win just twice. Six of those encounters have ended in defeats, while seven have been drawn. In short, the Oval has often proven to be a tricky venue for Indian teams of different generations. In the 21st century, India's only win in this period came in 2021. However, that joy has been surrounded by four defeats and two draws. Their last outing at the venue, in 2023, ended in disappointment, with India going down by a massive 209-run margin. Now, heading into the fifth and final Test, India must win to level the series. A draw or a loss would hand England the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, something the visitors would be desperate to avoid after putting up a spirited fight throughout the tour. With the series on the line, and their backs against the wall at a venue that hasn't always been kind, India will need to summon all their resilience, discipline, and belief. The team has shown flashes of brilliance across the series with standout performances from the likes of captain Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Ravindra Jadeja but now, it all comes down to this one match. Speaking about Jasprit Bumrah's availability on eve of the match Gill said, 'We are going to take a decision tomorrow. The wicket looks pretty green, so we will see how it turns out.' So far in the series, Bumrah has been the second-highest wicket-taker and India's top bowler with 14 scalps at an average of over 26, with two five-wicket hauls to his name. Gill also said that the call on Arshdeep, who is already India's top T20I wicket-taker, will be taken later in the evening. 'He is definitely being asked to get ready. Like I said, we are going to make a decision later this evening,' he added. Meanwhile, England captain Ben Stokes has been was ruled out of Test. Stokes misses out at The Oval with a shoulder problem, sustained during the draw at Old Trafford, with a tight turnaround of just four days between Tests. But the all-rounder says he is only expecting to be sidelined for around six or seven weeks. 'It is one of those of weighing up the risk-reward, and the risk was way too high for damaging this any further than it currently is,' said Stokes. Ollie Pope will lead the side in Stokes' absence while Jacob Bethell will bat at number six. There are also three changes to the bowling line-up with quicks Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse, who has played all four Tests so far, also missing out alongside spinner Liam Dawson. Seamers Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue and Jamie Overton are included while Chris Woakes retains his place, meaning he will have played every Test of the series. Teams England XI: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope (captain), Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Smith (wicketkeeper), Chris Woakes, Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton, Josh Tongue. India (from): Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (vc, wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudarshan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav.

Man Utd's Shaw backs Amorim's challenge of ‘toxic' dressing room
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has backed manager Ruben Amorim's uncompromising approach to improve standards in the dressing room, arguing the atmosphere had been 'quite toxic' at times. Amorim took charge at struggling United in November and demanded more commitment from the squad. He also froze out key figures like Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, who were among five players seeking to exit the club in the close season. 'A lot of the time I've been here over the last few years it's been extremely negative,' Shaw, a United player since 2014, said in an interview with the BBC published on Wednesday. 'It can be quite toxic. The environment, it's not healthy at all. … We need an environment that's healthy, that's positive, that's got good energy and happiness. When you have all those things, you feel free, and you express yourself more. 'Ruben brings demands. Mentality is a big thing. He talks a lot about it. … He demands 100 percent and doesn't want anything less. If someone's doing 85 to 90 percent, it's not enough. I think, especially this year, if you're not doing the right things, you won't play.' Amorim was uncompromising as he questioned Rashford's work rate, saying he would rather have the goalkeeper coach on the pitch than half-hearted players. Rashford has joined Barcelona on loan while British media reports have linked Garnacho with a move to Chelsea or Aston Villa. 'The manager's not bothered. He doesn't care who the player is. That's how it should be. Whatever he wants, as players, we have to be delivering, and we are fully behind that,' Shaw said. United, who finished 15th last season and lost the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur, begin their new campaign at home against Arsenal on August 17.

India join World Cup qualifiers Iran and Uzbekistan in CAFA Cup
India have been invited to play in the Central Asian Football Association's (CAFA) Nations Cup next month, the regional football federation has confirmed, alongside FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers Iran and Uzbekistan. The second edition of the tournament – Iran won the inaugural event in 2023 – will run from August 29 to September 8. Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are the host countries. The regional tournament illustrates a significant thaw in diplomatic ties between Central Asian countries after decades of tensions and conflicts since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. 'With one month to go, preparations are in full swing to deliver a tournament aimed at developing football and strengthening international collaboration across the region,' CAFA said. In addition to India, the six members of CAFA – Afghanistan, Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan – will compete. Oman was also invited and will play in the tournament for the second time. Kazakhstan, a vast country in Central Asia and a major regional power, will be notably absent from the tournament as it is a member of UEFA. Uzbekistan's historic qualification last month for the World Cup finals was seen as a symbol of the rapid rise of football in Central Asian countries, traditionally more successful in combat sports than team sports. In recent years, the former Soviet republics of Central Asia have made several notable breakthroughs. All enjoy strong state support, with CAFA headed by the son of Tajik President Emomali Rahmon. The Indian men's national team are currently without a coach, while the Indian Super League (ISL) – India's top domestic competition – is in danger of collapse following a dispute between the federation and its commercial partner. The current turmoil led Sunil Chhetri, India's celebrated veteran striker, to post on X about the fate of the ISL. 'Everybody in the Indian football ecosystem is worried, hurt, scared about the uncertainty we are faced with,' he said.
