Stella Rimington, first woman to lead UK's MI5 dies at 90
Rimington, who led MI5 from 1992 to 1996, was widely believed to be the inspiration behind the female role of M in the James Bond movies, played by UK star Judi Dench.
She was the first director general of the intelligence service who was publicly named, as before Rimington's appointment in 1992, MI5 chiefs were never officially identified or photographed. Publication of her identity caused a press frenzy.
"As the first avowed female head of any intelligence agency in the world, Dame Stella broke through long-standing barriers and was a visible example of the importance of diversity in leadership," the current MI5 director general Ken McCallum said in a statement.
"Her leadership ushered in a new era of openness and transparency about the work MI5 does to keep this country safe, a legacy that continues to this day."
MCallum presented his condolences to Rimington's husband, two daughters, and her whole family after her death on Sunday.
In a statement, her family said: "She died surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath."
Born on May 13, 1935, in the southern London district of South Norwood, Rimington was first employed as a part-time typist at the British embassy in Delhi, having accompanied her diplomat husband to India.
She then joined MI5 in a full-time post in 1969.
Dubbed the "housewife superspy", the agency said Rimington had held various roles including in counter-subversion, counter-espionage and counter-terrorism.
During her time as director general, the agency "underwent far-reaching transformation", the statement said.
It also moved its headquarters and "instituted a policy of greater public openness to demystify the work of MI5, including beginning a programme of releasing MI5 files to The National Archives".
But Rimington triggered controversy when she published her memoirs "Open Secret" in 2001 after her retirement, with some accusing her of treason and MI5 of trying to block the publication.
"It was quite upsetting because suddenly you go from being an insider to being an outsider and that's quite a shock," she told The Guardian daily newspaper at the time.
But she added: "I've never been one to retreat at the first whiff of gunshot."
Another woman, Eliza Manningham-Butler, took up the helm of MI5 between 2002-2007.
And Blaise Metreweli was named in June as the first female head of the UK's overseas spy service MI6.

Lifelong Wolves fans from Dudley care home visit Molineux
TWO lifelong football fans have enjoyed a heart warming return to their beloved team's stadium after decades away. Fred Tennant and Ian Humphries, residents at Broadway Halls care home in Dudley, were given the chance to visit Wolverhampton Wanderers' Molineux Stadium thanks to a wish fulfilled by the Wolves Make a Wish Trust. Scott Bates, activities coordinator at Broadway Halls, described it as 'a perfect day'. The pair, who have lived at the care home for two years, began their visit at the Wolves Museum. Mr Tennant pointed out photos of matches he attended years ago, while Mr Humphries quietly took in the memories. The day became even more special when they met Wolves legends John Richards and Steve Bull. The former players chatted with the fans over tea and sandwiches before leading them out onto the pitch. Mr Tennant and Mr Humphries had their shirts signed and received a Wolves memorabilia gift bag. Mr Humphries said: "This is something I'll remember forever." Mr Tennant agreed. He said: "It's been the most memorable day. "A day I'll never forget. "It is such an amazing feeling to know that such a loving group of people care so much about us that they helped us to live out a dream – and we didn't even have to ask." Danica Chugh, general manager at Broadway Halls, said: "We believe that every moment is worth cherishing. "We want everyone we care for to know how important they are to us here at Broadway Halls. "It is testament to the hard work and dedication of the team here in making our residents' dreams come true. "It was wonderful to see how happy Ian and Fred were – and the staff loved being a part of this as well."

The 18-year-old famous offspring invited the cameras into her life with the fly-on-the-wall documentary, The Princess Diaries, where she has the opportunity to share a more vulnerable side. Wearing her heart on her sleeve in the first episode, which is due to air on August 10, she spoke about the moment her mum apologised to her. Price was married to Hayler from 2013, and they separated in 2018 when it emerged he had cheated on the former glamour model. In the years they were together, they raised their two children — Jett and Bunny — as well as Price's older children — Princess, Junior and Harvey. Looking back on those five years, Princess said they had grown "close" to Hayler. "We loved him," she told the cameras. Price and Hayler's break-up played out very publicly in the newspaper headlines. The Princess Diaries reminded viewers of one of those hard-hitting headlines: Katie Price hit breaking point and attempted suicide after Kieran Hayler split. She spoke to me about this. I realised that I should never, she apologised, I never wanted an apology from her. It was a lot that she acknowledged it: 'you are my kids and I love you and I need to prioritise you'. We are so close now. We do a lot together. I love her. She's my best friend." The Princess Diaries' main star explained Price hadn't dealt with the break up well because she was "heartbroken". "She went through a dark time," she said. "It was hard me for adult-y thing you shouldn't have to go through [as a child]. Everything that happened the press picked up on, they would write stories constantly. I would go into school asking me questions about it cos they'd seen it in the papers. I would get into bed and cry." Princess kept how she was truly feeling from her dad Peter Andre because of her parents' ongoing feud. She said: "I would never go speak to my dad about it. I'd grown up knowing my mum and dad don't like each other." Due to this feud, Price has been banned from filming The Princess Diaries. Princess had to move out of her house (albeit temporarily) so she could live full-time at her dad Andre's home for filming. Although Price was banned from the show, Princess found a way to get her involved by asking her mum to film a voice note for her. The Princess Diaries airs on ITV2 and ITVX on Sunday.

The spotlight will be on the 18-year-old for her new reality series, The Princess Diaries Princess Andre has a close bond with Katie Price but her mum has been barred from appearing on her ITV series, The Princess Diaries. She is the second child of exes Peter Andre, 52, and Price, 47, who famously haven't got on since their headline-grabbing divorce in 2009. Now the aspiring model, 18, is stepping into the spotlight with her own fly-on-the-wall reality series, much like Katie & Peter, which made her parents millionaires. But her famous mum won't be appearing on the ITV show; on the other hand, her dad and her step-mum Emily will be in the background alongside her brother Junior. Although Price doesn't star in the show, Princess has lots to say about her mother whom she loves. The reality star discussed their relationship and how it has changed as she got older. "Me and my mum now, we're so close more like best friends," she said. "I'll tell her anything, she'll tell me anything." Price not appearing on The Princess Diaries is not a result of her own relationship with Price, which Princess has said is ever-changing. "As you get older, you have a different type of bond," Princess said on her mum's Channel 4 series Katie Price: Making Babies, which aired in January this year. "It is not a mummy and daughter bond anymore, it is more of a grown-up bond." As she makes her own way in the spotlight, Princess has said she relies on her mum Price to give her "good advice"; she looks to her mum especially when it comes to the make-up and beauty world. She told OK! magazine in June: "With business stuff, they both know what to look for. Mum has had beauty ranges before so she's been helpful and I'm still hoping to do a lot more brand-work and music, and I trust my dad's opinion on all of that." Changes to the mother-daughter relationship Princess made a few changes to her relationship with her mum for the ITV series, including moving out of her home. Mother-of-five Price said that her oldest daughter was living primarily at her dad's because she was filming. She told The Katie Price Show podcast earlier in July: "Princess was living with me but because she's doing her documentary, and I'm not even allowed to breathe near the documentary, she has been predominantly staying at her dad's while she is filming." However, the former glamour model said this won't be a permanent move and she's expecting her daughter to come back once the cameras have finished filming. The mother-of-five added: "It's only because she has been filming that she has been at Pete's because obviously I'm not allowed anywhere near it. She has only got about two weeks left of filming... I'm that kind of mum where I have to make sure my kids have bedrooms if they want it, you never know do you." Due to filming, Price was also banned from her daughter's 18th birthday party. The famous offspring previously told OK! magazine that she would be celebrating with her mum Price privately instead, suggesting they would have a nice dinner together. Now that Princess is 18 years old, Price would love to take her daughter out on the town. "Officially, Mummy and Princess can go out together. Isn't it?" Price previously said on The Katie Price Show podcast. Princess Andre has admitted she is not into wild parties. She told The Sunday Mirror's Notebook magazine: "I'm not really a big drinker or a big party-goer, but it'll be nice to be able to go to pubs and stuff with my friends."
