Danielle Spencer, Child Star Of ‘What's Happening!!', Dies At 60

Forbes12-08-2025
Danielle Spencer, the former child star best known for her role as the sharp-tongued Dee Thomas on the ABC sitcom What's Happening!!, died August 11, according to a post on Instagram by her friend and co-star Haywood Nelson. The cause of death was not known at press time. Spencer was 60.
'Brilliance! It comes in a great many forms. We all have them, and we all have this family's — Dr. Danielle Spencer (June 24, 1965 – August 11, 2025),' wrote Haywood Nelson. 'Dr. Dee, our brilliant, loving, positive, pragmatic warrior, without fail, has finally found her release from the clutches of this world and a body. We celebrate Danielle Spencer and her contributions as we regret to inform her departure and transition from a long battle with cancer.'
Nelson continued: 'We have lost a daughter, sister, family member, What's Happening!! cast member, veterinarian, animal rights proponent and healer, and cancer heroine. Our Shero. Danielle is loved. She will be missed in this form and forever embraced.'
Born June 24, 1965, in the Bronx, New York, Spencer was cast in 1976 as Dee Thomas, the precocious younger sister on What's Happening!!, a sitcom loosely based on the 1975 film Cooley High. Initially a summer replacement, the series ran for three seasons and was revived in first-run syndication as What's Happening Now!! from 1985 to 1988. Spencer reprised her role as a now college-aged Dee on a recurring basis.
During the second season of the original show, on September 6, 1977, Spencer was involved in a serious car accident that left her in a three-week coma and claimed the life of her stepfather, Tim Pelt. She spent six months recovering.
Spencer later experienced paralysis due to spinal stenosis and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, which she overcame after chemotherapy. In 2018, she underwent emergency brain surgery for a bleeding hematoma resulting from the 1977 car accident.
After What's Happening!! ended, Spencer and her mother spent time living in Africa before she enrolled at the University of California, Davis, to pursue veterinary medicine — a career path encouraged by her late stepfather. Following the cancellation of What's Happening Now!!, she attended Tuskegee University Veterinary School in Alabama and became a veterinarian in 1996.
In addition to her veterinary career, Spencer shared her story in the memoir Through the Fire: Journal of a Child Star.

'South Park' targets federal takeover of Washington, DC, police in latest episode

NEW YORK (AP) — 'South Park' is continuing its cartoon assault on the Trump administration, with an episode on Wednesday that addresses the federal takeover of Washington, D.C.'s police department. A 20-second promo of this week's episode released by Comedy Central depicts the show's recurring character 'Towelie' — an anthropomorphic towel — riding in a bus past the U.S. Supreme Court building and White House, where armed troops are patrolling. A tank rolls by in front of the White House. 'This seems like a perfect place for a towel,' the character says upon disembarking the bus. 'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone recently signed a reported $1.5 billion, five-year deal with Paramount for new episodes and streaming rights to their series, which began its 27th season this summer. Their second episode of the season depicted Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem shooting puppies, a reference to a story from the former South Dakota governor's biography where she said she killed the family dog because of its behavioral issues. Noem is also depicted being trailed by a team of beauticians having to reattach her face. 'It's so easy to make fun of women for how they look,' Noem told Glenn Beck in response to the episode. The season premiere mocked President Donald Trump's body in a raunchy manner and depicted him sharing a bed with Satan. The White House has dismissed 'South Park' as a fourth-rate, no-longer-relevant show. But it has been attracting attention; Comedy Central said the Noem episode had the highest audience share in the show's history, a reference to the percentage of people with televisions on watching the cartoon. ___

Fever star Sophie Cunningham hit with third WNBA fine after Paige Bueckers comment on her podcast

It's "third time's the charm" for Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham, as she revealed the WNBA fined her again for criticizing officiating on her podcast. Cunningham, who was ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 WNBA season after tearing her MCL in Sunday's game against the Connecticut Sun, told her "Show Me Something" co-host, reality star and Complex journalist West Wilson, that she got fined for comments regarding Dallas Wings star guard Paige Bueckers. "I love Paige to death, don't get me wrong," Cunningham said in her podcast episode from Aug. 13. "I think she's a hell of a player and would love to play with her one day, but those refs were giving her every frickin' whistle last night. Like you literally couldn't touch her. That's just so annoying to me." The WNBA fined Cunningham an undisclosed amount. "I'm officially 3-for-3 on being fined by the WNBA," Cunningham said in the most recent podcast episode. "For this? For the pod?" Wilson questioned. "They didn't like my comment on Paige Bueckers…I didn't even say anything bad," Cunningham responded. Cunningham was first hit with a fine worth $500 from the league for posting a TikTok where she captioned it "some officials" with lip-synced words from Sabrina Carpenter's hit song, "Manchild," which were, "Stupid. Or is it slow? Maybe it's useless." Then, after comments about officiating in the podcast's debut episode, Cunningham was slapped with a $1,500 fine. "If I was a ref, I know I would mess up all the time. Like, I'm not saying that your job is easy, but when it is a simple call right in front of your face multiple times, what are you doing? What are you doing?" Cunningham began in the debut episode. "They're just so inconsistent, like that's one thing. If you're on the other team, and you're going to be fouling the s--- out of me, cool. But let me do it to you… I think players across the league, and new fans across the country are like, 'What is going on with the refs?' And I'm like, 'I don't know.' And you fining me $500 is not going to do s---." Cunningham was in the midst of her first season with the Fever. Her popularity skyrocketed early this season in a game against the Sun where she protected Clark after the superstar guard was poked in the eye. Cunningham was ejected from the game for a scuffle underneath the Sun's hoop, and from there, her social media presence has grown exponentially. Cunningham was playing on a one-year, $100,000 contract with the Fever, rendering her a free agent at the end of this season. She finished the season averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game over 30 contests (13 starts).
