Goa stampede: ‘Some people spreading rumours…,' here's what North Goa SP said about accident
The stampede occurred on Friday night during the annual Lairai Devi Jatra at the Shirgao temple in Goa's Shirgao village, a festival renowned for its traditional fire-walking rituals. The tragic incident led to six fatalities and left more than 50 people injured.
Speaking on the Shirgao stampede, North Goa SP Akshat Kaushal said that the police are still trying to determine the exact cause of the incident.
The biggest challenge for us was to peacefully vacate more than 50,000 people.
He told ANI, 'However, we have been told that the stampede might have happened due to some people spreading rumours... The biggest challenge for us was to peacefully vacate more than 50,000 people who were inside the temple for the (Larai) Zatra. Around 400 police personnel were deployed here for the Zatra. This is the first time something like this has happened on this occasion.'
Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant announced an inquiry into the Sree Lairai Devi Temple stampede, PTI reported. Sawant also visited the Goa Medical College (GMC), where some injured persons in the Shirgao stampede are being treated.
Speaking about the incident, Pramod Sawant said, "Six people died in the stampede, and over 50 people have been injured. After getting the information, I went to the spot. The injured are being treated in the hospital...More than 50,000 people participate in the Jatra every year. This is an unfortunate incident. PM Modi called me and enquired about the incident. He also assured to provide assistance from the Centre.

‘Begin by creating shelters for 5,000 dogs': SC's Aug 11 full order now out
The Supreme Court has, in its August 11 order to capture and put in shelters all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR, called it 'a progressive exercise' — acknowledging that shelters could take time to be built and increased — and told the authorities to 'begin by creating dog shelter(s) for say 5,000 dogs in the next six-eight weeks'. Under no circumstances should the dogs be released back onto the streets, says SC's August 11 order.(PTI) The matter has since been referred to a larger bench of three judges for a hearing on August 14. Animals rights activists and several other sections questioned the August 11 order, arguing that it wasn't rooted in science even though the stray-dog issue needed to be addressed. Under no circumstances should the dogs be released back onto the streets after being 'captured, sterilized, dewormed and immunized as required by Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023', as per the detailed order uploaded on the SC website on Wednesday. Ordering immediate start of both exercises — that of rounding up the dogs, and the creation of infrastructure such as shelters and medical facilities — the order says these 'shall be undertaken simultaneously'. 'We do not want to hear about even a semblance of lethargy from the concerned authorities on the pre-text of awaiting the creation of shelters / pounds,' the order, however, adds. It warns authorities of strict action otherwise. 'The dog shelters/pounds should have sufficient personnel to sterilize, deworm and immunize stray dogs and also for looking after the stray dogs who would be detained,' it adds. The two-judge bench took suo motu notice of the stray dog issue — citing a rise in cases of dog bites — and passed orders covering "all localities of Delhi, Ghaziabad, Noida, Faridabad, Gurugram as well as areas on the outskirts".

The recent Supreme Court decision is like a door closing on the voiceless and defenceless of our society. I wish the safety and sanctity of life was at the heart of the judgement.' Calling for a more balanced response, she added, 'I wish a more nuanced and calibrated approach had been taken towards the systemic flaws that are at the root of the so-called dog menace. In silencing those who cannot protect themselves, we risk losing something essential within ourselves.' She urged the government to reconsider the order, saying, 'This need of experience over sympathy has caused tremendous harm. I hope and pray the Supreme Court will try and find a fine balance embedded in justice.' CJI agreed to review court's order Responding to the widespread criticism, Chief Justice Gavai agreed on 13 August, to review the Court's order. Reacting to this development, actor Randeep Hooda welcomed the reconsideration, tweeting: "So glad to hear that the Honourable CJI has agreed to look into the ruling about stray dogs in NCR. Passing a law and implementing a law should be, firstly, humane — and secondly, the infrastructure and sensitivity need to be taken care of." He acknowledged the complexity of the issue: "Are stray dogs our collective community humanitarian responsibility? Yes. Can they be a menace? Yes. I love animals — but will I be able to justify it to a family that has lost a loved one to rabies or serious injuries? No." Randeep cautioned against mass impounding, saying it's neither a viable nor humane solution.
