2025 NBA Draft: Cooper Flagg headlines rookies who could matter for fantasy basketball this season
I can't say enough how much I like Flagg's opportunity to contribute immediately. With his defense, athleticism and scoring efficiency, he projects as a multi-category fantasy asset. The 3s are the question mark, but there's a sneaky playmaking upside, too.

I'm warming up to targeting him around the sixth or seventh rounds of drafts next season.
Landing with the Hornets is a gift and a curse. It's a losing franchise with exciting players who can't stay healthy. That said, they need a two-guard, and Edgecombe is a bucket and a disruptive defender. He also flies, so sharing a backcourt with LaMelo Ball has its perks.
🎙️ VJ Edgecombe: "Most rookies, they be like, can't guard... I want to change that dynamic, change that for sure. Just want to go out there and guard, and impact the floor.""I know Charlotte Hornets. I know about the team, the roster, everything that's going on over there." pic.twitter.com/yMWXzMZkQr

Edgecombe reminds me of Victor Oladipo. He could be one of the top scorers of his class with the bonus of some steals. If he ends up in Charlotte, he may become a fantasy option outside the top 100 picks.
If Knueppel falls to the Jazz, feel good about it. There's more to his game than being an elite motion shooter. He is the modern Mr. Fundamental — a smart hooper who can facilitate, cut and make the right basketball play more often than not.
Kon Knueppel was ELITE for the Blue Devils tonight 🙌😈 21 PTS | 5 REB | 5 AST | 3 STLHe helped lead @DukeMBB to a #MFinalFour berth 👏 #MarchMadness pic.twitter.com/ZilPoKBlY2

The Jazz need that after being in the bottom 10 in offensive rating and having the highest turnover rate in the league. He'd already be their best shooter as a rookie, but it will come down to his defense to get consistent minutes. I like the Chris Mullin comps.
The freshman out of Texas fills a couple of needs for the Wizards: shooting and playmaking.
Tre Johnson — P&R playmaking + scoring tapeAn elite multi-level shotmaking/scoring talent that leverages his gravity with high-level spatial awareness and understanding of screens. A much better passer than given credit for (1.5 AST/TO + 16.5% AST).#6 on my '25 board. https://t.co/YmUJXKmt1N pic.twitter.com/d2uXvGFujb

I'm not sold on the defense yet, but I like the guards Washington's assembled, with Johnson slotting in as arguably one of their best 3-point shooters. There's a path for minutes, but he's more of a dynasty option than a target in redraft leagues in this scenario.
Queen's outlook would take a massive leap in Chicago if the Bulls finally move Nikola Vučević. I understand the knocks on his poor combine, defense, lack of explosiveness and questionable outside shooting. However, he's one of only a few offensive hubs available at his size (6-foot-10 and 246 pounds).
Why Derik Queen is a top 5 prospect...1. True 1of1 on ball craft as a 5 - handle, vision, magnet hands, touch, intuition.2. The concerns are fixable + have already seen flashes of improving. If you overthink fixable concerns, you will get burned by the skill set.🐢 pic.twitter.com/zy0LHg6DRI

He's got nice touch and is a willing playmaker who could put up numbers in limited minutes if he cracks the rotation.
Should Clint Capela bounce, Newell's rim-running and relentless motor would be worthy additions to a thin Atlanta frontcourt. Jalen Johnson's been banged up the past two seasons, so getting another talented big man with the quickness to defend on the perimeter is a strong fit with their growing, scrappy identity.
I love this defense from Asa Newell. This is the type of stuff we saw from him more at Montverde. Even if he doesn't end up as more of a 5, I think he has all the tools to be a really versatile and switchable defender. pic.twitter.com/PWJRSMgKcT

Being the recipient of Trae Young's lobs with shot-blocking and rebounding upside, Newell could be one of those late-round bigs that make an impact in fantasy on a per-minute basis.
If the Wolves can't afford to keep Nickeil Alexander-Walker, selecting Coward would be one of my favorite draft night moves.
Cedric Coward is EASILY one of the biggest winners of the combineHe's shot well in drills, has a freaky 7'2' wing span at 6'5' and tested great athletically too with a 38.5' max vertHe's a career 38.6% 3PT shooter in college and there's a big chance he stays in the draft now pic.twitter.com/3t9hqfcLd7
— Point Made Basketball (@pointmadebball) May 13, 2025
He's a late bloomer with a damn-near-perfect shot and a large wingspan who prides himself on the defensive end. It may sound like gas, but he gives me Kawhi Leonard vibes.
The backcourt in Los Angeles is aging, and injuries are known saboteurs. Pettiford is the ideal match as a Brandon Jennings-lite with the speed, scoring, hops and creation that would ignite the team's bench. Most rookies with his profile tend to be inefficient, but he can still light it up in a reserve role. It's too early for consideration in redraft leagues, but dynasty managers should take notice.

Doncic: 'I decided pretty quick' to stay with the Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers made arguably the biggest acquisition since perhaps the Louisiana Purchase when they landed Luka Doncic six months ago in a gargantuan trade with the Dallas Mavericks. But almost instantly came the question of how long he would remain with them. According to the contract he was playing on at the time, he was able to opt out in the summer of 2026 and become a free agent. But on Saturday, he agreed to a three-year contract extension, which means he will stay put for the foreseeable future. At his press conference on Saturday, Doncic said that after coming to L.A., he "decided pretty quick" that he wanted to stay with the Purple and Gold. Via Silver Screen and Roll: 'I was kind of thinking,' Dončić said, 'obviously not in the moment when I got traded but later on when I started playing, that I wanted to be here. This is an amazing organization. We have trust in each other. So, honestly, I decided pretty quick.' Lakers fans showered the 26-year-old Slovenian with nothing but love from the moment he arrived. He has now reciprocated, especially by undergoing an impressive physical transformation that has made him leaner and fitter this summer. Now, all that's left for him is to maintain his individual excellence and bring multiple NBA championships to the storied franchise. Damian Lillard announces he's taking over as general manager of Weber State basketball
Damian Lillard is staying true to his roots this offseason. Less than two weeks after the team he spent his first 11 NBA seasons with officially welcomed him home with an introductory press conference, Lillard announced he's going to take over as the general manager of his college alma mater. The Portland Trail Blazers star broke the news Saturday in Ogden, Utah, where he hosted the Weber State Basketball Alumni Classic for the sixth time. "It's something that, my relationship with coach [Eric] Duft and this program means a lot to me, and seeing the success of the program means a lot to me," Lillard said at the event, per the Standard-Examiner. "I feel like I can do a lot to help the program be successful, to help the players even individually continue to grow their careers past college, that's something that I'm passionate about." Lillard played for Weber State from 2008-12. During his senior season, he averaged 24.5 points per game while shooting 44.6% from the field, including 40.9% from 3. in the process, he won Big Sky Player of the Year for the second time and became a third-team All-American. The Blazers selected him No. 6 overall in the 2012 NBA Draft. Lillard immediately made an impact, collecting NBA Rookie of the Year honors in 2013. He's a nine-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA 3-Point Contest champion, and he has five top-10 MVP finishes. Lillard signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Blazers after the Milwaukee Bucks waived him at the start of free agency. Lillard, 35, is still owed $113 million from the Bucks, whom he wasn't able to win a championship with in his two seasons in Milwaukee. Lillard ruptured his left Achilles in Game 4 of the team's first-round series against the Indiana Pacers. Lillard isn't expected to play during the 2025-26 season. He'll likely serve as a quasi-assistant coach for the Blazers while he recovers. But now he has another non-playing role. In a news release, Weber State said Lillard 'will work closely with the coaching staff and athletic department leadership to provide insight, mentorship, and guidance, using his experience at the collegiate and professional levels to elevate the program.' In 2015, Lillard finished his degree at Weber State. His No. 1 jersey was retired two years later. Four years after that, in 2021, he was inducted into the WSU Athletics Hall of Fame. 'College athletics is constantly evolving, and building a strong program requires time, trust, and commitment," Lillard said in that same news release. "I believe in what this program represents and the culture that continues to grow at Weber State. The support of our community is vital to the program's success, and I am committed to playing a greater role in that effort. He added: "This opportunity allows me to be even more involved in shaping the future of Weber State basketball.'

Report: Nets sign F Fanbo Zeng, formerly of the NBA G League Ignite
Zeng went undrafted in the 2022 NBA Draft, but since then, he has played for Beijing Shougang and has seen his stats improve. As Scotto said, Zeng is coming off his best season overseas. At one point in time, Zeng attended the NBPA Top 100 Camp in 2019, showing his potential. The Brooklyn Nets came into the 2025 NBA offseason with the goal of improving the roster for the 2025-26 season while taking chances on players that could be part of the franchise's future. Brooklyn has already made tweaks to the roster by adding veterans like Michael Porter Jr., but it seems that the team is also looking to take chances on young players as well. Per HoopsHype's Michael Scotto on Saturday, the Nets have agreed to a deal with forward Fanbo Zeng, who is currently considered one of the best prospects in the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA). Scotto notes in his report that Zeng is coming off his best season in the CBA as he averaged 14.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.6 blocks per game while shooting 53.0% from the field and 40.9% from three-point land. Zeng, 22, first made his name known within NBA Draft circles when he attended the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA) Top 100 Camp in 2019, a showcase intended to show some of the best high-school players in the country. In October of 2021, Jonathan Givony reported for ESPN that Zeng would sign with the NBA's G League Ignite program in anticipation of declaring for the 2022 NBA Draft. Following the conclusion of the 2021-22 season, Zeng played in 22 games for the Ignite, but averaged just 5.0 points and 2.3 rebounds per game while shooting 38.5% from the floor and 31.0% from deep. After going undrafted in the 2022 Draft, Zeng signed with the CBA's Beijing Shougang where he would spend the next three seasons and play some of his best basketball. With Zeng signing to the Nets' roster, that now puts Brooklyn's total of players at 20, including forward Ziaire Williams, center Day'Ron Sharpe, and forward Ricky Council IV, whose transactions are still pending as of this writing. During the offseason, teams are allowed to carry as many as 21 players before having to cut the roster down to 18 players broken into 15 players on standard NBA contracts and three players on Two-Way deals.
