Negri is sixth top state attracting foreign tourists
State tourism, arts and culture committee chairman Nicole Tan said the increase, based on accommodation data from Tourism Malaysia, ranked Negri Sembilan sixth out of 13 states and three federal territories.
'This has made the state one of the tourist hotspots in Malaysia,' she said at the state assembly sitting in Seremban.
'Most international visitors are from Singapore, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Brunei and India.'
She was replying to Mohamad Hanifah Abu Baker (PN-Labu) who asked for the number of international tourist arrivals in the state, Bernama reported.
Under the 'Pesona Daerah' initiative, Tan said Taman Tasik Seremban recorded 109,379 visitors including 2,901 international tourists, while Taman Malaysia received 13,607 visitors with 342 of them foreigners, and X-Park Sendayan drew 36,450 visitors including 8,450 from abroad.
'Port Dickson remains a key tourist destination in the state, with the Ornamental Fish Centre attracting 281,273 visitors including 4,882 foreign tourists.
'The Army Museum drew 200,061 visitors including 3,393 international tourists, while PD Ostrich Farm welcomed 43,800 visitors, with 8,984 from abroad, making it one of the district's popular attractions.'
Tan said Jempol district too recorded a positive trend in tourist arrivals with Bukit Taisho in Bahau attracting 37,500 climbers, of whom 2,500 were foreigners.
The overall number of tourist arrivals in the state reflected positive development, supported by attractions across ecotourism, cultural heritage and gastronomy segments, she added.

Budget 2026 to boost public sector reforms and governance in Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Budget 2026 will prioritise public sector reforms to strengthen governance and improve service delivery, according to the Ministry of Finance. The reforms include modernising public services and introducing new frameworks to enhance performance and ethical governance. 'These reforms aim to optimise public resources, minimise leakages, and ensure aid reaches those in need effectively,' the ministry stated. Budget 2026 builds on existing reforms under the Public Finance and Fiscal Responsibility Act and the National Anti-Corruption Strategy 2024-2028. Key bills like the Government Procurement Act and Ombudsman Act will enhance transparency and restore public trust in institutions. The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission will intensify enforcement, including cybercrime and digital asset recovery efforts. Digitalisation efforts will use AI and big data to improve tax compliance and revenue collection. GovTech initiatives like MyVisa 2.0 and MyJPJ will streamline public services and reduce bureaucracy. 'The government remains committed to expanding digital services despite infrastructure challenges,' the statement added. Budget 2026 will also introduce performance-based evaluations under the Government Service Efficiency Commitment Act 2025. The reforms aim to create an agile, digitally skilled public sector aligned with the MADANI Economy. 'Regulatory coordination and digitalisation will improve business processes and service delivery,' the ministry said. - Bernama

US tariff impact on Malaysia's growth: No recession but slower expansion
OSAKA: Malaysia's economic growth is expected to slow following the implementation of US tariffs. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the impact may not trigger a recession but will dampen growth. This aligns with Bank Negara Malaysia's revised 2025 GDP forecast of 4.0–4.8 per cent, down from 4.5–5.5 per cent. 'The impact may not lead to a recession, but there is an impact, where growth is achieved but at a lower rate,' he said. Tengku Zafrul spoke to Malaysian media at the Malaysia Pavilion during the World Expo Osaka 2025. He confirmed that Malaysia and the US have agreed on key terms of a reciprocal tariff agreement effective today. The deal covers six main chapters, with Malaysia's input already incorporated, pending final US confirmation. Sectors like electrical and electronics (E&E) and pharmaceuticals, currently enjoying zero tariffs, face concerns over global demand. 'A lot of frontloading happened. A lot of companies actually brought in or bought stocks and even finished goods,' he said. Some firms may absorb costs initially, but prolonged effects could force price hikes. 'As the stocks deplete or as the raw materials or the old supply chain knock-on effect comes in, I am not sure whether the companies can absorb the total cost,' he added. If suppliers pass costs to buyers, demand may weaken, affecting the broader economy. The US accounts for 15 per cent of Malaysia's trade, with exports hitting nearly RM200 billion in 2024. E&E makes up 60 per cent of these exports, highlighting the sector's vulnerability. Malaysia's tariff levels remain competitive, comparable to Taiwan's 20 per cent average. However, the US economy's size means any slowdown could have global repercussions. 'Some countries may be hit harder than others, depending on how open their economies are,' Tengku Zafrul noted. On Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's claims about tariff negotiations, Zafrul stressed the need for accurate information. 'We have already issued a statement previously. And yesterday, I also corrected the inaccurate facts,' he said. He suggested Dr Mahathir may have relied on incorrect sources. - Bernama

Visitors able to scan gold purity of jewellery at Kelantan PMR 2025
KOTA BHARU: Visitors to the Kelantan MADANI Rakyat Programme 2025 will be able to scan and determine the purity of gold in their jewellery using the scanning machine provided by the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM). SIRIM corporate communications division senior executive, Mohd Zul Arsham Mohamad said the machine, specially brought to the programme as Kelantanese women are known to collect jewellery, would allow visitors to confirm the actual purity and weight of the gold contained in their purchased items. 'Usually, this machine is only available in certain premises and not in jewellery shops as it is costly. So those who wish to verify the purity of gold can visit our booth throughout the three days of PMR. 'They can also take photos of the analysis results displayed on the machine as reference or for sale transparency,' he told Bernama today, adding that the results could also allow consumers to seek compensation from jewellery shops if there were discrepancies in terms of weight or purity. 'Currently, we find that gold sold in Kelantan and Terengganu were of higher purity compared to other states,' he added. Visitor Fatin Nabila Anuar, 38, said the service by SIRIM was very beneficial as it allowed women to choose honest shops. 'After knowing the gold content in the jewellery purchased, we can choose shops that are accurate and not fall victim to fraud,' she added. The three-day Kelantan PMR 2025 Kelantan that ends tomorrow is led by the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry (MOSTI) in partnership with the Implementation Coordination Unit of the Prime Minister's Department and supported by various ministries and government agencies. - Bernama
