PKR in Sarawak urged to regroup, invest in future leaders, says Rafizi
KUCHING, May 18 — PKR members in Sarawak have been urged to view the current political situation in the state as an opportunity to regroup and strengthen themselves for future challenges.
Incumbent PKR deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli said that, given Sarawakians' current preference for the existing state government, party members should use this period as an opportunity to 'invest' in cultivating a new generation of party leaders.
'This low point in our political cycle is a good time for us to invest in the party's future. Use this period to develop new talent, because the cycle will turn and our time will come,' he said at the Hidupkan Idealisme Reformasi Dalam Ujian Kuasa (HIRUK) Tour programme last night.
According to him, based on PKR's performance in past elections in Sarawak, the party has shown potential to win at least three parliamentary seats in the future.
'Miri is indeed our stronghold here in Sarawak, but there are also two or three other parliamentary constituencies with real potential,' he said, citing Kanowit, Selangau, and Puncak Borneo as among the promising seats.
In the 15th General Election (GE15), PKR successfully retained the Miri parliamentary seat for three consecutive terms since GE13 in 2013.
Rafizi said that PKR had previously won the Selangau and Puncak Borneo parliamentary seats, and narrowly lost the Kanowit seat in the GE15.
He added that whoever is elected in the party election on May 23 should give serious attention to the concerns raised by members in Sarawak, particularly in ensuring the party remains relevant in the state. — Bernama

GRS confident of continued alliance with Pakatan in Sabah polls, says PGRS veep
LABUAN, June 15 — Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is optimistic that its political alliance with Pakatan Harapan (PH) will continue into the Sabah state election. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) vice-president Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Mohd Noor, who is also PGRS president, is making strategic efforts to ensure the continuation of the coalition's collaboration with PH both during and after the polls. 'The current Sabah government is a combination of GRS and president is fine-tuning the details of ongoing discussions with PH, and he will make an official announcement in due course,' he told Bernama after officiating the Labuan PGRS annual conference here today. He said the Labuan division would play a critical support role during the state election campaign, especially by reaching out to Labuan-based Sabah voters. 'One of the key efforts is the opening of an operations room here in Labuan, specifically to coordinate support for PGRS candidates,' he said. The current five-year term of the 16th Sabah state assembly will expire automatically on Nov 11. In a recent statement, Hajiji reaffirmed that the cooperation between GRS and PH is based on shared governance goals and the commitment to political stability in Sabah. Ewon: Proposal submitted to teach four more Sabah ethnic languages in schools
PENAMPANG, June 15 — A proposal to expand the teaching of the Kadazandusun language subject in schools to include four other ethnic languages in Sabah has been submitted to the Federal Government for consideration, said Minister of Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Datuk Ewon Benedick. He said the four major ethnic languages proposed are the Tatana language in Kuala Penyu, Kadazan Tangaa in Penampang, Murut Timugon in Tenom and Dusun Lotud in Tuaran. The United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) president said he, along with a delegation from Sabah, had held discussions with Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek and the Ministry of Education delegation last year. 'Yang Berhormat Fadhlina subsequently agreed for a special committee under the Ministry of Education to be established to study this proposal. I will continue to follow up on all efforts to realise this initiative. 'Up to now, the Kadazandusun language subject in schools has been based solely on the Bunduliwan Dusun dialect,' he said in a statement after officiating the Odou do Kaamatan celebration at Kampung Mahandoi here today. Ewon said efforts to strengthen the ethnic language curriculum are ongoing initiatives involving various parties including the Kadazandusun Language Foundation (KLF), the Momogun National Congress (MNC), and the Sabah Ethnic Languages Association. He said his ministry is also supporting the effort through the allocation of special funding to four ethnic language associations for the development of modules, workbooks and textbooks. 'The teaching of these four Sabah ethnic languages can be implemented on a pilot basis in selected schools. For example, in Kuala Penyu, teaching the Tatana language would be more appropriate compared to using the Bunduliwan dialect,' he said. According to Ewon, Sabah could emulate the implementation of ethnic language education in government schools in Sarawak, which has piloted the teaching of the Iban and Bidayuh languages. 'Efforts in this direction are underway. A delegation from Sabah has also visited schools in Sarawak to observe first-hand the implementation of Bidayuh language teaching, in addition to the Iban language,' he said. — Bernama
