Gotion to begin building Morocco gigafactory 'within days'
Gotion High Tech signed an investment deal with the Moroccan government in June last year to set up the first gigafactory in Africa near Kenitra, northwestern Morocco, for a total investment $6.5 billion.
The company's investment, spurred by government incentives, is in line with Morocco's aim to expand and adapt its automotive sector.
Qalam told an industry conference in Rabat the groundwork for the factory had been completed and the first production was expected in the third quarter of 2026.
In a first phase, at a cost of $1.3 billion, the plant would have 20 gigawatt capacity, he said, adding the company had agreed with the Moroccan government to increase capacity to 40GW in a second phase. He did not give a timeline.
In addition to batteries, the plant will also produce cathodes and anodes, with a view to exporting the bulk to Europe, he said.
"We have already received orders from many European car manufacturers," he said.
Morocco's geographic location close to Europe and its existing automotive industry make it attractive to Chinese EV battery makers.
The country is is home to Stellantis (STLAM.MI), opens new tab and Renault (RENA.PA), opens new tab vehicle production plants, and reported a 6.3% increase in automotive sector exports to a record 157 billion dirhams ($17 bln) in 2024, according to official figures.

Second-hand Citroen C3 sales halted over airbag recall
The warning was extended after the French manufacturer's parent company Stellantis issued a 'stop-drive' notice to certain Citroen models in June. It comes after a woman sustained fatal injuries caused by an airbag in a 2014 Citroen C3 in Reims, France, last year. Stellantis UK announces an immediate stop-drive action for all Citroën C3 (second generation) manufactured between 2009 and 2019 equipped with Takata airbags. Owners of such vehicles should immediately stop driving their vehicle. — Citroën UK (@CitroenUK) June 20, 2025 Now, second-hand Citroens are also being included in the warning amid thousands still being listed for sale across the UK, according to This is Money. 'Buyers could have been driving away in potentially dangerous motors while also invalidating their insurance,' an article states. Since then, a team of motor trade lawyers have now issued a nationwide warning to used car dealers to suspend sales of vehicles in stock What Citroens are being recalled? The vehicles affected are second-generation Citroen C3s produced from 2009 to 2016 and first-generation DS3s manufactured from 2016 to 2019. As a result, around 82,000 C3 and DS3 models have been removed from the road across France. What is the recall on the Citroen C3 2025? The vehicles use Takata airbag systems, which could be faulty. However, Stellantis UK said that there were no reported incidents of faults in the UK, but it has decided to take action regardless. The car manufacturer in a recent statement said: 'Stellantis UK is mobilising its full network of suppliers, retailers and manufacturing plant to support this action to ensure the fastest, safest and most convenient solution for each customer. Got a 'do not drive order' from Citroen or DS car, we've added a few extra items and clarifications to our 'what are your rights' news story... — Martin Lewis (@MartinSLewis) July 10, 2025 'Stellantis remains fully committed to acting swiftly, transparently, and responsibly in addressing this issue.' Owners have been told to book their vehicles in to be rectified as early as possible and to not drive them in the meantime. However, a study by Which? revealed that hundreds of these cars were listed for sale on major used vehicle websites with no information that the manufacturer had issued a stop-drive notice. How do I check my Citroen recall? If you already own an affected Citroen, you should be contacted by letter, or you can check whether your car is affected by using the VIN check tool on Citroen's website. Recommended Reading: You will need the vehicle identification number (VIN). You can find this: at point 1 on your MOT certificate in part 4 (vehicle details) at point E in the vehicle's log book (V5C) A spokesperson from Stellantis said that they were 'working to maximise' the number of vehicles it can repair each day, with priority given to those with urgent needs.

Europe Inc swerves Trump trade war 'hurricane' but laments higher tariffs
LONDON, July 28 (Reuters) - European companies were left wondering on Monday whether to cheer a hard-won U.S. trade deal or lament a still sharp jump in tariffs versus those in place before President Donald Trump's second term. A day earlier, European leaders heralded a framework trade deal with the United States that would impose a 15% import tariff on most EU goods, averting a spiralling battle between two allies which account for almost a third of global trade. Although the deal is better than the 30% rate threatened by Trump and will bring clarity for European makers of cars, planes and chemicals, the 15% baseline tariff is well above initial hopes of a zero-for-zero agreement. It is also higher than the U.S. import tariff rate last year of around 2.5%. "Those who expect a hurricane are grateful for a storm," said Wolfgang Große Entrup, head of the German Chemical Industry Association VCI, calling for more talks to reduce tariffs that he said were "too high" for Europe's chemical industry. "Further escalation has been avoided. Nevertheless, the price is high for both sides. European exports are losing competitiveness. U.S. customers are paying the tariffs." The deal, which also includes $600 billion of EU investments in the United States and $750 billion of EU purchases of U.S. energy over Trump's second term, includes some exemptions, even if details are still to be ironed out. Carmakers Volkswagen ( opens new tab and Stellantis ( opens new tab, among others, will face the 15% tariff, down from 25% under the global levy imposed by Trump in April. Stellantis shares rose 3.5% and car parts maker Valeo ( opens new tab was up 4.7% in early trade. German pharma group Merck KGaA ( opens new tab gained 2.9%. Aircraft and aircraft parts will be exempt - good news for French planemaker Airbus ( opens new tab - as will certain chemicals, some generic drugs, semiconductor equipment, some farm products, natural resources and critical raw materials. Shares in the world's biggest chip maker ASML ( opens new tab rose more than 4%, among the biggest gainers on the pan-European STOXX 600 (.STOXX), opens new tab index. Dutch brewer Heineken ( opens new tab cheered the deal, with CEO Dolf van den Brink welcoming the certainty it brought. The world's No.2 brewer sends beer, especially its namesake lager, to the U.S. from Europe and Mexico, and has also suffered from the indirect effect on consumer confidence in important markets like Brazil. The rate on spirits that could impact firms such as Diageo (DGE.L), opens new tab, Pernod Ricard ( opens new tab and LVMH ( opens new tab, is still being negotiated though. "It seems that in coming days there could be negotiations for certain agricultural products, zero for zero, which is what the European and U.S. sectors have been calling for," said Jose Luis Benitez, director of the Spanish Wine Federation. Benitez added that a 15% rate could put Europe at a disadvantage versus other wine exporting regions subject to 10% tariffs. "If there are any exceptions, we hope that the (European) Commission understands that wine should be one of them." Lamberto Frescobaldi, the president of Italian wine body UIV, said on Sunday that 15% tariffs on wine would result in a loss of 317 million euros ($372.63 million) over the next 12 months, though the group was waiting to see the final deal text. Others said that the agreement- which followed on the heels of a similar one with Japan - helped bring greater clarity for company leaders, but still threatened to make European firms less competitive. "While this agreement puts an end to uncertainty, it poses a significant threat to the competitiveness of the French cosmetics industry," said Emmanuel Guichard, secretary general of French cosmetics association FEBEA, which counts L'Oreal ( opens new tab, LVMH ( opens new tab and Clarins among its members. VW's Skoda posts 12% profit rise in H1 as electric sales grow
PRAGUE, July 28 (Reuters) - Skoda Auto, a Volkswagen unit, increased the share of electric vehicles in its sales mix in the first half of the year and posted a nearly 12% rise in operating profit to 1.3 billion euros ($1.52 billion), it said on Monday. The Czech carmaker's revenue for the first six months rose nearly 12% year on year to 15.1 billion euros. Deliveries were up 14% to 509,400 vehicles in the period. Around 23% of those deliveries were either fully electric or plug-in hybrid models, up from 9.4% in the first half of last year, the company said. Chief Executive Klaus Zellmer said customers had placed more than 120,000 orders for Skoda's all-electric Enyaq and Elroq models by the end of June, highlighting progress in its electrification strategy. European automakers have booked multi-billion-euro losses and issued profit warnings as they struggle to handle competition from China, U.S. import tariffs, and EU regulations aimed at speeding up the EV transition. "Sales relative to the overall market performance, we are doing good," Zellmer told journalists in a video conference. While overall car sales have fallen in Europe this year, sales of electric vehicles - a priority segment for companies like Skoda Auto - have been rising. Zellmer said the company sees big potential with the new Epiq, an electric SUV priced at 25,000 euros that will target entry-level consumers. It plans to launch the Epiq in the first half of 2026. "We put a lot of hope or I would even say ... expectation on that car," he said. "Our current rate of electrified drive train sales ... has to go up." In the European market, Skoda delivered 409,100 vehicles to customers, an increase of nearly 11% that outperformed the overall market and was underpinned by the sales of 72,000 electric vehicles and 21,400 plug-in hybrids, the company said. Skoda also achieved record results in India where it delivered 33,000 vehicles, representing year-on-year growth of 108%, the company said. ($1 = 0.8527 euros)
