US charges Chinese hackers who targeted dissidents

Saudi Gazette06-03-2025

WASHINGTON — US prosecutors have charged 12 Chinese nationals for being part of an alleged hacking scheme, which sold data of US-based dissidents to the Chinese government.
The "state-sponsored" operation also targeted government agencies including the Treasury, according to the Justice Department (DOJ).
Hackers also allegedly targeted an American religious organization, and a newspaper in Hong Kong, the statement added.
China has not responded to these specific allegations, but has strongly denied other accusations in the past.
In December, the Treasury Department reported a "major" breach by Chinese-sponsored hackers, saying they were able to access employee workstations and some unclassified documents.
At that time, China denied any involvement, calling the accusation "baseless" and saying it "consistently opposes all forms of hacking".It is unclear when the latest DOJ charges were issued — but they were unsealed in a federal court in Manhattan on Wednesday.Among the individuals charged were two officers of China's Ministry of Public Security. The DOJ said that hackers, which appeared to represent a private company, i-Soon, charged Chinese agencies between $10,000 and $75,000 for each "exploited" email inbox. They allegedly "conducted computer intrusions" under the direction of Chinese ministries and on their own initiative, and were "paid handsomely for stolen data"."Today, we are exposing the Chinese government agents directing and fostering indiscriminate and reckless attacks against computers and networks worldwide," said Sue J Bai, who heads the DOJ's National Security Division."We will continue to fight to dismantle this ecosystem of cyber mercenaries and protect our national security," she added. No further details on the targeted US-based dissidents were provided. The religious organization hit by hackers was described as one which "previously sent missionaries to China and was openly critical of the PRC government". PRC is short for the People's Republic of China.A Hong Kong newspaper was also on the list. While it was not named, the statement said that it was "considered as being opposed to the PRC government".Besides US agencies, hackers were said to have targeted the foreign ministries of Taiwan, India, South Korea and Indonesia.Last October, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency said hacks targeting two major US presidential campaigns were carried out by "actors affiliated with the People's Republic of China".Earlier last year, seven Chinese nationals were charged with running a hacking operation that lasted at least 14 years and targeted foreign critics of China.Operations linked by Western governments to China have also targeted the UK's Electoral Commission, and the UK and New Zealand parliaments. — BBC

Baghdad Asks Iran Not to Strike US Targets in Iraq

An Iraqi senior security official said that Baghdad asked Iran to avoid targeting US interests in Iraq amid mounting tensions between Israel and Tehran, according to Al-Arabiya. 'The request was made. They promised us positive things,' the official said. Despite the fact that Baghdad is a close ally of Tehran, Iraq is also a strategic partner of the US and even has approximately 2,500 US troops on its soil as part of an anti-extremist coalition. Israeli Iranian Tensions On June 13, Israel launched a wave of airstrikes on Iran under the name of Operation Rising Lion. The military campaign targeted Iran's nuclear facilities and killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists. As a response, Iran launched a retaliatory wave of missiles against Israel and targeted Tel Aviv. US Denies Involvement On Friday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the United States was not involved in Israel's unilateral strikes on Iran, according to The New York Times. Rubio said Israel started the attacks and acted unilaterally based on its belief that the operation was necessary for self-defense. 'We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defense,' Rubio said. He also warned Iran late Thursday not to respond to Israeli strikes by targeting American bases in the region. Importantly, the US military maintains a large fleet of warplanes, naval vessels as well as thousands of troops stationed at its bases in the region, including in Qatar and Bahrain. 'Let me be clear: Iran should not target US interests or personnel,' Rubio added. Iran confirms nuclear contamination at Natanz site after Israeli strike

TEHRAN — A spokesperson for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (AEO) confirmed Friday that nuclear contamination was detected inside the Natanz nuclear facility following an Israeli missile strike targeting the site. Speaking to state television, AEO spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said Israel had launched multiple missiles at the Natanz complex in central Isfahan province in an effort to strike deep underground areas of the facility. 'Some contamination was detected inside the facility, but this contamination did not spread outside the facility,' Kamalvandi stated, adding that the contamination levels were not considered alarming. The Natanz site, Iran's largest uranium enrichment facility, has been at the center of Western concerns over Tehran's nuclear ambitions. In a separate statement, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi confirmed that external radiation levels remained stable. 'Radiation levels outside the Natanz facility remained unchanged. The type of radioactive contamination present inside the facility, mainly alpha particles, can be managed with appropriate protective measures,' Grossi said in a post on Israeli strike on Natanz was part of a broader military campaign launched Thursday, which targeted key nuclear and military sites across incident has heightened regional tensions and cast further doubt over stalled nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States. — Agencies

No Kings Rally: Americans to Hold Nationwide Protests on Trump's 79th Birthday

Millions of Americans are expected to join nationwide protests, dubbed 'No Kings,' on Saturday to demonstrate against the policies of the US President, Donald Trump. The protests coincide with a military parade in Washington DC to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the US Army and Trump's 79th birthday, reported CNN. No Kings Rally The No Kings movement expects millions to join its rallies in more than 1,500 cities across all 50 states on June 14, 2025, in what will likely be the largest single-day mobilization since Trump returned to office. In a statement, the movement said that No Kings rally is a 'mass, nationwide protest rejecting authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy.' It added that the protests are a 'direct response to Trump's $100 million military parade and birthday celebration' funded by American taxpayers. The organizers emphasize that their aim is to send Trump a clear message on his birthday: 'In America, we don't do kings.' Planned Protests The No Kings organizers have planned protests across various US cities. Philadelphia will see a flagship rally, with 60,000 to 80,000 protesters expected to attend. New York City also expects major demonstrations. Furthermore, over 200 protest events will take place in California, and organizers anticipate large crowds to attend in Phoenix, Houston, Atlanta, Charlotte and Chicago. Other groups are also planning additional marches across the country. However, the protest organizers will not hold rallies in Washington DC, in order to shift attention away from Trump's military parade. The Saturday spectacle will feature 7 million pounds of machines and weaponry parading through the country's capital on Trump's birthday. It is estimated to cost up to $45 million. No Tolerance with Violence Local and state authorities across US states have been preparing for the protests, according to CNN. Although No Kings organizers have stressed their demonstrations will be peaceful and non-violent, officials have warned protesters that they will not tolerate with violence as many US cities have been witnessing protest activities over the past days. In the light of this, the South Carolina Attorney-General, Alan Wilson, called the protesters 'radical anti-American groups,' warning that those who attack law enforcement or destroy property will face prosecution. Meanwhile, Florida's Brevard County Sheriff, Wayne Ivey, warned that anyone who violates the law will face severe consequences. 'If you throw a brick, a firebomb, or point a gun at one of our deputies, we will be notifying your family where to collect your remains because we will kill you,' he said. Trump's Reaction On Tuesday, the US President threatened to use heavy force against protesters if they demonstrated against the parade, according to ABC News. 'These are people who hate our country. We're going to celebrate big on Saturday. If any protesters want to come out, they will be met with very big force,' he told reporters at the Oval Office. On Wednesday, the White House press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, said that Trump 'supports peaceful protests.' During a White House event on Thursday, Trump said: 'I don't feel like a king. I have to go through hell to get things approved.' LA Riots About 200 Marines arrived in Los Angeles on Friday to guard a federal building in the city, after a week of protests against immigration crackdown that swept LA and spread to other US cities, reported the Associated Press (AP). The Marines started to replace National Guard members guarding the federal building west of downtown so they can join law enforcement officers to protect them during raids. Trump ordered the deployment of 2,000 National Guard troops and 700 Marines to LA, with additional 2,000 Guard members notified of deployment, to protect federal property and personnel. This move followed days of clashes between federal agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other law enforcement authorities on one side and demonstrators protesting against the Trump administration's crackdown on immigration. It also sparked a dispute between Trump and California Governor, Gavin Newsom, who decided to file a lawsuit against the Trump administration, calling the troop deployment a 'serious breach of state sovereignty' and a power grab by Trump. Hands Off Movement In late April 2025, thousands of Americans took to the streets across the US to protest against Trump's policies on several issues, including deportations, the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, and government layoffs. The protests were part of the '50501' demonstrations (50 protests, 50 states, one movement). They followed the 'Hands Off!' protests in early April, when tens of thousands of protesters swept the streets of US cities to voice opposition to Trump and Elon Musk. Short link : Post Views: 2
