Pushpa 2 stampede: Sritej's condition stabilising, though progress painfully slow, say doctors

After spending almost five months in intensive care, Sritej was discharged in April and transferred to a rehabilitation centre in Ramgopalpet for ongoing neurological rehabilitation. However, his recovery has been painfully slow, with doctors noting only around a 5% improvement in his condition.
Speaking to TOI, his father Mogadampalli Bhaskar said: "There has barely been any improvement in his health. My son still struggles to recognise us.
He mostly just stares, with very little emotion on his face. He is currently undergoing speech and swallowing therapy. We are holding on to hope for his recovery."
Sritej recently underwent knee surgery and was discharged from a private hospital in the city on Monday. Bhaskar said that, with the PoP cast on his knee, he is now receiving therapy at home.
"His condition is now stabilising. He's on the path to recovery, though progress is slow," said the doctors currently overseeing his treatment.
Prior to the knee surgery, doctors also performed an endoscopic gastrostomy procedure, which allowed for direct delivery of nutrition through a wide feeding tube placed in his stomach.
Sritej was brought to the emergency department in a semi-conscious state after sustaining injuries in the stampede outside Sandhya Theatre on Dec 4.
Following the incident, he remained unconscious for an extended period and suffered respiratory failure, along with severe neurological complications that required ventilator support for several weeks. He underwent multiple procedures in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and was gradually eased off sedation, mechanical ventilation, and tube feeding over several months.

NOTTO wants women prioritised in allocation of deceased donor organs
Representative AI image NEW DELHI: The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO) has suggested prioritising women in allocation of deceased donor organs. In a letter to the states/UTs, the apex authority for regulating organ donations and transplants in the country, has said a provision should be made to mark additional points for women recipients of donor organs, to address gender disparity. Studies have shown that while women make up a large percentage of donors, they receive fewer organs than men. "Women are equally vulnerable when it comes to end-stage organ failure due to illness, and it is important that organs are available for conducting a transplant - either through a living donor or deceased donor - for them," NOTTO director Dr Anil Kumar told TOI recently. NOTTO's letter sent on Aug 2, the eve of Organ Donation Day, called for additional measures like ensuring that deceased donors get a dignified funeral. Many states have mandated that the district magistrate concerned, or another senior official attend the funeral. The NOTTO directive suggests prioritising relatives of a deceased donor in allocation of organs should they require it. As per the annual report on organ donations in India in 2024-25, released on eve of Organ Donation Day, India carried out close to 19,000 organ transplants in 2024-25. Of these, 3,403 (17%) transplants were performed using organs retrieved from deceased donors or persons declared brain-dead.

Vax, sterilisation figures show UP keeping stray dog menace in check
1 2 Lucknow: In 2023-24 and 2024-25, animal birth control programme succeeded in sterilising and vaccinating 2,84,641 stray dogs against rabies. Moreover, the state established 17 permanent ABC centres, with two additional centres approved for Lucknow and Ghaziabad, on a comprehensive budget of Rs 34 crore. Additionally, the department issued 5,333 pet dog licences this year, promoting responsible pet ownership and community safety. Taking note of Supreme Court's latest directives issued to local bodies to manage dog bite cases and keep the local population safe, urban development department is taking proactive steps to enhance urban safety and animal welfare through its ABC and anti-rabies vaccination programmes, implemented across all 17 municipal corporations. Additionally, the department issued 5,333 pet dog licences this year, promoting responsible pet ownership and community safety. The ABC programme sterilised and vaccinated 1,25,893 dogs in 2023-24 and 1,19,197 in 2024-25. From Apr 1 to July 15, further progress was made. The pet licensing initiative ensured pet dogs were vaccinated and registered, reducing risk associated with unmonitored animals. Principal secretary of urban development department, Amrit Abhijat, highlighted the department's efforts, stating, "We are working diligently with urban local bodies to promote safer communities and humane animal management. The establishment of modern management centres and the issuance of 5,333 pet dog licences this year reflect our commitment to comprehensive urban solutions." To prevent dog bites, the department is raising public awareness, advising residents to avoid feeding stray dogs randomly at different locations, supervise children near animals, regulate their behaviour with night visitors and delivery persons visiting localities late at night, while also seeking immediate medical care in case of bites. Citizens are urged to report aggressive or unwell dogs to local authorities or to the dedicated helpline (1533) for prompt action. Moreover, the staff deputed in local bodies have been asked to deal promptly with complaints and grievances related to stray dogs and take action against those encouraging violent behaviour of dogs after making inquiries with locals and verifying the details through survey and investigation. ‘Left wheezing & coughing': 15 take ill after gas leak at junkyard
Ghaziabad: Several residents of Hindon Vihar fell ill on Wednesday morning after a suspected ammonia gas leak at a scrapyard in the area. At least fifteen people had to be rushed to hospital for treatment. Officials said that a forensic team reached the spot to check on the suspected leak and they are still ascertaining the nature of the toxic gas. According to Hazi Jamuludin, a resident, people in the neighbourhood began experiencing coughing and breathlessness around 8am. "A pungent smell engulfed about 300 metres of radius around a scrapyard owned by one Hazi Salim. A few people also fainted, and whatever means one had at that time ferried passengers to hospitals," said Jamuludin. "I myself ferried at least four of them to the hospital. I realised that there was something in the air and tried to get away from the house until I was picked up by a neighbour who took me to MMG Hospital. My oxygen level had dropped to 70." Doctors treating the affected patients said that it looks like they have all inhaled ammonia gas.
