2024-25 Thunder player grades: Alex Reese

2024-25 Thunder player grades: Alex Reese

The calendar has flipped to August, which means we've officially hit the low point of the NBA cycle. The next couple of months are the driest part of the year. Everybody has headed to vacation and awaits training camp to kick off the 2025-26 season.
The Oklahoma City Thunder continue to enjoy their NBA championship. They had a historic 68-14 regular-season campaign that eventually led to the franchise's first title with a 2025 NBA Finals Game 7 win. They'll enter next season as a favorite to be a rare repeat winner.
To reflect on their title run, Thunder Wire will conduct 2024-25 season grades for all 19 players who suited up for the squad at one point during the year. Nineteenth up is Alex Reese, who had a short stint on the Thunder:

Thoughts:
After bartending to keep his basketball dreams alive, Reese finally made the NBA. He was one of the Thunder's best storylines during training camp. The former G League player caught the attention of OKC. It was about time, as he went undrafted in 2021 and spent three years in other leagues.
The Thunder liked what they saw from Reese enough to add him to the standard. That happened in the wake of Isaiah Hartenstein's fractured hand in preseason, which would cost him the first month of the regular season. Even though his stay was short, he finally received a cup of coffee after working in the background to get to this point.
Reese appeared in just one game. He scored his first NBA points in it. Afterward, the Thunder ensured he received the game ball for the special occasion. It was those types of thoughtful moves that helped OKC's chemistry grow. It might be cheesy, but those types of intangibles matter for an NBA champion.
While the Thunder moved on from Reese, he landed elsewhere. He signed a two-way deal with the Philadelphia 76ers. Considering how depleted they were with injuries in a lost season, he received more opportunities there. He helped them land one of the league's worst records.
Moving Forward:
After an eventful first season in the NBA, Reese remains unsigned. If this is it for him at this level, he made out better than most. The 26-year-old spent a year on the Thunder and Sixers after he went undrafted in 2021. Most guys at his spot would've washed out years ago.
Reese has some decent size and can shoot the ball from the outside a little. But he's stuck in forward/center tweener purgatory. There's no real path for him to have an extensive NBA career, but at least he carved out a season with two teams and landed a two-way deal.
Reese had a solid story on his NBA journey. To work a different job to pay the bills is something that most fans can relate to. It made it easy to root for him to succeed. All things considered, he had a successful trip. The fact that he even made a roster is an accomplishment in itself.
The Thunder needed centers after they juggled through injuries. Reese provided some insurance that was never really needed in his short stay. Now, he should have a good shot to play in the G League with his NBA experience. It'll likely be up to him to see if that's something that interests him.
Final Grade: D

Isaiah Hartenstein has NBA 2K26 rating revealed

As the NBA is in its driest part of the calendar, NBA 2K has taken advantage of it. In anticipation of the NBA 2K26 release, the annual video game has slowly rolled out the top 100 rated players. It's a tradition that sparks conversations as fans across the league argue their guy should be higher. Fresh off an NBA championship, the Oklahoma City Thunder are prominently featured in the list. They have five players among the top 100. That shouldn't be a surprise. After all, they had one of the greatest seasons ever with a historic 68-14 regular-season record and a Larry O'Brien trophy. One of those top 100 players is Isaiah Hartenstein. He has an 82 overall rating, which ranks No. 84. Other Thunder players in the top 100 are Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams, Chet Holmgren and Lu Dort. In his first season with the Thunder, Hartenstein had a career season. He was a double-double machine with 11.2 points and 10.7 rebounds. He was mostly a starter and allowed OKC to play a double-big lineup alongside Holmgren. He was a productive starter who stabilized the center position.

Esports and sports are moving closer together as NFL, NBA and other leagues chase fans

Esports and sports are moving closer together as NFL, NBA and other leagues chase fans originally appeared on The Sporting News Professional sports face a growing challenge. Fans still tune in for the biggest games, but it can be hard to get them to stay for anything beyond that. With so many forms of digital entertainment competing for screen time, leagues are under pressure to find new ways to hold interest. Esports has filled the gap for millions of viewers. Competitive gaming now draws global audiences for everything from football simulations like Madden and EA FC to fantasy titles unrelated to sports like League of Legends and Counter-Strike. These broadcasts bring the action and commentary around the clock, giving fans steady engagement rather than just having to show up Sunday, no matter how fun that may be. Esports World Cup Traditional leagues recognize the inherent potential with this and they're rolling out their own esports competitions. The NBA2K League and the ePremier League are examples of sports organizations creating digital extensions of their brands. The production quality is similar to any televised game, with commentators, analysts, and live reactions helping fans stay involved and interested. The strategy is reportedly working, with viewers tuning in to watch elite players compete in digital arenas. Interest is said to be growing as well. What started as small experiments has developed into a major industry where action on the field is now complemented by a virtual counterpart. The future of that relationship will be discussed at the upcoming New Global Sport Conference coming up this weekend on August 23-25 in Saudi Arabia, where leaders from sports, gaming, and esports will meet. Casey Wasserman, who is the head of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and Olympic legend Michael Johnson will be among the attendees, along with Andrew Wilson of Electronic Arts and Ralf Reichert of the Esports World Cup Foun. Their focus will be on how both the real-life and on-line sides of this industry can grow together over the next three decades. Previous conferences have already led to collaborations, such as chess joining the Esports World Cup lineup. Momentum appears to be growing, so the possibility of more crossover deals is strong. Whether it is leagues continuing to back esports or broadcasts that blend both formats, digital competition is positioning itself as a greater part of the overall sports landscape. Read More!

HoopsHype ranks Houston's Kevin Durant at No. 2 among NBA small forwards

The Christmas Day showdown between the Rockets and Lakers will feature the NBA's top-two small forwards of the 2025-26 season, according to HoopsHype's latest rankings. In HoopsHype's rankings of expected production for the 2025-26 NBA season, the Houston Rockets have Fred VanVleet at No. 17 among point guards and Amen Thompson at No. 7 among shooting guards. They're even higher than that at small forward, and it's largely why the Rockets have emerged as a championship contender. Kevin Durant, who earned his 15th career All-Star honor last season, checks in at No. 2 on the small-forward rankings. HoopsHype's explanation: For how much things change in the NBA, sometimes, they also stay the same, and these next two players are a great example of that. Even with the NBA's always-shifting strategies based on analytics, somehow, someway, Kevin Durant and LeBron James remain the best small forwards in basketball, in our estimation. Last season, Durant was one of just six players to put up a 26/6/4 stat line, and did so while shooting an astronomical 43 percent from three. According to VORP and BPM, Durant was roughly a Top 30 player in the league. Can he still be the best player on a championship team? We're about to find out, as Durant joins a strong Houston team replete with players that have either championship experience like Fred VanVleet, or have loads of promise like Amen Thompson and Alperen Sengun. Joining a well-rounded team with toughness and skill on both ends of the floor, if Durant is still an All-NBA-level player and a ceiling raiser for a team, he should be able to prove it in 2025-26... as he won't be forced to endure as much of the two-way load as he did with the Phoenix Suns. The only small forward ranked ahead of Durant is James, and the two future Hall of Famers will face off on Christmas Day in a primetime showdown between the Rockets and Los Angeles Lakers. Houston (52-30) and Los Angeles (50-32) finished as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds in last season's Western Conference standings, and both teams are hopeful of more growth in 2025-26 amid the first full season of Luka Doncic with the Lakers and Durant's recent arrival in Houston.
