
Chinese astronauts return after six-month mission on Tiangong

Three Chinese astronauts safely returned to Earth on Wednesday after completing a six-month mission aboard the Tiangong space station, as Beijing continues its push toward becoming a leading space power.
Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong, and Wang Haoze of the Shenzhou-19 crew touched down at the Dongfeng landing site in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, according to state broadcaster CCTV and the Xinhua News Agency. Their landing, initially scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed by a day due to adverse weather conditions.
Footage showed the return capsule descending under a red-and-white striped parachute before landing in the Gobi Desert, kicking up a cloud of dust as recovery teams rushed in.
The crew launched last October and spent 180 days aboard Tiangong, China's independently built orbital space station. During their time in orbit, they conducted a range of scientific experiments, performed technical maintenance, and achieved a new national record for the longest spacewalk by Chinese astronauts.
Their return marks the official completion of the Shenzhou-19 mission and comes shortly after the successful launch of the Shenzhou-20 crew last Thursday.
The new team, comprising Commander Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui, and Wang Jie, lifted off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Centre and will also spend six months aboard the station.
Cai, 48, a veteran of the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022, led the crew. Song, 34, and Wang, 35, are both former air force pilots. Wang, notably, was China's only active female spaceflight engineer at the time of launch.
The mission highlights the continued expansion of China's ambitious space programme, which has received billions in government investment. Beijing aims to send astronauts to the Moon by 2030 and is laying the groundwork for a long-term presence on the lunar surface.
With the Tiangong station now fully operational, China is steadily positioning itself as a major spacefaring nation, independently of the US-led International Space Station, which is nearing the end of its operational life.

Following the DeepSeek, Beijing and Shanghai have experienced a collective sense of triumph akin to the JC10-PL15 Moment for most academics. The episode appears to have energised Chinese academia to engage in forward planning and explore options for enhanced and more effective cooperation with partner countries, particularly Pakistan. Why is this the case? Consistency is ensured by the Communist Party, which underpins China's entire political economy and the intellectual growth led by a dedicated leadership that ascends the political ladder through a rigorous accountability process. Only those with the utmost integrity and demonstrated commitment to the party and the people are successful in this process. What unites these individuals is an unwavering faith in the well-being of citizens and the belief that investment in human resources is essential for progress. Whether it is the iconic Great Wall in Beijing or Shanghai, Yiwu or Guangzhou, China's defence hi-tech capabilities, dozens of high-altitude glass bridges, or Shanghai's Global Finance Center, they all convey the same message: unwavering policy consistency, honesty and visionary leadership, coupled with absolute focus on the welfare and education of the people. These factors have transformed China and propelled it to a position where it is now asserting itself even against the United States. While President Trump's bullying tactics were met with resistance, China agreed to engage in diplomatic discussions but refused to yield. The recent grand summit in Kuala Lumpur, which involved China, ASEAN and the GCC, provided a glimpse of Beijing's unwavering commitment to peaceful engagement and win-win cooperation rather than coercive diplomacy. While President Biden's Build Back Better World initiative has seemingly lost momentum, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) continues to thrive and attract an increasing number of countries. Since Xi Jinping assumed the presidency in 2012, China has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in research and capacity building. Notably, the Chinese military has undergone a significant reduction in personnel, with nearly 300,000 personnel being eliminated. Additionally, the generals have been instructed to prioritise their professional duties and future challenges rather than engaging in commercial ventures. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) must maintain its focus on excellence and avoid any involvement in commercial activities. Both the PLA and the Communist Party have endured severe purges of high-ranking officials for corruption, inefficiency and betrayal of their responsibilities. The driving force behind China's current success lies in an ecosystem anchored in solid planning, facilitated knowledge and skill development, and the pursuit of excellence. This system operates on merit and celebrates knowledge and skills. Coincidentally, as I was concluding this article, a public service text message arrived on my mobile device, reminding us that May 30th is the 9th National Science and Technology Workers' Day and coincides with the 25th National Science and Technology Activity Week. "We extend our utmost respect to all science and technology workers. Let us harness innovation as our guiding principle and hard work as our propulsion, collectively constructing the vision of a robust nation through science and technology," said the message from the ministry. This inspiring message serves as a testament to the recognition of science and technology as the indispensable key to self-sufficiency and competitiveness, positioning China at a significant advantage over other nations. Over five-year period: NA body concerned at data of increase in sugarcane yields
ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security and Research on Tuesday raised serious concerns over the data of an increase in sugarcane yields from an average of 600 maunds to 700 maunds per acre over a five-year period. The standing committee which met with MNA Syed Hussain Tariq in the chair, expressed concerns about the data presented during the Public Sector Development Program (PSDP) schemes meeting, which claimed an increase in sugarcane yields from an average of 600 maunds to 700 maunds per acre over a five-year period under a project funded with billions of rupees by the ministry. The committee members have doubts over the reliability of this data, noting that it was sourced from sugar mills, which have a tendency to underreport production figures to evade taxes, raising doubts about the accuracy of the reported increase. The committee criticised the modest yield improvement despite heavy public sector investment, calling it an inadequate return on the nation's resources and time. During the meeting, University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zulfiqar Ali delivered a comprehensive briefing on the university's research initiatives and academic scope. He noted that UAF currently enrolls 33,556 students and offers 61 undergraduate, 112 postgraduate, and 225 diploma or short-course programmes. Of its 682 faculty members, 470 hold PhDs. Dr Ali outlined the university's strategic research focus, which includes genetics, seed and breed development, agronomic innovation, agro-technologies, and value addition. He highlighted progress in developing low-input, resource-efficient crops such as new durum wheat varieties. Chairman Tariq emphasised the importance of reducing crop cycles to conserve water and minimise pesticide use—an approach that also lowers the burden on farmers and promotes environmental sustainability. The briefing also showcased notable research progress, including the development of UAF-11, a high-yield Brassica variety, and Okra-3A as part of the vegetable breeding efforts. Further advancements in soybean, maize hybrids, mangoes, citrus fruits, and genetically modified sugarcane highlighted the university's dedication to improving crop yield, quality, and resilience. Dr Ali further informed the committee of the university's collaboration with the Asian Development Bank (ADB), focusing on DAP fertiliser production, import substitution, and precision agriculture. He said these efforts incorporate artificial intelligence, climate mitigation strategies, solar energy, and digital agriculture extension services. With 135 active collaborations — 84 international and 51 national—UAF also supports outreach efforts including Chinese language training and skill development for D-8 and OIC member countries. Under PSDP and ADB-funded projects, the university is establishing advanced laboratories for seed testing and certification to align with global export standards, he said. MNAs Rana Muhammad Hayat Khan, Waseem Qadir, Nadeem Abbas, Chaudhary Iftikhar Nazir, Musarrat Asif Khawaja, Zulfiqar Ali Behan, Usama Hamza, and Muhammad Ameer Sultan and senior officials of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) attended the meeting. Nvidia CEO praises Trump move to scrap some AI export curbs
TAIPEI: US export controls on artificial intelligence chips to China were 'a failure' as they have cost American companies billions of dollars in lost sales, Nvidia Chief Executive Jensen Huang said on Wednesday. Huang's comments were levelled at the Biden administration's AI diffusion rule that sought to curb exports of sophisticated AI chips by dividing the world into three tiers, with China blocked entirely. The Trump administration has said it is going to modify the rules. 'All in all, the export control was a failure,' Huang said adding, 'The fundamental assumptions that led to the AI diffusion rule in the beginning, in the first place, have been proven to be fundamentally flawed.' The US block on sales of advanced AI chips to China has forced companies there to buy semiconductors from Chinese designers such as Huawei, while also spurring China to invest aggressively to develop a supply chain that doesn't rely on manufacturers outside the country. The Nvidia chief executive said that despite the US controls, research continues, which requires vast sums of capital to acquire the necessary AI infrastructure. At a press conference at the annual Computex event in Taipei, Huang praised Trump's approach to AI and said by reversing the prior restrictions, the president demonstrated he understands US companies are not the only providers of such technology. 'President Trump realises it's exactly the wrong goal,' he said in reference to the prior rules. From the start of US President Joe Biden's administration, Nvidia's China market share has dropped to 50% from 95%, Huang said. Trump administration officials are weighing discarding the tiered approach to chip export curbs and replacing it with a global licensing regime with government-to-government agreements, which could give the US clout in trade talks. 'Intense' competition in China More than half the world's AI researchers are based in China and because of the US export controls on AI chips those experts have been forced to turn to local Chinese technology, Huang said. 'Our competition in China is really intense,' Huang said. 'They would love for us never to go back to China.' Huang estimated the entire AI market in China would be worth roughly $50 billion next year, which represented a significant opportunity for the company. At the Computex event, Nvidia announced several new technologies and businesses that will expand its $130.5 billion revenue. Nvidia plans to sell tech to speed AI chip communication The company said in April it would take $5.5 billion in charges after the Trump administration limited exports of its H20 artificial intelligence chip to China, a key market for one of its most popular chips. Earlier this week, Huang estimated that the H20-related revenue damage would amount to roughly $15 billion. But Nvidia is working on a version of its current-generation Blackwell AI chip that will include a less speedy form of memory to comply with restrictions on the typical advanced memory included on AI chips, according to two sources familiar with the matter. In 2022, the Biden administration effectively banned exports of advanced microchips and equipment to produce advanced chips by Chinese chipmakers, part of an effort to hobble China's semiconductor industry and in turn the military. After those controls were implemented, Nvidia began designing chips such as H20 that would come as close as possible to US limits. China on Monday urged the United States to 'immediately correct its wrongdoings' and stop 'discriminatory' measures following US guidance warning companies not to use advanced computer chips from China, including Huawei's Ascend AI chips. The US action seriously undermined consensus reached at the high-level bilateral trade talks in Geneva, a statement from China's commerce ministry said, vowing resolute measures if the US continues to 'substantially' harm China's interests.
