KARACHI : More than 200 inmates escaped from a jail in the southern Pakistani city of Karachi late yesterday when they overpowered prison guards after being allowed to leave their cells following a series of earthquakes, local officials and police said.
The jailbreak began just before midnight and continued into the early hours of today after hundreds of prisoners were allowed into the courtyard of the District Malir prison because of the tremors, Zia-ul-Hasan Lanjar, the provincial law minister, told reporters at the scene today.
Police said the prisoners snatched guns from prison staff and forced open the main gate after a shootout, evading paramilitary soldiers.
At least one prisoner was killed and three guards wounded, said provincial police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon.
'I heard the firing for quite some time and then some time later prisoners made their way out running in all directions,' Bukhsh, a private security guard at a residential complex opposite the jail who goes by a single name, told Reuters.
He added that some of the prisoners entered the apartment complex before being taken away by police.
Today, a Reuters reporter who visited the prison saw shattered glass and damaged electronic equipment.
A meeting room, for prisoners to see their families, had been ransacked.
Anxious family members had gathered outside.
The jailbreak was one of the largest ever in Pakistan, Lanjar said.
The prison, which houses 6,000 inmates, is in the Malir district of Karachi, Pakistan's biggest city.
Prisoners ran through the area throughout the night, some of them barefoot, with police giving chase, local TV footage showed.
About 80 of those who escaped had been caught, said Murad Ali Shah, the provincial chief minister.
The jail's superintendent, Arshad Shah, told reporters that there were 28 prison guards on duty at night, and that 'only a few of such a large number of prisoners escaped'.
He said the prison did not have security cameras.
Officials said the inmates, many of them heroin users, had been unnerved by the earthquakes.
'There was panic here because of earthquake tremors,' said Lanjar.
The provincial chief minister said it was a mistake for prison authorities to have allowed the prisoners to leave their cells.
He urged the inmates still at large to hand themselves in, or face a serious charge for breaking out.
'Petty crime charges will become a big case like terrorism,' Shah said.

Pakistan-China ties model of political trust, enduring cooperation, says Pakistani expert

"CPEC has improved connectivity, eased our electricity shortages, and created a large number of jobs and educational opportunities," said Syed, the chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute. by Jiang Chao, Ahmed Raza ISLAMABAD, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- The friendship between Pakistan and China is a model of political trust and enduring cooperation, said Mushahid Hussain Syed, former chairman of the Pakistani senate's defense committee, calling for joint efforts to build a closer Pakistan-China community with a shared future in the new era. Syed, who is also the chairman of the Pakistan-China Institute (PCI), said in a recent exclusive interview with Xinhua that the two countries should seize the opportunities brought about by global political and economic changes to deepen their strategic partnership further. Reflecting on the 74 years of diplomatic ties, Syed said that from the friendship forged by the older generation of leaders, to the construction of the Karakoram Highway, also known as the China-Pakistan Friendship Highway, and the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the two sides have established an unbreakable all-weather strategic cooperative partnership. Launched in 2013, CPEC, a flagship project of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, is a corridor linking Gwadar Port in Pakistan with Kashgar in Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which highlights energy, transport, and industrial cooperation in the first phase, while in the new phase it expands to fields of agriculture and livelihood, among others. Before the launch of CPEC, Pakistan faced security challenges and a lack of foreign investment, the former senator noted. "China was the first to invest in Pakistan, showing firm confidence in our future and enhancing our position on the global investment map," he said. "CPEC has improved connectivity, eased our electricity shortages, and created a large number of jobs and educational opportunities," said the PCI chairman. He pointed out that CPEC has in recent years expanded into agriculture, information technology, green energy and other sectors, boosting development in less-developed areas of Pakistan. "In the Thar Coal Block-II Coal Electricity Integration project, local women can drive dumper trucks to transport coal," Syed said. "The Sukkur-Multan section of the Peshawar-Karachi Motorway has created jobs for tens of thousands of locals, and improved cold chain facilities and road connectivity have benefited the fishing industry in Gwadar." According to him, CPEC is not just about steel and concrete. "It is a people-centered development project," he added. Syed suggested that the two countries deepen cooperation in industrial relocation, critical mineral development, information technology, agriculture, artificial intelligence (AI), and 5G. He also recommended that Pakistan should learn from China's experience in drip irrigation and multiple cropping. "Pakistan has an educated workforce, and China is a global leader in AI, robotics, cloud computing, and green energy," said the former senator. "The potential for cooperation is huge." Looking ahead, Syed said Pakistan should formulate strategies aligned with China's development priorities, particularly in electric vehicles, renewable energy, and addressing climate change. "We must combine technology with efforts to tackle climate challenges and promote green and sustainable development," he said. Speaking about the younger generation, the PCI chairman recalled his first visit to China more than 50 years ago as a student and as head of the Pakistan-China Youth Friendship Association. "That was the beginning of my bond with China," he said. "The China-Pakistan friendship is a unique relationship that has stood the test of time, built on solidarity and mutual trust," Syed said. "China's success story is worth learning from, and the youth of our two countries should work together to build a better future based on peace, development and prosperity."

Greed for money stands above sacrifice: Aaditya Thackeray takes jibe at BCCI for playing Pakistan in Asia Cup

New Delhi [India], August 15 (ANI): Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aaditya Thackeray launched a scathing jibe at the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), stating that the board's 'greed for money', which stems from competing in the fixture against Pakistan in next month's Asia Cup, 'stands above' the sacrifice of the nation's Armed Forces. The outrage over India facing their arch-rival in the tournament results from the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam, during which 26 tourists were killed on April 22 by Pakistan-sponsored terrorists in the name of religion. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the attack and dismantle the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and deeper inside Pakistan. In the aftermath of India's response, the strained relationship between the two neighbouring nations further slumped. Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a stirring speech on the 79th Independence Day on Friday and declared that if the 'enemy' dares to commit any misadventures, the Indian Armed Forces will give a befitting reply. While invoking PM Modi's remark about 'blood and water won't flow together, Thackeray took a direct dig at the BCCI for not taking a stand against playing against Pakistan, classifying India being bound to play against their arch-nemesis due to the tournament's rules as a 'joke'. 'It'll be a real shame if the @BCCI thinks it's above what the PM said from Red Fort today. After so many efforts of the Union Government and our country to tell the world that pak is behind the Pahalgham attacks, the greed for money of the BCCI stands above the sacrifice of the Armed Forces, the Nation and even the PM saying blood and water cannot flow together. With all the might that BCCI has in the ICC, it's a joke to say we are bound by the Asia Cup Rules,' Thackeray wrote on X. India and Pakistan are placed together in Group A alongside the UAE and Oman. Although India is the formal tournament host, a neutral venue will be provided for the opposing team for three years for competitions held in India or Pakistan, according to an agreement between the BCCI and the PCB. India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, while the much-debated game against Pakistan is scheduled on September 14. Throughout the Asia Cup, India could face Pakistan three times. Apart from the scheduled group stage fixture, India and Pakistan can compete in the Super 4 if they qualify from the group stage. If they manage to go past the Super 4 stage, they will square off for the third time in the tournament's final. Notably, the India Champions refused to play against the Pakistan Champions twice in the World Championship of Legends (WCL). After the first contest was called off, the India Champions were destined to take on the Pakistan Champions in the semi-finals. However, the team refused to participate in the contest and pulled out of the fixture. As a result, Pakistan qualified for the final but surrendered to defeat against South Africa. Earlier, India refused to cross the border and compete for the Champions Trophy in Pakistan. As a result, India played all of its fixtures on a neutral venue in Dubai and went on to lift the title with a commanding victory over New Zealand in the final. (ANI)

Pakistan committed to advancing CPEC for prosperity: senate's deputy chairman

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan's Senate Deputy Chairman Syedaal Khan Nasar has reaffirmed his country's resolve to advance the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), calling it "the key to the development and prosperity of the people of Pakistan, especially Balochistan." Speaking at an event titled "CPEC in My Eyes" in Islamabad, Nasar hailed China as a "brother" that has stood by Pakistan in every difficult time. "The journey from Quetta to Gwadar that once took 34 hours can now be completed in 12 hours via road, that is the progress CPEC has brought to ordinary people," he said, adding that all stakeholders in Pakistan are now "on one page" to drive growth through the corridor. Nasar underscored the need to further engage communities in agriculture, education, and trade under the CPEC so that "they will not only benefit but also help strengthen Pakistan-China cooperation." Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Jiang Zaidong said that with support of leaders of both countries, the corridor has been promoted and achieved fruitful results, helping Pakistan consolidate its development foundation and unleash its development potential. China and Pakistan will work together to build an upgraded version of the corridor and accelerate the building of a China-Pakistan community with a shared future, he added.
