Elephant-feeding By NGO Puts East-West Highway Users At Risk

IPOH, May 28 (Bernama) -- The act of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) placing heaps of fruit along the East-West Highway (JRTB) is drawing elephants to the roadside and increasing the risk of dangerous wildlife encounters for motorists.
Sungai Petani Response Team volunteer, Mohd Amir Faizal, said patrols by his team since May 11 have discovered several piles of fruit left at various locations along the JRTB.
'I was once contacted by a representative of an NGO who asked about placing fruits along the highway. I warned them against it, but judging from the photographic evidence we've received, it appears the warning was ignored,' he said.
'Volunteers have observed these fruit piles being placed at night in at least three locations – near Titi Gajah, the JRTB Construction Memorial, and close to the Jeli district in Kelantan,' he told Bernama.
Earlier, Mohd Amir had shared photos on Facebook showing mangoes and bananas placed along the roadside of the JRTB, which is known to be a natural habitat for wildlife such as elephants, bears, Malayan tigers, leopards, and tapirs.
The 123-kilometre highway, which links Gerik in Perak to Jeli in Kelantan, was built in 1970 and opened to traffic on July 1, 1982.
Mohd Amir warned that if this practice is not stopped, more people may follow suit, mistakenly believing it benefits wildlife.
'Wild animals are meant to forage on their own. Leaving food by the roadside is not only misguided, it's irresponsible and poses a serious danger to road users who rely on the JRTB for their daily commute,' he said.
Meanwhile, Perak Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) director Yusoff Shariff said there are currently no specific laws that allow for enforcement action against those who leave food for wildlife in such areas.

BOTA: The remains of five victims who perished in a two-vehicle crash at Km7, Jalan Jerantut-Maran, Pahang, yesterday were laid to rest in a single grave at the Kampung Selat Muslim Cemetery in Bota Kanan here early today. Klang boat tragedy: Victims may not have been wearing life jackets, say cops
KLANG: All victims involved in the capsized boat incident in the waters off Tanjung Harapan here Friday (June 6) were believed not to be wearing life jackets, says Asst Comm S. Vijaya Rao. The North Klang OCPD said initial investigations also revealed that the boat, which was being test-driven, was operated by its owner at the time. He said the absence of life jackets had made the search and rescue (SAR) operation for the remaining two missing victims among the six people on board more difficult. "Those who engage in activities at sea must wear life jackets, which are very useful during emergencies like this capsized boat incident, in addition to having swimming skills," he said at a press conference at the search site in Tanjung Harapan Saturday (June 7). ACP Vijaya said the location where the boat capsized had been identified, but strong currents may have swept the two missing victims away and caused them to drown. Meanwhile, he said police had recorded statements from three individuals, including one survivor. "The actual cause of the incident has yet to be determined, and the case is being investigated under Section 280 of the Penal Code," he said. In the incident at about 5pm, three individuals including a child died, one survived (Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17), while a married couple remains missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while those still missing have been identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. - Bernama
