Tiruvannamalai Corporation plans to build OHTs to provide uninterrupted water supply on Girivalam path
Officials of Tiruvannamalai Corporation said that existing civic amenities, mainly washrooms and water taps, remain inadequate due to the rising number of footfalls to the temple town, especially after the pandemic. 'Water supply especially to washrooms on Girivalam path remains the top priority due to a steady increase in pilgrim flow to the temple town. Water sources are also being identified for the purpose,' S. Selva Balaji, Commissioner, Tiruvannamalai Corporation, told The Hindu.
On an average, the town gets around three lakh visitors on Chitra Pournami days and 1.5 lakh tourists on weekends. During Karthigai Deepam festival last December (2024), around 40 lakh visitors attended it on Maha Deepam day alone.
Corporation officials said that temple and Girivalam path is covered by Adinamalai reserve forest (RF), which comprises around 900 hectares, and a home for spotted deer, wild boar, peacocks, wild cats and rabbits. Any open defecation on the route will not be unhygienic but also pose a threat to wild species in the forests.
On Tuesday, along with Corporation Commissioner Mr. Balaji, Collector K. Tharpagaraj inspected temple, Girivalam path and surrounding areas on providing additional civic amenities to pilgrims.
At present, the path has 57 washrooms including 35 of them were built by the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA). Most of the washrooms are in existence since 2002 when the path got its first batch of four toilets for pilgrims. Since then, mobile washrooms especially during festival seasons were hired on rental basis by the civic body.
Corporation officials said that an additional 223 new washrooms on the path will be built in the coming months under CSR initiative by public undertakings like BHEL, NLC and ONGC. In other words, each washroom, on an average, will have a space of 50 metres between each other.
The civic body plans to build at least two OHTs at a cost of Rs 30 crore for the purpose. Each tank will have a capacity of one lakh litres. Sathanur dam and Samuthiram lake will provide water for the new facility.
Currently, washrooms on the path are maintained with around one MLD (millions of liters per day) of water as against the actual need of four MLD. Borewells remain a key water source for it. The civic body gets around 22 MLD for its domestic needs and other purposes from these two water bodies every day. A small share of water from these water bodies will be diverted to new washrooms on the path, Corporation officials said.

Annual FASTag pass of ₹3,000 for private vehicles goes live from Aug 15
The annual highway toll pass of Rs 3,000 for private cars, jeeps, and vans will be rolled out from Friday. Ahead of the roll out, the government has opened the pre-booking window for FASTag-based annual passes that allow users to cross up to 200 highway toll booths on a single recharge of Rs 3,000 within a year. A dedicated link for activation of the annual pass is available on the Rajmarg Yatra app. The link would also be available on the official websites of National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). The annual pass will be applicable only for non-commercial private vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans. It will allow seamless travel across National Highways without the need for repeated recharging of FASTag cards for toll payments. In closed tolling highways such as Delhi-Mumbai Expressway - where toll collection occurs exclusively at exit points - a single trip includes both entry and exit points. On the other hand, on open tolling routes like Delhi-Chandigarh, each toll plaza crossing would constitute a separate trip. The pass can be recharged again once the 200-trip limit in a year is reached. According to the MoRTH, those who already have a FASTag on their vehicles will not need to purchase a new FASTag. The annual pass will be valid only at National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas. At fee plazas on Expressways, State Highways (SH) managed by state governments or local bodies, the FASTag will operate as a regular one, and applicable user fee charges may apply. FASTag - the electronic toll collection system - uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to automatically deduct toll charges from a prepaid account linked to the vehicle. Over 10.1 crore FASTags were issued till December 1, 2024, according to the road transport ministry's 2024 year-end review.

India's first underwater metro in Bengal: PM Modi's 'historic gift' for Kolkata; will inaugrate 3 metro projects before Durja Pooja
Kolkata is set for a major transport boost next week, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi scheduled to inaugurate three metro projects on 22 August. Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar on Thursday announced that PM Modi will be unveiling the Sealdah–Esplanade stretch of the Green Line, the Hemanta Mukhopadhyay (Ruby Crossing)–Beleghata stretch of the Orange Line, and the Noapara–Jai Hind (airport) stretch of the Yellow Line. Majumdar shared the update in a post on social media platform X, along with an invitation from Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to the ceremony. With the Sealdah–Esplanade link complete, the Green Line, touted as India's first underwater metro, will become fully operational, connecting Howrah Maidan to Salt Lake Sector 5. This will also mean a metro link to Kolkata airport for the first time. Calling it a 'historic gift' for West Bengal ahead of Durga Puja, Majumdar said the projects would benefit countless commuters. According to the invitation letter, the inauguration will take place at Jessore Road metro station on the Yellow Line in the city's northern suburbs. Currently, the Green Line operates in two separate sections, Howrah Maidan–Esplanade and Sealdah–Salt Lake Sector 5. Work on the Sealdah–Esplanade stretch had been delayed by a series of subsidence incidents in Bowbazar, in the city's central area. The long-awaited opening is expected to ease travel for thousands heading to the IT hub in Sector 5, as the Green Line connects with the Blue Line at Esplanade and links both Howrah and Sealdah railway stations. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Is Why Smart People Always Keep Baking Soda At Home Read More Undo During the event, PM Modi will also inaugurate a new subway at Howrah metro station. The Yellow Line's new extension will offer a direct metro link to the airport and connect with the Blue Line at Noapara, aiding air travellers and residents of the northern suburbs. The Orange Line, already in use between New Garia and Ruby Crossing, will now extend to Beleghata, providing better connectivity for those living in the eastern and southern suburbs. In his letter, Vaishnaw stressed the Centre's commitment to improving train services and infrastructure in West Bengal. He noted that projects worth Rs 83,765 crore are currently underway in the state, with a record Rs 13,955 crore allocated in this year's budget. Vaishnaw added that 101 railway stations in West Bengal are being redeveloped, while nine Vande Bharat and two Amrit Bharat trains are already in service. Metro Railway Kolkata, which operates the city's mass rapid transit network, is a zone of the Indian Railways.
