Woman pleads guilty in crash that killed Northmont senior, injured 5

May 9—A Huber Heights woman has pleaded guilty after she was accused of speeding and skidding into a pole, causing a crash that killed a Northmont High School senior and sent five others to the hospital.
Kelsey Renee Minor, 20, pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated vehicular homicide, according to a plea agreement filed Friday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.
That charge could bring a fine of up to $10,000 and up to three years in prison. Her driver's license will also be suspended for at least three years, but could be suspended for life, court documents said.
As part of the agreement, three counts of vehicular assault were dismissed.
The crash was reported around 1:35 a.m. April 30, 2023, when Minor was driving a 2005 Chevrolet Cobalt southeast on Salem Avenue with five others in the car.
According to a Dayton police crash report, Minor lost control of the car near Harvard Boulevard, which rotated counterclockwise and went off the right side of the road, crashing into an RTA pole.
Chris Gwynne, 19, of Englewood, was in the middle of the back seat, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Montgomery County Prosecutor's Office.
Minor and Jalen Waldon, 19, of Harrison Twp. suffered serious injuries, and three others aged 16-18 suffered minor injuries, the crash report said. All five were taken to Miami Valley Hospital.
Witness statements and other evidence determined that Minor was traveling more than 70 mph in the 35 mph zone when the car skidded.
The Dayton Daily News interviewed Gwynne in December 2022 about his post-high school choices.
He said he knew he wanted to be a trucker because his uncle and cousin work in the industry and make a good living.
"Most of your time is on the road and delivering that stuff. That's the only downside of it," Gwynne said. "I actually know that they make good money and that's why I like it."

Innocent Sacramento driver killed in police chase moved to U.S. to pursue American Dream, family says

SACRAMENTO – Family members of the innocent driver killed in a high-speed police chase in Sacramento have identified him as Nguyễn Huỳnh Hữu Đức, or Duc Nguyen. Nguyen, 30, immigrated to the U.S. from Vietnam four years ago for a better life and he was studying engineering. Family said he was working as a DoorDash driver when his car was hit during the police chase. MUOI DUC NGUYEN CBS13 obtained dash camera video showing the suspect vehicle speeding through a red light, colliding with Nguyen's car and then flying head-on into oncoming traffic. Sacramento police were chasing 33-year-old Daniel Cunningham, who was a wanted domestic violence suspect and parole violator. Police said that after he crashed, he got out of his car and tried to run away from the seven mangled cars before he was arrested. "They did have an initial right to pursue this man," said local attorney, unrelated to the case, Justin Ward. Ward said police pursuits take into account the safety of the public. "If there's a likelihood that the public will be injured or killed, they are supposed to stop pursuing that vehicle," Ward said. The suspect police were chasing could now face murder or manslaughter charges, according to Ward. CBS13 reviewed the Sacramento Police Department's pursuit protocol that says officers must consider if the pursuit is reasonable with regard to posted and safe speed limits and road, weather and traffic conditions. A spokesperson from the department could not tell CBS13 why their helicopter was not used and said they do not use drones to chase cars. The CHP is now investigating the police pursuit and deadly crash. CBS 3 spent hours with the mourning family on Sunday afternoon as over a dozen people gathered to pray for their loved one who was killed. The family brought Nguyen's favorite things to the intersection at Florin Road and called in monks to conduct a prayer to bring his soul home. People in the Pocket neighborhood stopped by to pay their respects, including the former Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg with his wife. As family and friends of Nguyen are beginning the painful process of mourning this sudden loss of a Sacramento man whose move here for the American dream turned deadly. MUOI DUC NGUYEN Family said Nguyen's wife was months away from joining him in America and they were preparing to start a family.

Wayne County deputy dies in crash on Lodge freeway

FOX 2 - An off-duty Wayne County Sheriff's Deputy died in a rollover over crash on the Lodge freeway early Saturday morning. Ryan Phillips was killed in the crash when his SUV ran off the roadway and up the embankment at Chicago on the northbound side of the freeway. The SUV rolled back onto the freeway after a striking a tree, according to Michigan State Police. Phillips was ejected from his vehicle at some point and was declared dead at the scene. When emergency vehicles arrived, the SUV was on fire and blocking more than one lane of traffic. State police said that Phillips was not using a seatbelt. "We are reminding drivers to wear their seatbelts," said MSP 1st Lt. Mike Shaw. "Not only will it keep you behind the wheel, it will keep you inside the vehicle if it rolls over. This crash pends further investigation and ME reports."
