Windows 11 Gets Apple's Siri-Like Voice Mode For Copilot On PCs: How It Works
Last Updated:
Microsoft is adding new Copilot features for Windows 11 users and bringing Hey Copilot is its latest attempt to get more people to upgrade.
Windows users are getting a new voice mode which activates by saying 'Hey, Copilot!", according to the latest blog posted by Microsoft. The tech giant is trialing this new voice trigger on Windows as part of its recent push towards adding new AI features to deliver an enhanced experience for artificial intelligence users.
The company says the opt-in feature gives people the chance to use the Copilot without needing to use their hands. To avail of the command-based update, users must unblock their Windows PC.
Built along the lines of Apple's Siri for iOS, Gemini and Bixby, users can trigger the Copilot on Windows by giving the 'Hey, Copilot!" voice command.
How It Works
Users will see a Copilot Voice Floating UI at the bottom of the screen or a voice greeting/response from the AI assistant.
The company has clarified that the Copilot won't be a default feature in new Windows PC, and you will need to open the Copilot app, tap on your avatar from the bottom left corner and click on Settings. Windows users will find 'Voice Mode'. Now, just turn on the toggle named 'Listen for Hey, Copilot to start a conversation."
The tech giant also mentioned that the Copilot Voice interface will only appear when users are in a conversation with the AI chatbot and they can end the dialogue by simply tapping on the 'X' button. Copilot conversation can also end automatically if a user doesn't interact for more than a few seconds.
While Copilot performs the wake word detection locally, Microsoft says the feature will try to use the internet because it requires an active connection for its responses. It must also be noted that the 'Hey, Copilot!" command is only available if a user has set English as their display language.

Apple loses bid to pause app store reform order in Epic Games case
Apple on Wednesday failed to persuade a U.S. appeals court to pause key parts of a federal judge's order requiring the iPhone maker to immediately open its lucrative App Store to more competition. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected Apple's request to put the provisions on hold as the tech company appeals the judge's order, which came in a long-running antitrust lawsuit brought by 'Fortnite' maker Epic Games. U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in April found Apple in contempt of an earlier injunction order she issued in the Epic Games case. Apple in a statement said it was 'disappointed with the decision not to stay the district court's order, and we'll continue to argue our case during the appeals process.' The judge on April 30 ordered Apple to end several practices that she said were designed to circumvent the injunction, including a new 27% fee Apple imposed on app developers when its customers complete an app purchase outside the App Store. The court also prohibited Apple from restricting where developers place links to make purchases outside of an app. Epic Games founder and chief executive Tim Sweeney said in a post on X after the appeals court ruling that the 'long national nightmare of the Apple tax is ended.' In its emergency appeal, Apple said the ruling blocked the company from 'exercising control over core aspects of its business operations' and forced it to give free access to its services. Epic Games countered that Apple was trying to continue evading competition and collecting fees that the judge had barred. Apple has faced a 'surge of genuine competition' since Gonzalez Rogers issued her April injunction, as developers updated apps with 'better payment methods, better deals, and better consumer choice,' Epic said. Epic Games sued Apple in 2020 to loosen its control over transactions in applications that use its iOS operating system and how apps are distributed to consumers. Apple mostly won the case, but Gonzalez Rogers in 2021 said Apple must allow developers to more easily steer consumers to potentially cheaper non-Apple payment options. Apple defied that court order to maintain a revenue stream worth billions of dollars, Gonzalez Rogers wrote in April. She also said Apple had misled the court about its efforts to comply with her injunction and referred the company and one of its executives to federal prosecutors for a possible criminal contempt investigation.

Apple loses bid to pause court order letting apps bypass App Store fees
By Josh Sisco and Mark Gurman Apple Inc. lost its request to pause a court order requiring it to let App Store developers steer users to the web to purchase in-app items without paying a commission. The ruling Wednesday by a San Francisco-based federal appeals court is the latest setback for the iPhone maker in a long-running fight with Fortnite maker Epic Games Inc. over the dominance of the smartphone software market with its App Store. Apple sought the pause while it appeals a judge's April ruling that it must comply with a 2021 injunction she issued after finding the company engaged in anticompetitive conduct in violation of California law. An Apple spokesperson said the company is disappointed with the ruling. 'We'll continue to argue our case during the appeals process,' the spokesperson said. 'As we've said before, we strongly disagree with the district court's opinion. Our goal is to ensure the App Store remains an incredible opportunity for developers and a safe and trusted experience for our users.' Epic's chief executive officer, Tim Sweeney, hailed the ruling in a social media post on X. Apple's stay is denied by the 9th Circuit Court. The long national nightmare of the Apple tax is ended. May next week's WWDC be the Apple-led celebration of freedom that developers and users have long deserved. — Tim Sweeney (@TimSweeneyEpic) June 4, 2025 The April ruling takes a bite out of the lucrative revenue the App Store generates for Apple. It blocks the company from charging commissions on transactions linked outside the App Store and from controlling the language and app design that developers use to steer their customers to their own websites to make payments. Apple argued to the appeals court that the ruling by US District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers in Oakland, California, is causing the company 'grave irreparable harm.' The iPhone maker also contends Gonzalez Rogers erred in concluding it didn't comply with her 2021 injunction. Following a trial in 2021, Gonzalez Rogers largely sided with Apple, saying that its App Store policies didn't violate federal antitrust law. However, she ordered the company to let developers bypass its in-app payment tool to avoid a commission of up to 30 per cent. The ruling was ultimately upheld by the US Supreme Court last year when it declined to hear appeals in the case. In response to the 2021 injunction, Apple allowed developers to point users to the web to complete transactions for in-app purchases, but required developers to pay the company a 27 per cent cut of whatever revenue they generated. Epic and other developers complained about both the new commission as well as a host of restrictions Apple placed on their ability to link out of the App Store, including the design and placement of buttons. Epic accused Apple of flouting the 2021 injunction, leading to the April ruling. After several weeks of hearings last year and this year, Gonzalez Rogers concluded that Apple 'willfully' violated her injunction four years ago. She also referred the company to federal prosecutors for a possible criminal probe of contempt of court.
