Windows 11 Gets Apple's Siri-Like Voice Mode For Copilot On PCs: How It Works
Last Updated: Microsoft is adding new Copilot features for Windows 11 users and bringing Hey Copilot is its latest attempt to get more people to upgrade. Windows users are getting a new voice mode which activates by saying 'Hey, Copilot!", according to the latest blog posted by Microsoft. The tech giant is trialing this new voice trigger on Windows as part of its recent push towards adding new AI features to deliver an enhanced experience for artificial intelligence users. The company says the opt-in feature gives people the chance to use the Copilot without needing to use their hands. To avail of the command-based update, users must unblock their Windows PC. Built along the lines of Apple's Siri for iOS, Gemini and Bixby, users can trigger the Copilot on Windows by giving the 'Hey, Copilot!" voice command. How It Works Users will see a Copilot Voice Floating UI at the bottom of the screen or a voice greeting/response from the AI assistant. The company has clarified that the Copilot won't be a default feature in new Windows PC, and you will need to open the Copilot app, tap on your avatar from the bottom left corner and click on Settings. Windows users will find 'Voice Mode'. Now, just turn on the toggle named 'Listen for Hey, Copilot to start a conversation." The tech giant also mentioned that the Copilot Voice interface will only appear when users are in a conversation with the AI chatbot and they can end the dialogue by simply tapping on the 'X' button. Copilot conversation can also end automatically if a user doesn't interact for more than a few seconds. While Copilot performs the wake word detection locally, Microsoft says the feature will try to use the internet because it requires an active connection for its responses. It must also be noted that the 'Hey, Copilot!" command is only available if a user has set English as their display language. First Published: May 19, 2025, 09:10 IST

Soon you will be able to shout Hey Copilot to your Windows laptop
Microsoft is testing a new hands-free voice activation feature for Copilot on Windows 11. The feature will allow users to simply say 'Hey Copilot' to interact with the AI assistant. The Copilot wake word feature is currently in beta testing and is being rolled out to select users who are part of Microsoft's Windows Insider its official blog post, Microsoft reveals that the upcoming update will allow users to start talking to Copilot in a manner similar to how other voice assistants such as Siri, Google Assistant, or Alexa work. While voice commands are not new in the tech space, this is the first time Microsoft's AI Copilot is getting a wake word. Previously, Microsoft offered a similar feature for its now-discontinued virtual assistant, to use the "Hey Copilot" featureThe Copilot wake word feature is currently under testing. Once available, to try out the new voice feature, users will first need to opt in and manually enable the 'Hey Copilot' wake word in the Copilot app's settings. Once activated, your PC will listen for the wake phrase as long as it is unlocked. Upon detecting the command, a floating microphone UI will appear at the bottom of the screen, along with a chime to indicate Copilot is actively listening. Once active, users can ask anything from 'Hey Copilot, what's the weather like in Palm Springs this weekend?' to more complex queries or productivity tasks. The interaction will end automatically after a few seconds of inactivity or when the user taps the 'X' on the floating UI, accompanied by an audible wake word functionality will even work offline, though an internet connection will still be required for Copilot to process and respond to queries, as the core AI runs in the says that its upcoming hands-free interaction is built around an on-device wake word detection system that processes voice input locally. The company emphasises that the feature will consider user privacy, stating that the assistant uses a 10-second audio buffer that neither stores voice data locally nor uploads it to the Copilot feature availabilityThe voice-enabled version of Copilot is available to testers with app version 1.25051.10.0 or higher, and whose system language is set to English. Microsoft says the rollout is gradual, so not all eligible users will see the update immediately. The official rollout is expected in the coming weeks or months, as the company completes beta trials for now, users eager to test this feature can join the Windows Insider Programme.

Microsoft tests 'Hey Copilot' voice command to wake AI on Windows 11
Microsoft is testing a feature akin to Siri, Google, and Alexa. According to a Microsoft blog, the company is testing a feature for its native artificial intelligence app, named Copilot, that would trigger a conversation upon saying 'Hey Copilot!' As per the report, the US technology giant has rolled out access to this feature to Windows Insiders. Similar commands like 'Hey Google!', 'Hey Siri!', and 'Alexa!' have been in the market for a long time and it seems like Microsoft is planning to join the league. Notably, Microsoft has provided this feature to consumers long back with 'Hey Cortana!' when Cortana was its default virtual assistant before it was pulled down from across its ecosystem in 2014. Hey Copilot: How does the feature work According to a frequently asked question (FAQ) shared in Microsoft's blog, the system relies on an on-device wake word detector with a 10-second audio buffer. It doesn't upload audio to the cloud or store it locally. According to Microsoft, the wake word can be detected even without an internet connection but, in order to use Copilot Voice functions, an online connection is required since the feature depends on cloud-based processing.
