Amsterdam is famed for its beautiful canals so a boat tour is undoubtedly the best way to see the city.

They are really easy to steer and, with more time on board, you can hop on and off as you please to take advantage of the many canalside pubs.
HIDDEN GEM
The artsy, bohemian neighbourhood of De Pijp is much loved by locals and not very well known among tourists, but it is heaving with quirky cafes, artisan shops and tall buildings where colourful flower pots light up the brick balconies.
BEST VIEW
The 100-metre-tall A'DAM Lookout may offer the best views of the city from above, with a 360-degree sky deck and giant rooftop swing, but do expect queues because it's a popular tourist spot.
For something a little quieter that will make for an excellent photo background, head to one of the smaller canal bridges, a little farther out of the city centre.

There are a few pretty bridges behind the Tulip Museum - such as Hilletjesbrug, where you can pose for pictures in front of flower-covered railings with a tree-lined canal and bobbing boats as your backdrop.
RATED RESTAURANT
Cafe de Parel was once a traditional Dutch "brown bar" but now it's an in-demand restaurant with affordable tasting menus (three courses for €52 (£43.79)).

These change regularly but you can expect to tuck in to sophisticated sharing dishes such as calamari with egg yolk and dashi, or pointed cabbage with brown butter and chamomile jus.

Vesper, a teeny bar close to Centraal Station, serves mean cocktails, created by award-winning mixologists.

For a proper pint, Bar Brother, close to the Chassebuurt district, has a welcoming atmosphere and serves its ales alongside typically British bar snacks such as Scotch eggs and arancini.
HOTEL PICK
CitizenM Amstel Amsterdam Hotel is well located, around a 30-minute walk from the main train station and with modern, affordable rooms from €100 (£84.22) per night.
For something a little fancier, The Pulitzer hotel is set within 25 restored 17th and 18th-century houses along the canal in the Jordaan district, close to the Anne Frank museum.
It's also home to a top-notch restaurant and bar. Rooms cost from €295 (£248.44) per night.

Ikea to step up presence in Inverness with new lockers in supermarket car park
Welcome back to Planning Ahead – which brings you a round-up of the latest proposals across Inverness. Following Ikea's successful launch of a click and collect service last year, the Swedish furniture giant submitted plans to install 40 pick-up lockers at Tesco Inshes car park. They have now been given the green light. Meanwhile, plans have been submitted to replace the front sign of the High Street's WH Smith with a TG Jones one. It comes just over two months after WH Smith sold its nearly 500 High Street stores to Modella Capital. Plans have also been submitted to build a new active travel path for cyclists and pedestrians north of Inverness. In the last planning ahead, we revealed that an Inverness B&B had submitted plans to transform a garage into short-term let accommodation. Plans to do the exact thing at a property in Dalneigh have now been submitted. Let's get to it this week! Last March, we published that WH Smith had agreed to sell all 500 of its UK High Street shops, which employ around 5,000 people, in a £76 million deal. The 233-year-old British retailer reached a deal to sell the chain to Modella Capital, which will see the stores rebranded as TG Jones. The first steps to convert the WH Smith store on the High Street into a TG Jones shop have now been taken. Plans have been submitted to replace the front sign of the premises with two large blue signs reading TG Jones. The planning application reads that the additions will 'keep with the character of the area and will have very little impact on the surrounding properties.' TG Jones has been chosen by the new owners to evoke a sense of the same long family history that WH Smith has. The offering of the store is expected to remain similar. A new active travel path could be built north of Inverness. The Cawdor & West Nairnshire Community has submitted plans to form a path about half a mile long for cyclists and pedestrians. It would be connected to an existing pathway from Clephanton to Croy that is parallel to the B9091. The proposed new route would initially run along a boundary gap between a conifer woodland and roadside broadleaf strip. It would then go along the edge of a field and the verge of the B9091 by Heathpark. Amid the holiday let boom, the owners of a property on Columba Road have submitted plans to convert a garage into 'habitable accommodation for short term lets'. According to the application, the new short-term let accommodation will be managed by the homeowner. The proposed accommodation would include one bedroom, a bathroom and a kitchen/living room area. Ikea lovers are in luck as plans to install dozens of pick-up lockers at a supermarket car park have now been approved. The Swedish retailer has been operating a mobile pick-up point at Tesco Inshes over recent months. The company explained that this has proved 'successful', with the new proposals aiming to provide a 'permanent, secure and attractive service for customers.' The company informed that the pick-up point will no longer be in operation once the lockers are installed. The new facility will be located at the northern end of the car park and will feature a block of 40 storage lockers. It will lead to the loss of around eight to 10 parking spaces at the site. The lockers will be blue and yellow, the colours associated with the IKEA brand, to help customers identify the location. They will be of different sizes and will accommodate a range of orders, from home accessories and homewares to furniture. A safe collection area protected by bollards and integrated LED lighting will be set up in front of the lockers. Customers will be able to collect their order after receiving a six-digit code. Permission has also been granted to install two new Ikea signs above the lockers, which will be internally illuminated at night. A spokesperson for Ikea UK said: 'We're always exploring ways to provide our customers in and around the Inverness area with convenient and cost-effective delivery solutions such as our pick-up lockers. 'As a convenient and accessible way for shoppers to pick up their purchases, our lockers are a popular choice among customers. 'We look forward to sharing more details about our plans and what this means for the local community in due course. 'In the meantime, Inverness residents can shop online, with the option of using our Ikea collection point at Tesco Extra Inverness.'

The band were first formed in the 70s before shooting to fame in the 1980s being led by lead singer Richard Butler and his brother and bassist Tim. They will kick off their tour on June 19 and 20 with gigs in Belfast and Dublin. The Love My Way rockers will then embark on the North American leg of the tour, which will end in Brooklyn, New York, on October 19. Later that month they will start the UK shows with an appearance at the Wulfrun Hall in Wolverhampton on October 22. Fans in Glasgow will then get the chance to see the stars at the legendary Barrowland Ballroom on October 24. The band are being supported by German punk star Anja Huwe for the only Scottish show on the tour. After Glasgow they will perform across the rest of the UK. The tour will then have dates in stadiums across Europe. "Kicking off in Wolverhampton on October 22, the band will spend the end of October on the road making stops in Glasgow, Manchester, Leeds and more. "The tour will culminate with a show at the stunning Palladium in London. "The band will be joined on tour by special guest and post-punk icon Anja Huwe, marking her first UK shows in over 15 years." Fans have been given the chance to sign up for presale tickets before they go on sale on Friday at 10am.

Boy, 4, sucked into hotel swimming pool in Majorca holiday horror

A young British holidaymaker sparked a rescue mission when he was sucked into a hole in a swimming pool in Majorca. The four-year-old's arm was sucked into the cleaning system of the swimming pool at the hotel in question, with guests looking on in horror as the child suddenly became stuck. He had put his arm into the pool's suction hole, which was not covered. The vacuum effect from the hole trapped him up to his elbow, forcing staff at the Hotel Zafiro in Can Picafort, a resort in the north of the island, to call in the emergency services. The Mirror reports paramedics arrived first at the scene but were unable to free the boy, forcing firefighters to drain the pool and then use a pneumatic drill to reach a pipe leading to the hole. The boy was given a helmet and ear protectors as they drilled down, before they eventually cut it off at the source around 30 minutes later and freed the boy. Photographs from the scene show the boy in an orange cap waiting patiently as emergency workers attempt to get him out. Police and members of the Spanish Guardia Civil were also at the scene. The boy was taken to a local clinic but thankfully did not sustain any serious injuries. Euro Weekly reported a makeshift solution to the issue had seen them reinsert a screw to cover the hole, though this frequently came loose. An investigation into potential negligence by hotel management is now underway, local reports said. It comes after hundreds of British holidaymakers were left stranded abroad after they were hit by a series of flight cancellations due to severe weather. Some of those affected were families set to fly back to the UK from Majorca this week after jetting off to Spain for the half-term holidays - but have been hampered by delays caused by air traffic control restrictions. Airlines said the issue is out of their control. An easyJet spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, due to the impact of widespread thunderstorms across Northern Europe yesterday, some flights were unable to operate as planned. "We did all we could to minimise the impact of the weather disruption on our customers, providing options to rebook or a refund their flights as well as providing hotel accommodation and meals for these who required them. "The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is easyJet's highest priority and while this was outside of our control, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused."
